I’m neurodivergent. And yes, there are shortcuts even a professional organiser and cleaner takes in their own home. I’m not above it. None of us should be.
The Holiday Washing Spiral Over the holidays, keeping on top of washing is genuinely difficult. The kids are home, changing three times a day, throwing their PJs in the wash after one night. If you miss just one of your two loads a day, suddenly you’re two weeks behind.
And it’s not just “doing the washing.” It’s the gathering, the sorting, the washing, the waiting, the forgetting, the washing again, the dryer or hanging, the folding, and the putting away. When you’re doing that for three or more people — plus being a mum, keeping the kids occupied, cooking, cleaning, baking, trying to keep sane — it gets tough. Really tough.
My shortcut during the holidays? I stuff. I start to stuff clothes into drawers. Then when I see the rest is already stuffed, I just keep stuffing until everything is overflowing. Not pretty. Not Pinterest-worthy. But survival.
The key is, I know that in February when routine comes back, I sort again. Fresh start. Clean slate. Until the next December-January chaos rolls around.
The First Weekend After They Go Back So, that first weekend after the kids go back to school — I sit down and I sort.
Here’s exactly how I do it, step by step. It’s not complicated. It doesn’t need to be.
Step One: Pull Everything Out (10-15 Minutes) I pull out all the clothes. Every single thing. Then I create piles of different types:
Shorts Skirts Pants Dresses Jumpers PJs Undies Socks Long sleeve Short sleeve As I’m sorting, I take out anything that’s too small. This is the first cull — it happens naturally as you handle every piece.
Grab the Extras (Another 10 Minutes) Then I grab down last year’s “too big” pile and sort through any that will fit them now. Whoever I’m actually sorting for at the time, I go to the laundry and grab all their clothes and chuck them in the washing machine, ready to add to the pile once they’re clean.
Then I walk away.
I do all the other things that us parents need to do on a weekend. Have a coffee. Make snacks. Make lunch. Unpack the dishwasher. Put other people’s clothes away. Yell at my children to stop yelling.
Once the washing is done and dried, I add those clothes to the piles.
Step Two: The Quality Check (10 Minutes) Now I check over all the clothes that are left. Stains, rips, worn out, faded. I take out anything that needs to be binned or donated.
The stained ones? If I like them, or my kids really love them, I set them aside to give a proper clean later. (I’ll share my cleaning tips for stained clothes in a future post — stay tuned.)
Step Three: The Second Cull (10 Minutes) This is where I always get more brutal. I count how many they have of each item and make a decision about how many they actually need.
Do they really need 14 t-shirts? Probably not. Eight? That’ll do.
This second pass always surprises me — I find things I missed the first time, duplicates I didn’t notice, items that are technically fine but never get worn.
Now It’s Time to Put It All Back Time to fold and make sure the kids can actually see their clothes easily.
My daughter has nine drawers, and the hanging rod in her room is almost too high for me. So this part is about planning — where should everything go so it’s accessible to her and as user-friendly as possible?
If you’re like me and forever changing, evolving your spaces — this is the part where I empty the cupboard entirely and figure out the best configuration. If that’s not your thing, you can absolutely skip the rearranging and just fold everything back in neatly.
The Playroom Factor We have a playroom that’s sectioned pretty evenly between my daughter and son. Things that are mostly one or the other get stored in their rooms. For my daughter, that’s Barbies and her dolls.
Making Way for School Uniform My daughter is now in prep (cue the tears) so I need to make space for school uniform. My plan is to install another rod and hang all her dresses — that frees up drawer space for uniforms.
Her cupboard didn’t need a huge overhaul since I’d organised it not long ago. But her baby doll stuff? That had been annoying me. She knows to put them back in the bags, but we’d just been popping them next to her tallboy, and it was not pretty.
Working With What You’ve Got I pulled all her Barbie stuff out and grouped it together, then organised everything into different containers she can actually reach.
This is my biggest thing — if I can avoid spending money and utilise the things we already have, I always will. Sure, it might not always be Pinterest perfect, but everything has a home, and that means it can always go back neatly.
I organised all her hair accessories and “makeup” and made sure to put the non-slip material underneath — this stops her getting frustrated that she can’t open the drawer. Small detail, big difference.
I put all her baby doll things in the cupboard underneath the new rod for clothes. Out of the way, but still accessible for play.
The Fold and Put Away (30 Minutes) Ready to fold and put away! This took me about 30 minutes — folding and putting away every single piece of clothing, tucking all the “too big” items at the top of her cupboard for next time.
