  • What if one of the most powerful educational experiences available to young people isn't played on a pitch or measured by a scoreboard? In our latest HMC blog, Adam Williams, Headmaster at Lord Wandsworth College, makes a compelling case for the Devizes to Westminster (DW) International Canoe Race – a 125-mile endurance challenge that develops resilience, teamwork, perseverance and self-belief in ways few activities can match. Read the full blog here: https://buff.ly/U0KUKNP For many schools, this is exactly the kind of opportunity that reflects the breadth and ambition of modern co-curricular education. As we continue to champion sport and extra-curricular provision, it's important that we celebrate and expand access to experiences beyond traditional team sports. Challenges like DW offer pupils a different route to participation, achievement and personal growth, regardless of gender or sporting background. The race is more than an endurance event; it's a moving classroom that teaches pupils how to prepare, collaborate, overcome setbacks and keep going when the finish line feels a very long way away. Encouragingly, a number of HMC member schools are already involved and have recently shared their experiences with the HMC Sports Committee. By showcasing best practice, resources and support, these members hope to inspire more schools to explore marathon canoeing and help secure the future of one of Britain's most remarkable sporting challenges. Could this be the next great co-curricular opportunity for your pupils? Read the blog: https://buff.ly/U0KUKNP #HMCSchools #SchoolSport #CharacterEducation

  • ❓Where can you find a speaker who live chatted with ChatGPT and got it to introduce him in the style of WWE? At today’s HMC Futures and Career Leaders’ Conference - the last event of our 25/26 Professional Development programme - book for the 26/27 programme here: https://lnkd.in/ea-cswfy It has been a lively and enlightening day exploring the following questions, and more, about the future world of work: ❓How can schools help pupils communicate capability beyond grades? ❓Is university worth it? ❓How can schools embed work experiences into the curriculum and ensure placements actually develop useful employability skills? Some of the thoughts that emerged were: 💡 The value of university was and is never just financial. 💡 Futures and careers leaders to make sure they’re getting buy in from across the school. 💡 There is no right or wrong way of doing work experience - anything pupils can do is valuable. 💡 Human skills continue to matter most and that jobs aren't disappearing they're just evolving and changing. Thanks to everyone involved and especially to our fantastic speakers, Bella Eccles of Tinker Tailor, Sarra Jenkins from Loughborough Grammar School, Danny Mirza FRSA, MSc, MA, MBA, and Dr Rachael Pearson of Oakham School and her panelists - Bodil Chambers, Ruth Davis (RCDP), Gina Visram and Ellen Weaver - for helping us explore the changing landscape of the world of work and how to prepare young people to enter it. Thanks also to Venatour Sports Travel for sponsoring today’s event - if you're a school with students interested in careers in the global sports industry, then do get in touch with MATT O REILLY and Nick Fearon to learn more about their innovative Careers in Sport programmes, where they provide students with unique opportunities to explore career pathways through behind-the-scenes access to some of the USA's leading professional sports organisations. All HMC Schools work hard to prepare their pupils for life beyond school - search ‘careers’ in the HMC blog to discover more about how: https://lnkd.in/ece7sHd6. We’re also pleased to support young people looking for work in HMC’s world-class schools by providing the opportunity to join the Talent Pool on HMC School Careers - our high-performing job search platform powered by SchoolRecruiter and our partnership with Eteach - in the first 6 months since launching this new initiative, we have filled 40 ECT roles and a further 50 graduate roles! • What makes school philanthropy successful? New insights from the latest The Institute of Development Professionals in Education (IDPE) benchmarking report reveal the six key factors that consistently underpin successful school fundraising, from active leadership and long-term strategy to sustained investment, strong relationships and demonstrating impact. With annual philanthropic income among participating schools more than doubling over the past six years, philanthropy is playing an increasingly important role in supporting schools' ambitions, widening opportunity and strengthening long-term sustainability. In our latest HMC blog, Mark O'Brien, Public Affairs Specialist, explores the practical lessons schools can learn from the latest data and how they can build a culture of philanthropy that delivers lasting impact. • A group of students participate in an outdoor learning activity, gathered around large sheets of paper covered with colourful drawings and notes. One student kneels in the foreground holding a notebook while others collaborate nearby. A quote overlay reads: “Schools that achieve significant philanthropic growth treat fundraising as a strategic priority rather than an occasional activity.” The scene conveys teamwork, engagement and the educational opportunities that philanthropy can help support.
  • We hope all our delegates at the Deputy Heads’ Conference have picked up a free notebook courtesy of HMC Corporate Partner iSAMS By IRIS and are already gathering lots of takeaways in it. So far, Richard Backhouse and Charlie Warshawski, PCC have both got us reflecting on communication - from public speaking to giving advice, and how to be honest even in complex situations. Also, how to build on existing skills and design operational systems that support deputy heads to build genuine staff buy-in and move beyond the reactive day-to-day problem solving to meaningful strategic impact. We’ve also enjoyed our first round of breakout sessions covering themes relating to our four conference pathways and, this afternoon, we’re looking forward to more - with sessions on attendance, digital strategy and data governance, UKVI compliance, positive parental engagement, school counselling and wellbeing models, admin overload, building a culture of professional learning, and preparing for headship. We’re grateful to all those sharing their expertise throughout the conference, not least our corporate partners RSAcademics, MSP LAB , Miriam Rich, The Wellbeing Hub and WorkNest Group. As well as our Platinum partner, Camps International, who opened the event talking about how school expeditions support pupils to build many of the skills being talked about throughout the conference - such as communication and resilience. If you’re with us here in Cheltenham, please do speak to them in the exhibition and discover how they can support your school, staff and pupils. #HMCDeputyHeads #HMCPD #HMCCorporatePartners

  • This week at HMC, Kate Howell, HMC Director of Education, is excited to be in Geneva at EduFest Le Rosey. As well as a great opportunity to meet up with Alison Sefton, Head of the Senior School at The Glasgow Academy, and other HMC school colleagues, it was good to hear Michelle Gyles-McDonnough (United Nations Assistant Secretary General) give a keynote address that introduced the themes of the event. Themes include: 🪴 how to thrive in a world of constant change 🤖 the philosophy of AI 🧑🏫 reflecting on the future of Ed. With thanks to Kim Kovacevic FCCT Director at Institut Le Rosey and all involved in #EdufestLeRosey - it is a great event and Kate is looking forward to sharing her key takeaways at HMC HQ next week.

  • This World Environment Day, we're reflecting on an important question: how do we move sustainability education from awareness to agency? In our latest HMC blog, Dan Woolley, Junior School Teacher and Sustainability Lead at Dulwich College (Singapore), explores how schools can make sustainability visible, practical and shared. From reducing food waste and embracing circular economy thinking to empowering student Sustainability Ambassadors, the article highlights how small actions, repeated across a community, can create meaningful change. By helping children understand the systems they are part of and giving them opportunities to shape them, schools can nurture the next generation of changemakers today, not someday. Read the full blog to discover how sustainability can become part of everyday school life and why small hands can have a big impact on the systems around them. ➡️ https://buff.ly/AbDOlxV #WorldEnvironmentDay #SustainabilityEducation #ClimateAction
