Cult Movie Challenge 2025 #70 - Week 35: Shaw Brothers
An absolute fantastical feast for the eyes, with vibrantly coloured sets and elaborate ritual sequences that are often rather gruesome. The rechewing and sharing of food (if you count maggot-infested meat and durian fruit as food) by a trio of black magicians, and then adding what I assume was a chickenโs arse (?) to the mix, was next level and mildly stomach-turning.

The most common attribute of most murder cases is how often they erupt from trivial circumstances: a side-eye analysed too deeply, a poorly timed phrase spoken to the wrong intoxicated individualโฆ Minor disputes that spiral out of control into deadly scenarios. This film is a prime example.
Now, rationally, you might question the motives of the protagonists...why don't they just walk away from the situation? Because weโre prideful monkeys, thatโsโฆ

It's easy to see how the cinematographic choices in this have divided audiences.
On the one hand, we have a dark fantasy epic which cements itself as an especially gory and atmospheric entry in the genre. Boundary-pushing in more ways than one, this tense affair walks an intriguing thin line between class commentary and a home-invasion trauma.
These kinds of people, of course, are amongst us: the hyper-chatty, quickly over-friendly, over-sharing type... and the aggressive friendliness they exhibit can often be overwhelming... but is it criminal? Hooptober X #3 - 1st Country: Japan
Quite an experimental movie, but it seems to constantly pay off. Not one frame is wasted, whilst absolutely oozing with abstract ideas that showcase a broad artistic talent from the director and all involved. It really does earn its cult following.
By far my favourite moment was the hacked-off fingers playing the catchy and minimalist movie score on the piano.
A movie you could easily recommend to almost anyone on the basis of it being so different and mind-blowingly good for its time.

Cult Movie Challenge 2025 #79 - Week 40: Slasher Movie
So, Wes went meta before Scream then... colour me surprised, as I had never seen any mention of this before! And it's a valiant effort for sure, with many self-referential layers interacting to create a rather unique take on the genre.
The star of the show though, for me, was not Freddy... not.at.all (in fact, for a NOES movie, his presence was seen considerably less)... it was Dylan (Miko Hughes).โฆ