The Real Test Next is the real test. It’s the one where my daughter comes in and assesses my work.
Did I do okay? Will she approve? It is her room after all.
Lucky for me — she LOVED it. She instantly pulled out her step to grab some Barbies down and started playing. Started talking to her babies and feeding them.
That’s the moment that makes it worth it. When the system works for them, not just for you.
One Down, One to Go That’s organise number one done! Now to tackle the stained clothes, which is part of the daily to-do anyway.
Next week — my son’s room! Subscribe to get notified when it drops.
The Bonus: My Laundry Rearrange I ended up rearranging my laundry and linen closet too. Plot twist — I had no idea what to do with the shelf that was in Sophie’s closet, so I repurposed it in the laundry.
It needs a couple of tiny tweaks and then I’ll take some photos and share it properly. But here’s the gist of my laundry setup:
This is my base station. I keep my everyday cleaning supplies here, with the bigger stuff out in the garage. It’s my grab-and-go station — making life easier is the whole point.
A few things that work for me:
Kmart bucket strainer for soaking clothes — cheap and does the job Clear benchtop — when the laundry area is clear, I actually want to get laundry done and put away. Clutter breeds avoidance Double washing baskets — I have three sets, so laundry gets sorted the moment it comes in. They’re labelled so everyone knows where to put things: dark, light, white, black, towels, bedding Plants everywhere — the laundry gets the most humidity in the house, so my plants live in here and they’re thriving The dryer — I would genuinely not survive without it Photos coming soon once I’ve finished the final tweaks!
Need help with your post-holiday reset? Because laundry isn’t one task. It’s FIVE tasks disguised as one:
Collect dirty clothes Wash clothes Dry clothes Fold clothes Put away clothes Each step requires:
Remembering it exists Initiating the task Completing it before starting the next For ADHD brains with executive dysfunction, this is basically asking you to climb Mount Everest. Repeatedly. Forever.
I’m Jayne, a professional organiser in Geelong with ADHD. I’ve spent years figuring out laundry systems that work with ADHD brains, not against them.
Here’s what actually works.
Why You’re Not “Just Lazy” First, let’s kill the shame:
You’re not lazy. Your brain literally struggles with:
Task initiation: Starting the wash feels impossible Working memory: Forgetting clothes are in the machine for 3 days Task completion: Getting stuck at the “folding” stage indefinitely Sequential processing: Struggling to complete steps in order Traditional laundry advice assumes your brain can:
Remember to move wet clothes to the dryer Fold immediately after drying Put things away in designated drawers ADHD brains can’t consistently do this. And that’s a neurological reality, not a character flaw.
The ADHD Laundry Truths Let’s acknowledge reality:
Truth #1: The Laundry Mountain Will Happen Accept this. Plan for it. Stop fighting it.
Truth #2: “Folding Immediately” Is a Neurotypical Fantasy If you can do this, great. Most ADHD brains can’t.
Truth #3: The Floordrobe Is Real Clothes end up on the floor/chair/bed. That’s ADHD life.
Truth #4: Clean vs. Dirty Gets Confusing “Have I worn this? Is it clean? I can’t remember.” Daily struggle.
Truth #5: You’ll Rewash Clean Laundry Because you forgot it was in there and now it smells musty.
These are ADHD realities. Your system needs to accommodate them, not shame you for them.
The ADHD Laundry System: Three Levels Choose the level that matches your current capacity. There’s no “right” level - just what works for you today.
Level 1: Survival Mode (Minimal Executive Function) Goal: Clean clothes exist when needed
The System:
One hamper for all dirty clothes (no sorting - sorting is executive function drain) Wash when you need something (not on a schedule) Dry in dryer or air-dry (whatever is easier) Don’t fold - live out of the clean basket Rewear from the clean basket until next wash ADHD Hacks:
Keep clean basket in bedroom (reduce steps) Use dryer sheets to refresh clothes if they’ve been sitting Embrace the “sniff test” for determining clean vs. dirty Why it works: Eliminates 2 of the 5 steps (folding and putting away). Reduces decision-making. Gets you functional.
When to use this: When you’re overwhelmed, in crisis, or just surviving.
