being texans

so, as many of you already know, we survived a whirlwind move to texas over the christmas break. within 2 1/2 weeks we found out we were moving, house-hunted, packed up our apartment, went to utah for christmas and made the 2-day drive from colorado to our new home.

insane.

but we're starting to feel settled in, getting used to our surroundings, slowly figuring out which direction we're driving, and really enjoying having so much more space to live in. we're in a town called nederland in the southeast corner of texas, right next to louisiana and on the gulf of mexico. we are renting a home, complete with back yard and basketball hoop in the driveway, much to the delight of the kids! we hear there's great cajun food- including alligator- to try, we have palm trees in our neighborhood, and we no longer have to drive 2 hours to buy a pair of shoes. :)

the kids seem to be adjusting to their new school well. kayla's teacher reminds her of her 1st grade teacher in colorado, and she loves her. brandon is making some new buddies and loves the fact that we live close enough for them to walk or ride bikes to school. it seems like a good place for them to be.
however, having to sign a form that they are not allowed to paddle my children at school was a bit of a shock. i was speechless when i came across that form in our packet. apparently it's just part of living in texas. welcome to the south!

we have our things unpacked, we have pictures hanging on the walls... now if we could just figure out a way to bring all our friends and family with us whenever we move...

being on vacation 2009

summer vacation was spent in the four corners region this year. we enjoyed time in new mexico, arizona, utah and then back to colorado. we hiked a lot, ate a lot, spent a lot of time in the car, had a lot of fun with family, and just enjoyed ourselves a lot! here are some highlights from our trip:

being all about the zen

last night anna was cuddling with her daddy while our family watched a movie. i noticed her eyes were closed, and since it was too late in the evening for her to have a nap asked pesche to make sure she hadn't fallen asleep. he shook her a bit, tickled her and told her not to sleep, and much to his surprise she said,

"i was just closing my eyes to find my inner peace."

honestly!

being airborne

we've not had a lot of excitement here in good old lamar lately- just the one-day-at-a-time variety, which ends up not being noteworthy. hence the lack of recent posts. but my sweet husband got on my case last night and informed me i was getting a bit too lackadaisical in the blog department, so i have resolved to update more often, even at the risk of boring you readers!

pesche goes flying every chance he gets and is now officially registered with the faa as a student pilot. he passed his physical and is on his way to getting his license. the weather (read: southeast colorado wind) doesn't always cooperate and has slowed the process down a bit, but he'll get there.

a couple weeks ago pesche and his instructor flew me and his instructor's wife to colorado springs to have a wonderful korean dinner (paul, the instructor, is also korean). instead of a 6-hour round-trip drive we flew, ate, and were back home in 5 1/2 hours. i think i could get used to that...
the plane itself was technically a 6-seater, but i have no idea where you'd put the last 2 passengers. they'd have to be small enough to sit on the floor in the baggage area. it felt like we were all sitting in the cockpit, but it got us where we needed to go. and i didn't get airsick, which is saying something!

Image
this (above) is the twin commanche we flew in to springs. note that pesche is a whopping 5' 8" on a good day... and he's nearly as tall as the cockpit. i have to admit i was very nervous until we got in the air, but once we were up it was smooth flying!

flying lessons take place in a cessna 150 single-propeller plane (below) that's basically just a cockpit with wings. the kind you see in the movies. the kind that always crash into the tops of trees and hang upside down while the hero finds a way to save the day... the kind that make you nervous just looking at them. but hey, who's worried?!

Imagei have to admit i'm a bit jealous that he's the one taking lessons and not me. maybe someday... but until then i'll just sit back and enjoy the view from 8,500 feet.

being 3 going on 23...

yesterday after school anna wanted to play nickjr.com on the computer. i got her all set up, went to the games page and asked her if that was where she wanted to be.

her response? "yes. you're free to go."

where does she learn this stuff?
