if I can face my life with half the honesty and humor as Carrie Fisher did, I think I'll be okay.
coincidence that they cast dennis quaid aka harrison ford Lite™ as carrie fisher’s love interest?? i think not!!!! 👀
this movie is what the inside of my brain looks like when i am having a bad time!!! and even occasionally when i am having a good time.
there is this beautiful quote from Carrie Fisher’s source novel that i wish had made it in here somewhere: “She wanted to be tranquil, to be someone who took walks in the late-afternoon sun, listening to the birds and crickets and feeling the whole world breathe. Instead, she lived in her head like a madwoman locked in a tower, hearing the wind howling through her hair and waiting for someone to come and rescue her from feelings things so deeply that her bones burned.”
it is 100% okay that it is not…
"Ever since you were a little girl, I had this feeling....I don't know, that'd I'd lose you, that you'd be taken from me early."
Holy shit, this line is haunting.
A film of great performances, many of which only get 1 or 2 scenes. Reiner, Dreyfuss, Bening. But Gene Hackman specifically…damn. My 2nd Sheriff Harry S. Truman jumpscare of the week
This hasn't aged as well as I'd expected, but the scene where Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine go back-to-back dinner party musical performances is in the my-heart-hurts hall of fame. Streep's love and affection for her mom colliding with the realization of her ego monstrosity is some of the best acting ever committed to film. Also: HACKMAN!
Meryl Streep played Carrie Fisher in Postcards from the Edge directed by Mike Nichols, Carrie Fisher was in When Harry Met Sally, which was written by Nora Ephron, who wrote Heartburn, which is autobiographical and turned into a movie directed by Mike Nichols, in which Nora Ephron is played by Meryl Streep. Legends only.
A collection of real time thoughts:
~ This one had been on my 'to watch' list for a while, now it feels like both the best and worst time for me to tick it off.
~ What kind of airport is this!?
~ God damnit, I ALWAYS fall for the 'movie within a movie' trope scenes in films like this!
~ Oh shit that was a quick tonal change.
~ This is making me sad already.
~ I know the character isn't supposed to *be* Carrie Fisher, but Streep is doing a great Carrie Fisher.
~ I'm all about this rehab counsellor's fashion sense.
~ Oh god and now here's Shirley MacLaine. RIP Debbie Reynolds. :-(
~ This is funny.…
We don’t talk about Annette Bening’s perfect one-scene performance nearly enough!
Holy shit this picture floored me. One of the great depictions of mothers and daughters ever committed to film. Why don’t more people talk about this one more? I mean it’s about so many things — mothers and daughters, show business, actors, addiction — but also it’s so completely specific and simple and true. Also: every single person involved in this picture from director to actors to all craft departments were literally masters of their craft, and it shows.