Level 2: Functional Mode (Moderate Executive Function) Goal: Organised-ish clean clothes with minimal effort
The System:
Two hampers: Light/Dark (or all in one if that’s too much) Wash one load when you have capacity (or set phone reminder) Dry immediately (or set alarm for when washer finishes) Minimal folding: Hang or fold basics only Sorting baskets: One basket per person or room ADHD Hacks:
Set loud alarm for when washing finishes (you WILL forget) Hang essentials on coat hangers (shirts, dresses, work clothes) Throw everything else in person-specific baskets Put away when you get dressed (pull out clothes, put away clean ones) Why it works: Reduces folding to essentials. Visual sorting (baskets) instead of drawers. Builds in reminders for poor working memory.
When to use this: When you have moderate capacity and want some organisation.
Level 3: Optimal Mode (Good Executive Function Day) Goal: Traditional laundry system (for when your brain cooperates)
The System:
Sorted hampers: Separate colours/whites/delicates Scheduled wash days (e.g. Monday/Thursday) Immediate drying with reminders Fold as soon as dry Put away in designated drawers ADHD Hacks:
Link to existing routine (“Monday morning before work”) Visual timer for folding (20 minutes only, then stop) Body doubling (fold while watching TV or on phone to friend) Podcast/music to make folding less boring Why it works: You’re following “normal” advice because your brain has capacity for it today.
When to use this: Rare good brain days, or when you’ve had proper medication/sleep/low stress.
Important: Don’t feel guilty when you can’t maintain Level 3. Most ADHD brains operate at Level 1-2 most of the time. That’s normal.
The Systems That Make It Easier System 1: The Hamper Hack Problem: Dirty clothes end up on the floor Solution: Multiple hampers in “drop zones”
Place hampers where clothes naturally get removed:
Bedroom (getting dressed/undressed) Bathroom (post-shower) Laundry (if you make it that far) ADHD Hack: Use open baskets (no lids). Lids = extra step = clothes end up on the floor.
System 2: The Timer Rescue Problem: Forgetting clothes are in the machine Solution: Loud phone alarms
Set an alarm for:
When washing finishes (+30min) When dryer finishes (+60-90min) ADHD Hack: Use an obnoxious alarm tone you can’t ignore. Label it “GET THE WASHING NOW.”
System 3: The Visual Clean/Dirty System Problem: Can’t remember if clothes are clean or dirty Solution: Designated spaces with visual cues
Clean clothes: Basket on left side of room Dirty clothes: Hamper on right side The chair: (We all have the chair) = “clean enough to rewear” ADHD Hack: Use different coloured baskets. Visual distinction = easier for ADHD brains to process.
System 4: The “Good Enough” Folding Problem: Folding is boring and you abandon it halfway Solution: Redefine “folded”
T-shirts: Fold once, throw in basket (not perfect, just vaguely flat) Pants: Fold in half, done Underwear/socks: Don’t fold at all, throw in basket Towels: Fold once (they don’t need to be perfect) Why it works: Reduces folding from 10 minutes to 3 minutes. “Good enough” is sustainable. Perfect isn’t.
System 5: The Laundry Mountain Reset When the system collapses (because it will):
Step 1: Acknowledge Reality “I have a laundry mountain. This is ADHD, not failure.”
Step 2: Sort Clean vs. Dirty Sniff test or rewash everything. Whatever is easier for your brain.
Step 3: Do ONE Load Just one. Start small.
Step 4: Get Help If Needed
Book a professional organiser (like me!) Ask for body doubling from a friend Pay someone to fold (ADHD tax - it’s worth it) Step 5: Return to Level 1 Don’t try to jump back to Level 3. Survive first, optimise later.
ADHD Laundry Tools That Help Essentials:
Multiple hampers (reduce steps to put dirty clothes away) Phone with loud alarms (rescue working memory) Dryer (eliminates air-drying decision paralysis) - ADHD tax worth it Baskets for clean clothes (if you’re not folding/putting away) Optional but Helpful:
Mesh laundry bags (for delicates - keeps them contained) Sock clips (clip pairs together before washing - never lose socks) Stain remover stick (keep near hamper for immediate treatment) Coat hangers (easy no-fold option for key items) When the “Floordrobe” Wins Some ADHD brains can’t maintain any laundry system. That’s okay.
Alternative approaches:
The Capsule Wardrobe Own fewer clothes. Wash more often. Less laundry volume = more manageable.
The Service Solution Pay for laundry service. Seriously. If you can afford it, outsource this task.
The Minimalist Approach Wear the same 5 outfits on rotation. Embrace simplicity.
The Body Doubling Hack Wash/fold/put away while video-calling a friend. Their presence helps your brain engage.
