ICC: Where’s the Loot?

31 01 2010

This is going to be a bit ranty, but here goes. A long, long while back, I remember reading a post by Ghostcrawler or one of the other Blues. It basically said that ToC wasn’t great loot-wise because there were only 5 bosses, so they didn’t have a lot of room to spread the loot around. With ICC, well, problem solved: we’d have  bosses galore! I took that to mean “hey, Elemental Shamans, guess what? You’ll finally get some gear!”

I thought wrong.

I’ve come to accept that Elemental mail is pretty sparse, but come on, it’s getting a little ridiculous now. I know that yeah, I’m not in a 25 man guild, so I don’t have access to mail from there, but… seriously. There are currently zero well-itemized mail bracers or boots in any WotLK 10-man raids. Think about that… if you didn’t take cloth or leather, or run 25-mans, you’d be screwed, and forced to take resto gear instead. It’s not much better for belts and capes, and jeez, I didn’t even replace my Naxx-25 weapon throughout the entirety of Ulduar! Icecrown, to be fair, does have a few pieces of Elemental mail. They are, unfortunately, pants, gloves, and shoulders.

The exact gear you’ll be replacing with tier. And on top of this,  the first piece drops from Professor Putricide. If your guild can’t clear up through that, well… enjoy a long grind using only Frost Emblems.

Granted, Blizzard has finally thrown Ele Shamans a bone with some craftable mail boots, and mail we can buy with emblems that *gasp* is correctly itemized! I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that it’s the first piece of emblem mail for us that doesn’t suck. It’s just frustrating that I’ve already had to resort to getting leather for an upgrade, and that there’s been a boatload of mail for Enhancement and Resto. Argh. Anyway, I feel it’s my duty to list the loot that is in ICC 10 for Elemental Shamans. For mail options, look out for:

Rippling Flesh Kilt – Leggings, from Putricide.
Stormbringer Gloves – Gloves, from Valithria Dreamwalker.
Lich Wrappings – Cloak, from Valithria Dreamwalker.
Shoulderguards of Crystalline Bone – Shoulders, from Sindragosa.

There are, of course, plenty of non-mail options

Sister’s Handshrouds – Cloth hands, from Lady Deathwhisper
Boots of the Frozen Seed – Leather boots, from Lady Deathwhisper
Icecrown Spire Sandals – Cloth boots, from Deathbringer Saurfang
Kilt of Untreated Wounds – Cloth leggings, from Festergut
Ether-Soaked Bracers – Cloth bracers, from Rotface
Cauterized Cord – Cloth belt, from Putricide.
Shoulders of Ruinous Senility – Cloth shoulders, from Putricide
Cowl of Malefic Repose – Cloth helm, from Blood Queen Lana’thel
Robes of Azure Downfall – Cloth chest, from Sindragosa

As for trinkets, rings, necklaces, and weapons, we’ve got:

Soulcleave Pendant – Necklace, from Deathbringer Saurfang
Pendant of Split Veins – Necklace, from Putricide
Cerise Coiled Ring – Ring, from the Blood Prince Council
Muradin’s Spyglass – Trinket from the Gunship Battle
Bleak Coldarra Carver – Dagger, from Sindragosa

That should sum it all up! Taking a look at the loot, it’s obviously pretty sparse for mail. A few things to mention; I’d recommend the necklace from Saurfang over Putricide, due to the gem slot difference, and the fact that hit/crit pales in comparison to haste/crit, especially now that we’ve got plenty of hit items available. If you have the money or time, I’d recommend trying to get the Battered Hilt, since the only decently itemized dagger is pretty far in, and once again, it’s a hit/crit weapon. You’ll also notice there’s no shield; try to join an ICC 25 PuG, since our BiS shield drops off Marrowgar. So, good luck and good hunting… you’ll need it.

Week(s) in Review: Challenger Sayis

29 01 2010

Yeesh, I have a few Shaman-related posts written up but nothing me-related. In the past couple weeks, a lot has happened, but the title says it all: I’m a Challenger! Very cool, especially because I was only doing 3’s casually. I’ll get to that eventually; in the meantime, back to the start of the summary.

