The Lexicon Podcast presents the extraordinary story of Professor William Dawson Bellhouse, crystalmancer and galvanic physician of Liverpool and Leeds.
A few years ago, US academic Daniel Harms made a
startling discovery in the 'magic box' of New York Public Library, the Grimoire of a certain WD Bellhouse. Hidden for some 170 years, Bellhouse reached back from beyond the grave, demanding that his magick be restored into the view of the 21st century public.
Five minutes walk from my work is Pembroke Place is now the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, in the heart of a three hundred year old district of medical research and treatment. Long before LSTM built their new research centre here, Bellhouse set up practice on this site. He would 'treat' wealthy patients to electric shock baths and gaze into their future.
Outed as a charlatan and conman by the Liverpool Mercury's Hugh Shimmin, this was not before he wrote his time, which was based largely upon Latin texts, a language he didn't even understand. Bellhouse was quite the spark though, electrifying his surgery door so that unwelcome visitors would receive 240 volts if they tried to enter.
I caught up with Dan, who edited and introduced the new publication ofBellhouse's Grimoire, available at https://troybooks.co.uk
Bellhouse has already been written into my next novel surrounding his antics with the poor of Liverpool who lived in the court housing adjacent to his practice.
