Hi All,
We have received a request from André Wade, director of Silver State Equality, for folks to submit opinion votes supporting SB171, the gender affirming shield law to protect healthcare providers in Nevada from disciplinary actions for providing medically necessary gender-affirming health care services.
Currently the public response is abysmal - with 59% of respondents opposing the shield law. If we all submit opinions in favor of the law and share with our networks, we can turn the tide! To submit a public comment, click here and then click on the "Opinions" button on the top right of the webpage.
Here is the text of my public comment:
As the Clinical Director of Inclusive Counseling, I strongly support SB171, which aims to protect healthcare providers offering medically necessary gender-affirming services. This legislation is crucial for ensuring that we can provide evidence-based care without fear of legal repercussions, setting a standard for competent healthcare that respects the gender identity and expression of our patients.
Gender-affirming care is not only a medically necessary intervention but also a fundamental aspect of respecting individual autonomy and personal liberties. Studies have consistently shown that this care significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, improves quality of life, and enhances overall health outcomes for transgender individuals.
In Nevada, where individual autonomy and personal responsibility are deeply valued, it is essential that we support policies that allow individuals to make informed decisions about their own bodies and health. SB171 aligns with these values by ensuring that healthcare providers can offer gender-affirming services without fear of disciplinary action, thereby supporting individuals in exercising their right to self-determination.
By protecting providers, this bill promotes access to essential services that improve mental health and well-being. It's vital that this law explicitly includes protections for behavioral health professionals, who play a critical role in addressing the needs of transgender individuals through counseling and support. By doing so, we can ensure that our community receives comprehensive care that respects their autonomy and supports their well-being.
SB171 is a vital step forward in promoting inclusive healthcare, respecting individual liberties, and supporting evidence-based care. I urge lawmakers to endorse this bill and ensure it covers all necessary protections for behavioral health professionals, thereby safeguarding the autonomy of individuals to make informed decisions about their own health.
In solidarity,
Laura Baker, MA, MFT
