like I love weir’s film but Joan Lindsay’s novel picnic at hanging rock is just such an incredible women’s story and the miniseries is such a breath of fresh air helmed by female writers and directors who have fleshed out these female characters lives and motivations in such a contemporary way that Lindsay intended that no man could capture. also: lesbianism
it's like the producers just handed over the book and a wad of cash to a 14 year old hot topic employee and gave them free rein of the project

me: does anyone get a little bit of a gay vibe?
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
big love for lesbians wanting to escape away into a giant rock's alternate dimension or something. bitch me too!
when I went into this I asked myself, who is going to be gay. the answer was surprisingly everyone.
This miniseries is a curiously poor adaptation of Picnic at Hanging Rock with unforgiveably bad music and direction. The rock has no sense of place or atmosphere and the story is very muddled. What directions the story was changed from the film were unnecessary. Natalie Dormer is the only standout but can't save this overdirected mess.
I can only imagine the people who love this haven't seen the superior Peter Weir film or read the book it was based on, which was a close adaptation. Just watch the film if you're interested.
there is a particular part of the movieverse that is reserved for remakes that by rights should die from embarrassment. this 2018 version of picnic at hanging rock has earned its place there. how could they take something so haunting, so atmospheric and...do this. its worse when they directly copy - the botticelli comment, miranda crossing the puddle, the girls filing up the rock...urgh - clunky, laughable. and then there's the extra bits - natalie dormer telling herself she's dreaming, the actual freakin' dream, the pegged up hair, virtually every character...wtf were they thinking?
now i haven't been to hanging rock for many a decade so decided to revisit on the google plane. there seems to be a movement away…
