PORTAGE — The City Council president is taking the mayor and police chief to task for spending $6,000 per month in overtime for city hall security.
Since Feb. 21, a police officer earning overtime has been stationed in the lobby of Portage City Hall, raising the ire of Portage City Council President Mark Oprisko and some others on the council who believe the security is excessive and unnecessary.

VALPARAISO — A 38-year-old Valparaiso-area man was sentenced Monday to 40 years behind bars after pleading guilty in a child molesting case the prosecutor called the worst he has ever seen.
Shannon Russum, of Washington Township, was declared a sexually violent predator and a credit-restricted felon, which means he will receive only one day credit for every seven days served, said Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford.

GRIFFITH — A Gary man and his 58-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital Monday after the man's Jeep ended up on its side following a two-vehicle crash, police said.
The 20-year-old Gary man was driving a red Jeep Grand Cherokee east on Ridge Road about 8:30 p.m. when he ran a red light and collided with a black Ford F-150 that was southbound on Broad Street, Griffith police Cmdr. Keith Martin said.

HOBART — Hobart police have released photographs of a woman believed to have stolen a woman's wallet out of her purse and is using the woman's credit cards to make fraudulent purchases.
Hobart Lt. James Gonzales said the victim came to the Police Department and said she thought her wallet was taken out of her purse while she was at work.