I’ll pick up where I left off, waaaaay back last Friday. That was a weekend full of PvP, and the last before the season’s end. With time running out, not only did I get enough rating for Challenger, I hit 1800 in 2s Friday night. 1800. Wow. I never thought I’d see the day, but, after some furious honor-grinding Saturday, I was kicking back and enjoying my new Relentless weapon and shield.

Image

My Relentless weapon and shield. Snazzy.

Sunday’s raid saw us down Rotface, but our attempts on Putricide were underwhelming and we called it for the night. On Monday I ground up the last bit of rating that would ensure the Challenger title, and Tuesday had little of note. Wednesday, we were back in ICC 10 for our weekly raid and we cleared the usual, Rotface included. I got lucky when the Boots of the Frozen Seed dropped, and our druid wasn’t around to pick them up, making me the first in line. With the boots, the non-mail pieces I’m wearing is up to 3. Come on, Blizzard, show me some Elemental Shaman love! Moving on, our few Putricide attempts were washes, and the raid was called. Thursday was BG-tastic, since I was trying to get honor capped in anticipation of the upcoming season. Friday was pretty cool, since I decided rather spontaneously to lead an ICC 25 PuG. At 1 am. Things actually went really well, and we one-shot every boss until a wipe-fest on Saurfang, where we ended up calling it. The shield dropped, and someone else rolled a 96. I sighed, and then /rolled a 95. “Crushed” would have been a great way to describe the feeling. I did, however, win one very important piece of gear; I’d say even more important than my shield. The Ring of Rapid Ascent was a huge upgrade to my Ulduar 25 ring, and since every single caster wants it, it was huge to win it. I’ll be getting plenty of use out of it, and I’ll probably be using that until the end of Wrath. Good stuff. Saturday, it was back to the BG grind, and Sunday, we stepped back into ICC to kill Putricide.

It went horribly.

When I say horribly, I do in fact mean horribly. We were just straight up… bad. People weren’t switching quickly, others ran toward the brown slime rather than away, and we used up every one of our attempts without getting him below 50%. Yeesh. It wouldn’t be as bad if the fight didn’t seem downright simple coming off of Rotface. With the raid over, we resolved to try again next week, and I went to bed that night feeling rather defeated.

This week has been much better. Despite the arena season’s delay, the Challenger title (which I got with Tuesday’s reset) has kept me content, and I’m honor capped at last. In addition, yesterday’s raid went way better than our prior run. We one-shotted every boss, and took out Rotface in a few tries; I’m really getting the hang of kiting the slime around. As for Putricide, well, we haven’t gotten him yet. But our first attempts of the night were completely different. Everyone switched when they needed to and worked together, and we got him to 36% before wiping after one of our healers dc’d. I’m confident that this Sunday, we’ll take him down. Last night I joined a ToC 25 raid that was pretty awful, and we called it on the Twins after a couple hours of raiding. The cape I was looking for, as usual, didn’t drop.

So, the past two weeks have been good. Some new gear, new experiences and a new title. Putricide looks like he’s gonna drop this Sunday, and I hope my pants drop too.

Pun intentional.

January To-Do List

19 01 2010

It’s hard to believe that 2009, and the first decade of the new millennium, are over. It’s almost strange to think, but I started playing WoW only a year ago. In one year, I’ve gone from 1-80, become an officer in my guild and a part of the core raid team, become (relatively) competent at PvP, and much, much more. It’s been a great year, and as usual, I’ll look at my list for last month:

  1. Get the Mechano-hog – Done
  2. Kill Anub’arak in ToC 25 – Ditto
  3. Hit 1650 in 2s – Done in time for the month’s end
  4. Defeat 3/4 bosses in ICC – Surprisingly enough, we went 4/4

December was the first month that I actually achieved every one of my goals. Getting the ‘hog and the Anub’arak kill on the same day was great, and the 1650 rating got me a Battlemaster’s trinket, which has saved my life on countless occassions. I was a little surprised by how well ICC went, given the beating we took in Ulduar, but the difficulty of the raid is starting to ramp up. And now, the first goals of 2010:

  1. 1750 in 2s
  2. Go 7/7 in ICC

… Yeah, that’s actually it. I’ve got my mount, I haven’t missed a random dungeon yet, and I’m well on my way through Ashen Verdict rep. So far, I’m past 1800 in 2s and we’re 6/7 in ICC. I’m pumped for our last couple weeks, and the attempts we’ll be putting in Putricide.

