As my time in the Tetons ended there were still come great opportunities to watch and photograph the moose. This handsome bull was crossing the flats on a mission of his own.

One morning I came across a bull that was staying rather close to a cow and calf that were feeding on a hillside. He stood just below them for a long time. Eventually the cow lead her calf down the hill and across the flats to cross the road. They were likely heading for the river. As they started to move the bull moved in closer and the pace picked up.

She and the calf crossed the road before the bull. He knew pushing her too much would not work in his favor. I did manage to get an image of them close together just before she moved on again to the river.

The late afternoon light was ideal as I watched this bull. He was following

The morning of the day I was leaving the campground I found four bulls of assorted ages, along with a cow, in the campground. To my great pleasure the senior bull was Hoback, and it was he that followed/chased the cow to the river. The other three did a bit of sparring and eventually headed towards the river. Hoback was rather thin and showing his age but he sure was game to chase that cow.

2025 Late September in GTNP

Late September and the moose are active in rut. Bulls following cows, sometimes sparring over one, sometimes moving around searching. A good time to be out and about to find them is first thing in the morning.

Not every meeting between two bulls results in a fight, and even the winners sometimes have to be very persistent or patient when courting.

The fall colors of the cottonwoods and aspens along wit the willows make for great backgrounds for the moose as they are looking their best with deep colors and shiny coats. This particular bull was hanging around a cow so patiently for hours.

2025 Moose Courtship

This bull moose appeared in the campground one morning following a cow.

Image

The next day many of us got to watch as he courted the cow in a much more open area outside the campground. He made a “rut pit” and successfully lured the cow to lay down with him for a while.

Having completed that bit of courtship both of them got up and moved around a bit. Eventually they moved into the trees and laid down. I did not hang around to see when they decided to get up since they will often lay down for hours.

2025 Tetons, one

The Tetons are a wonderful place to spend some time. If you’re patient and willing to do some searching you can find plenty to see. I really enjoy watching the moose in the fall, they are sleek and handsome. The bulls are usually following the cows around waiting for the cows to be receptive. Their interaction can be a lesson in patience and persistence.

The fall is also the time of year when the bulls test each other, sometimes in competition for a cow and sometimes a younger one has the urge to test himself against another bull. Sparring sessions like the photos here are usually rather slow motion, seldom end in injuries and are good practice for both bulls.

Early mornings are a good time to look for moose and sometimes the weather provides an interesting backdrop. In this case the ground fog was a nice factor.

Just before I was scheduled to leave Yellowstone I was up on the East Entrance road and found a large group of people watching a grizzly boar protecting his find. Apparently there had been an elk bull caught in the deep mud and unable to get out. A ranger mercifully shot it and without much delay this boar was drawn to the area. He dragged the elk out of the mud and proceeded to protect his find.

I spent less than 9 hours there over 2 days but was able to see 3 other bears come close but he discouraged any of their attempts to take part in the bounty. Among them were Snow, Jam and another bear.

2025 Hayden Valley, Yellowstone

Spotting and being able to photograph a Great Gray Owl is a rare treat. One afternoon on the way to Hayden Valley an owl flew across in front of me and I realized it was a Great Gray. I managed to turn around and park, fortunately it was in plain sight and appeared to be in no rush. It’s amazing how quickly folks stopped to see what I was photographing, an “owl jam” soon happened.

Bison, and elk are often seen in Hayden Valley. It was interesting to see the elk cows grazing in the Yellowstone River. The Grizzly hung around for several days feeding up for hibernation.

2025 Big Horn NF

This year I stayed in a different campground in the Big Horn NF. It had a lot more large pines for shade and if it had been hotter that would have been great. There was minimal sun for the solar panels, but it is very close to the area where the moose hang out so that was a big plus. And there was even a cow with her calf that frequented the campground, along with a couple of handsome bulls.

In the space of 3 days I saw just over 60 moose, in some cases it was a matter of seeing the same one more than once but that did not happen all that often.

You pay a premium price for fuel up there and there are no grocery stores so you have to be sure you have what you need for food before heading up for a stay but over all it’s a great place to spend a few days.

2025 McCullough Peaks Mustangs

Every time I return to watch these handsome horses it is such a positive experience. Seeing the action among the adults and watching the new foals and looking for the yearlings I saw the previous year as foals is to me such a pleasure.

As usual some of the mares were in season, so the stallions were testing each other and raising the dust. The palomino foal was OK once the dust settled but it was scary watching.

This yearling Buckskin was a tiny foal when I saw him in 2024. I hope that next year this little buckskin foal will be around to see.

2025 Yellowstone August

I had nearly two weeks in Yellowstone in August and in that time was able to see a variety of critters, from the very small to the very large and even some masters of the air. It’s fun to watch the Pikas gathering their winter food. The fawn shown here is one of a set of triplets. The Peregrine falcon shown is just one of five I had the pleasure of watching hunt.

Larger critters included the wolf which was hunting in the sage brush and a grizzly sow and her cub working on a bison carcass. The sow and her cub were a very long distance away so the photos are not great. However they give you show you some of the life cycle in nature. They did not kill the bison and in fact had a hard time getting much off it until a larger bear broke it open a bit. The bison shown here had just crossed the Yellowstone River.

In June while photographing the wolves (shown in an earlier post) a new and very little critter showed itself to me.

2025 the Reservoir

Over the recent years I’ve often boondocked at a reservoir in WY. This most recent visit was as pleasant as past ones with the bonus of watching a new critter. I got a great site overlooking a very quiet corner of the water and it turned out to be the primary spot for at least seven muskrats. They seemed to have a den under the willow below my campsite so I got to watch them come and go a bit.

Of course there were some shore birds including a Great Blue Heron, and some others.

The White Pelicans were there, too, and this time there were some younger ones with a bit of their darker feathers.

One evening it was very clear with a nearly full moon so I took a photo of it.
