Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., chair of the House Oversight Committee, has requested that attorney Alan Dershowitz testify about his relationship with convicted sex offender and former client Jeffrey Epstein.
"Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, documents obtained by the Committee, and your former role as Mr. Epstein's attorney, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation," Comer wrote in a letter.
Comer wants Dershowitz to sit for an in-person videotaped interview in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, July 9.
The committee has recently interviewed Lesley Groff, a former assistant to the New York financier, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who was an acquaintance of Epstein's.
"Based on the testimony from Ms. Groff, as well as a meeting that I had afterwards with several of the Epstein survivors, I am going to ask Alan Dershowitz to come in," Comer said.
"We're going to give him an opportunity to come in and answer several questions that arose ... based on Ms. Groff's testimony and some things that some of the Epstein survivors said," Comer added.
Dershowitz said on NewsNation that he was willing to sit for an interview that is, "videotaped, under oath and open to the public," calling for "complete transparency."
"I'm very proud of my role in representing Epstein," he said. "I have nothing to hide. I hope they have videos of Epstein's rooms. I'm willing to testify truthfully about Les Wexner. All of it."
Dershowitz was part of Epstein's legal team in 2007, which negotiated his non-prosecution agreement in Florida, and later represented the financier as civil suits expanded against him.
Dershowitz was no longer serving as legal counsel to Epstein in July 2019, when he was facing charges of sex trafficking of minors.
One month later, Epstein died in a New York correctional institution. His death was ruled a suicide.
Dershowitz has said he was never on Epstein's private jet with young women.