3.3 Impressions, ICC: Impressive

19 01 2010

With a new patch, there’s a new raid, and this time we’ve got the finale for the expansion, Icecrown Citadel. And man, is it good. It makes ToC feel like filler (which it was). Gone is that horrid one room, five boss instance. Back are the trash pulls, epic fights, epic locations, and variety. There are now eleven bosses, spread across four different wings, and nary a Jormungar Worm in sight. What I’m trying to say is, this is good instance design. ToC felt lazy and bland, and a bit pointless (whoever doesn’t die gets to go to Icecrown? That’s the plan?!). This is much more direct: we’re taking the fight to Arthas himself, and we’re going to smash anything in our way. The only epic moment of ToC was dropping into Anub’arak’s pit for the first time. Thus far in Icecrown, I’ve taken out the Skybreaker, saved a Scourge-ified Saurfang, battled high above on pathways built around a towering glacier… and there’s more to come. From what I’ve seen so far, I’d say that on first pass, Ulduar was better, but not by a ton. ICC is definitely above what Naxx or ToC could hope to be.

As far as the fights go, they’ve been solid thus far. Marrowgar and Deathwhisper were the standard “is your raid competent?” style fights that seem to greet players in WoTLK raids. My guild cleared those on our first night of raiding without too much trouble, and they’re pretty fun. The real excitement from the first quarter, though, comes from the Gunship Battle and Deathbringer Saurfang. The Gunship Battle is easy, admittedly, but it’s an extremely unique fight. Rocketing over to the other ship to burn down the sorcerer before the tank dies, then flying back is fun, and doing damage to the ship instead of an actual NPC is a nice twist too. The music, too, adds a great deal to the fight; this and the Bronze Jam are probably my two favorite tunes in recent memory. Saurfang, for me at least, is a fight that requires a bit more coordination. Myself and one other guildie are always tasked with kiting and killing the adds, and it can get a little hectic towards the end. Add to this the fact that death or a big mistake will result in a wipe, and I’m a bit stressed during this fight. On our first attempts this fight was somewhat ridiculous, but now that we’ve geared up and practiced we’re consistently one-shotting it.

The Plague Quarter, thus far, has been a blast. Plentiful trash has meant lots of rep, and I’m approaching revered with the Ashen Verdict. Both of the Gluth-esque dog fights were nice throwbacks as well, and probably tougher than the boss in Naxx. No joke. As for Festergut, Rotface and Prof. Putricide, well, they’ve made the first quarter look easy. Festergut’s coordinated DPS burn wasn’t too bad, and the mechanics of the fight aren’t exactly hard. However, Rotface gave us trouble for hours before we got him down (our first kill was last night). I got the role of kiting/cleansing, and promptly strapped on some PvP gear and went into my PvP spec. Then, my nightmare began. What starts off as a slow-paced kiting increases in its frenzy until “chaos” is an understatement. Juggling keeping my distance with holding aggro, doing some damage to the boss, cleansing, and staying alive was made all the more difficult by trying to kite the ooze blobs together. Difficult because they can be buggy, and because other raiders don’t always put them into ideal positions for me. I got the fight down eventually, but it didn’t make it any easier, and our need for increased DPS meant we ended up two-healing the fight, creating even less margin for error. On our final attempt, we got the kill, and the last thirty seconds were absolutely nuts. People were running towards me from different directions as I kited the ooze, and I cleansed each of them… blobs were forming, I was going through slime and taking damage. In all of this, I saw my health hit 2k. I popped off a stoneclaw totem. My health held steady, then exploded upwards a second later as heals hit me. The totem had saved my life, and I continued doing my job. Just as I was getting overwhelmed and losing control trying to kite it to a few smaller blobs, I saw Rotface go down. Holy hell. What an absolutely challenging, ridiculous, and utterly satisfying fight.

We only put in two attempts on Putricide, but it looked to be an easier fight than Rotface’s craziness. I can only hope so, since the only piece in ICC 10 that’s itemized for me drops off of him. I’m looking forward to the rest of Icecrown, though… I can only hope that defeating Arthas is as epic as the picture I have in my head.

