AP VoteCast is a survey of the American electorate based on more than a decade of research and experimentation on how best to survey voters who cast ballots at polling places on Election Day, as well as the increasing share who vote early, absentee and by mail.
AP VoteCast was conducted in all 50 states by NORC at the University of Chicago for The Associated Press and Fox News, beginning on Oct. 31 and concluding as polls closed on Election Day. Surveys in 25 states combined interviews with a random sample of registered voters drawn from state voter files and with self-identified registered voters selected from opt-in online panels. In 25 additional states, interviews with self-identified registered voters selected from opt-in online panels were calibrated with interviews of randomly sampled registered voters nationwide. The national survey combined the results from each state survey with interviews among self-identified registered voters conducted using NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak® panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population.
