Happy Birthday Lynn!

The most exciting thing that happened this week is that Lynn turned 25 years old! THANK YOU to the many who sent e-mails, called, & wrote on my Facebook wall! I was blessed beyond belief!

The Lord blessed me a lot by having our friends here to celebrate with us. They're staying with us for a couple weeks as they work on another project in the area. Abby brought a box cake with her & made it for us. We also went out for a great Turkish meal (I had an Adana Kebab) - the best we've had since being here! We also got dessert waffles, see our post on our first trip to Turkey for more info!

We started riding the double decker bus to class Monday, Wednesday, Friday because it's not quite as crowded. We usually get a seat! Unfortunately besides Lynn's birthday this week wasn't super exciting... hopefully we can share a bit more next week!

Valentine's Day!

We'll start with what we forgot last week! Since it wasn't part of our calendar I forgot it even happened when I posted. We had the privilege of being invited to our friend's home. It was holiday/vacation here for the schools so his sisters & nieces & nephews were in town & another sister from the area was also visiting with her kids & husband. We got to meet his mother, with whom he lives (he's single), as well. It was a wonderful time - speaking in Turkish & eating home-made Turkish food. We had lamacun (kinda like super-thin crust pizza & a taco shell in one), which we love! And we had cig kufte (raw meatballs w/ lots of spices) which Dan likes more than Lynn. We hope to continue to visit more of our friends' homes in the future!

Valentine's Day was a lot of fun! For starters Dan got Lynn flowers! Then, Lynn made a heart shaped pizza for dinner. The past two years we've ordered a heart-shaped pizza from Valentino's in Ames but this year we were a bit too far way :) Currently this is one of our only family traditions - which we decided was because on most of the other holidays we're with our families celebrating the way we did as children. Lynn also made heart shaped cookies because we had some friends over on Friday night. For our Saturday movie we watched the Queen, which was a lot of fun to get a peak into the English cutlure. We're becoming fans of Historical Documenary type films.

Another fun highlight is that Lynn is the star of our langauge class... no, she's not the best at Turkish but for some reason everyone uses her as the example. "Lynn does the cooking." "Lynn sings very well." "Lynn makes good cakes." were all the phrases used on Monday in class. Not to mention we learned the months & were asked when our birthday is - and Lynn's is the only one in February!

One of Dan's highlight's was getting to play basketball on Sunday - the first time since we arrived! It was a bit rainy & chilly but that didn't stop him. Hopefully he'll get to play a bit more often now than once a month.

The Cat Walk

We went for a walk on Saturday during a beautiful Marmara Sea sunset. We took this photo on our cell phones... that's right, our cell phones! Amazing view of God's creation... we are blessed!Image

We also saw a few cats along the way, we didn't take pictures of all of them, but here's a few. The little kitten we so cute how could we resist petting him!?!

A few other highlights follow... Listening to John Piper give a sermon on "What Is the Recession For?". It was challenging & insightful; we'd suggest it to anyone!

Last week Lynn joined a knitting class, so soon she will hopefully know how to make more than just scarves as well as meet a few more ladies!

For lunch on Sunday we've been having classic "hot" breakfasts, like pancakes, french toast, etc. This week we had "Cowboy Coffee Cake", one of Dan's family favorites! It was wonderful & enjoyed by all!

We've also had lunch with a few friends, new & old, this week. One of our old ISU friends is finishing up his masters here in Ottoman history & it was a joy to see him & catch up. Today we had lunch with some new friends who are in our language class with us. She even had made some lemon meringue pie yesterday that we got to eat after lunch - what a treat!

That's all for now... until next week!

BIRDS!!!!!

We first have to explain the title of our post... On Monday evening we met some friends from America in Taksim, so we had to take a ferry across to the other side again. All was well, we were sitting on the back deck, enjoying the view, & listening to/viewing our language lessons (more on that to come) when ALL OF A SUDDEN we heard this screeching sound. You guessed it, there were birds flying right along behind us, very close might we add. We took a little video for you to get the feel for it...

We had a great time with our friends & showed them a great costume/thrift shop that some of our Turkish friends had showed us a week before. There's just about everything you can imagine in this place. We only put the hats on but it was still a great time!

We also walked by the Galata Tower on our way to meet our friends & thought we'd take a picture. We visited it when we were here last year... click here for a link to that post & more pictures & explaination.

Now to a little bit more about our everyday life. We've been working on learning Turkish for about 30 hours a week. Up to this point we've been listening to the "Learnables" which are tapes & books with pictures that go together. So you listen to them say a word & look at the picture to understand what word they're saying. Then they get more & more complicated, combining the different words that you've learned. We've also just been meeting people & practicing our Turkish with them. For the last two weeks we've been meeting with a language helper. We bring pictures of things & he tells us what they are in Turkish & then he'll say them and we point to which one he's said. At the end we video it so we can review it without him. It's been great & we feel like we've learned a lot already, even though we have a long way to go! Here's the picture of a "keci" that's in our movies.

Today was the first day of another part of our language learning, a formal language class. It's in Kadikoy, about and hour total travel time from our house (but we can spend most of it reading or reviewing language on the train). A highlight of Kadikoy in general is the bull, located fairly centrally & a typical meeting place for people. Here's the picture Dan took of it with his cell phone & then transfered to his Palm and then to the computer! Technology is amazing!

Speaking of cell phones, that was another adventure of the week, getting cell phones. We got a great package deal on them so we have the same phone. Most of the phones here are on a "Pay-As-You-Go" Plan, as we'd call it in the States, although it's called "Hazir Kart" or "Ready Card" and you buy "kontors", which are like minutes but depending on who you call in what network or if you text (or short meessage) different amounts are used.

Our Cat... well, this really isn't our cat, but he likes to spend time in the chair on our porch. We haven't much more interaction than this picture but perhaps Dan will win him over here sometime. There are quite a few stray cats & dogs, but really not overly many, just enough that you feel like there are animals around. There's even a few REALLY cute little kittens at the end of our road.