Summing Up The Last Month

15 01 2010

Last blog post: December 8th. Yeesh. And it isn’t like I didn’t have time, or stopped playing WoW; no, instead, exams for school came up, so I put off blogging.  Afterwards I went on vacation and put off blogging. Now, back at school, I can’t put it off any longer. The problem is, a lot has happened in the last month. Between 3.3’s changes, Icecrown Citadel, the random dungeon finder, new gear, PvP, questing, and the other random going-ons, well, one post wouldn’t cut it, and five or more posts would be a lot of  words. So instead, I’m gonna break it down into this: what I’ve gotten done over the last month, my impressions of the new instances and 3.3 as a whole, and the Icecrown Citadel raid. So, here goes.

3.3 started off like any other patch: lag. Lots of it, although not nearly as bad as 3.2 as long as I stayed away from major cities. The first night of the patch meant instance server problems as everyone tried to get into the new heroics at once, although we managed to get through Forge and Pit before dying in Halls of Reflection, losing connection, and then getting locked out for the night. In the coming days, I did waaaay too many dungeons, enough that I snagged four pieces of t9 for healing and the Patient title by Friday. Yep, it took me three days. Yikes. Our guild progressed pretty well through ICC as well, getting the first quarter on farm well before the new wing was released.

Going into the New Year, I snagged some more new gear. I got Suffering’s End from a ToC 25 PuG, and my t10 shoulders. Disappointingly, they look way less BA than the 25-man version. So, looks like I’ll be PuG’ing out ICC 25 soon. Loot-wise, I also picked up Muradin’s Spyglass, bumping out my trusty Eye of the Broodmother. Soon after the new year, I picked up my second piece of t10; I know the perk of having Elemental Mastery cooldown faster isn’t great, but it’s still fun to use. If I can use it before Bloodlust, as well, I can have Mastery back up very quickly. As for the new quarter, we downed Festergut, only to get stopped in our tracks by Rotface. This is going to be a very tricky fight.

Before and after: Partial t10 and Suffering's End at my side.

PvP-wise, it’s been a phenomenal last month. I hit 1650 in December, and only a few days ago, incredibly, reached 1750. Similar to the prior season, I’ve gotten into high-level gear just in time for the season to end. Our team is still unconventional, but it’s a blast to play, especially when we line up our CC’s properly. I also had what I’d call my Best Match Ever. Facing down a Rogue/Resto Druid at the Dalaran Sewers at around 1730 rating, they took out my partner around two minutes into the match. At that point, I threw a new flame shock/insta cast lava burst onto the rogue, who was at full health, then got stunned… I thunderstormed them off the platform in different directions once I broke out. With that, he was at half health, and his druid hadn’t bothered to heal him. I hit him with a lightning bolt to get him down to around 6k health, then a lava burst… dead. Suddenly, it was me against a tree, and I was at 1k health. I threw down a grounding and stoneclaw totem, 2 lesser healing waves, and line-of-sighted the druid behind the nearby boxes. We ran around in circles until I let him approach, only to thunderstorm him away and heal to full health. With both of us in a standoff, he tried to rez his rogue, and I interrupted him each time with a flame shock. I started trying to rez my partner, and he interrupted me… this went on for several, tedious-yet-intense minutes. Finally, he ran over to try to damage me, and I avoided dying again. Only, this time, as he was running back, I started rezzing my priest, LoS’d behind the boxes where he’d died. The druid got halfway across the arena before he realized what was happening, but it was too late. I’d even thrown a grounding totem to avoid getting insta-casted, and my priest was up within moments. We went on to win, and a victory in the match afterwards got us to 1750. Good times.

So that’s my month, summed up. Random dungeons, raids, and fooling around with my guildies. Achievement-wise, I snagged Master of Arms, a few classic Dungeon achieves, and for PvP: Just the Two of Us: 1750 and Mine from Isle of Conquest.I’m looking forward to the coming weeks, with the new arena season and new fights. Onwards!

And yes, I realize that the PvP-battle was almost half of this post. But man was it a good fight!
