I think we have surpassed the amount of necessary Toy Storyses that we ever needed, but I still support the message. It definitely was heavy-handed, then again I am not really the main audience for its message and really just treating this as a vessel of nostalgia. It works for me. But I cried for 3/4ths of this because I realized there was a day I played with every toy last and never really knew it. Like, I had a Buzz Lightyear and a Woody and there was a last day I played with them. And now I’m crying about it again
I am trying to figure out how I feel about this movie because part of me knows it was nonsensical and incoherent but the other part of me knows that Yorgos Lanthimos could have made the same exact movie and it would have gotten the Hamnet treatment (where a movie isn’t great but everyone tells you it is and Jessie Buckley is really good in it).
I liked Buckley here far more than in Hamnet. She is so good at channeling chaos and mania that this did so much more for me.