Real Talk: What This System Won’t Do This system won’t:
Make you love doing laundry Eliminate the laundry mountain forever Work perfectly every single week Turn you into someone who folds immediately This system will:
Give you clean clothes when you need them Reduce the shame and overwhelm Work with your ADHD brain instead of fighting it Be sustainable on bad brain days The Geelong Factor Living in Geelong adds extra laundry challenges:
Beach sand in everything (sandy towels = constant washing) Humidity in summer (clothes smell if left damp) Outdoor lifestyle (active kids = more laundry volume) Limited indoor drying (weather-dependent washing) Your system needs to work with Geelong’s coastal lifestyle, not fight it.
When to Get Professional Help Consider calling a professional organiser if:
Laundry has been overwhelming for months You’re rewearing dirty clothes because clean ones are inaccessible The laundry mountain is affecting your mental health You’ve tried systems and nothing sticks You just need someone to reset it Getting help is not failure. It’s accommodating your neurodivergence.
Try This Tomorrow Don’t overhaul everything. Just try this:
Tomorrow:
Put ONE load of washing on Set a loud alarm for when it finishes Move it to the dryer or hang it up Don’t fold - just live out of the basket this week That’s it. Build from there when you have capacity.
Final Thoughts Laundry is objectively the worst. It’s repetitive, multi-step, and never-ending.
ADHD brains are wired to seek novelty and struggle with mundane repetitive tasks. You’re not broken. The task is genuinely hard for your brain.
Find the system that keeps you in clean clothes with minimal shame. Level 1 is enough. Level 2 is great. Level 3 is a bonus, not the goal.
And remember: Clean clothes exist > perfectly folded clothes.
Struggling with laundry systems in your Geelong home? Your in-laws are coming tomorrow. Your house looks like a crime scene.
Cue the panic spiral:
“How did I let it get this bad?” “Where do I even start?” “Should I just cancel?” “Can I clean the entire house before they arrive?” Stop. Breathe. You’ve got this.
I’m Jayne, a professional organiser in Geelong with ADHD. I’ve been in this exact situation dozens of times - both personally and helping clients.
Here’s the emergency cleaning plan that actually works for ADHD brains.
The ADHD Guest-Panic Reality Let’s acknowledge what’s happening in your brain right now:
Executive dysfunction says: “Start cleaning!” while simultaneously providing zero ability to actually start.
Perfectionism says: “It all has to be perfect or they’ll judge you.”
All-or-nothing thinking says: “If I can’t deep-clean everything, what’s the point?”
Shame says: “How did I let it get this bad?”
Time blindness says: “I have time to clean everything!” (Narrator: she did not have time to clean everything.)
Here’s the truth: You cannot deep-clean your entire house in 24 hours while also having a functioning brain.
But you CAN make your house look presentable with strategic, ADHD-friendly prioritisation.
The Emergency Cleaning Priority System Forget deep-cleaning. We’re going for “looks clean enough to not cause concern.”
Priority Level 1: The Non-Negotiables (Do These First) These are the spaces guests WILL see and WILL judge:
1. Entry/Front Door Area (10 minutes)
Clear path from door to living area Shoes in ONE spot (basket, rack, or corner) Hang coats or pile on designated chair Quick sweep/vacuum of visible floor Why: First impressions matter. A clear entry says “organised enough.”
2. Living Room (20 minutes)
Surface clear: coffee table, TV unit, visible surfaces Cushions arranged on couch (doesn’t matter if not perfect) Floor clear of trip hazards Quick vacuum of visible areas (don’t move furniture) Why: This is where guests will spend most of their time.
3. Bathroom (15 minutes)
Toilet clean (this is THE priority in the bathroom) Sink wiped, mirror spot-cleaned Fresh hand towel out Bin emptied Floor swept/wiped if visibly dirty Why: A grotty bathroom is the fastest way to make guests uncomfortable.
4. Kitchen Surfaces (15 minutes)
Bench cleared and wiped Sink cleared (dishes in dishwasher or stacked neatly) Stovetop wiped (even if not deep-cleaned) Bin not overflowing Why: If you’re hosting, you’ll be in the kitchen. It needs to be functional.
Total Time: 60 minutes
If you can ONLY do these four things, you’re 80% there.
Priority Level 2: The “If You Have Time” Tasks (Optional) Only tackle these if Priority 1 is done:
5. Quick Bedroom Tidy (10 minutes)
Make bed (even if just pulling doona up) Clear floor of major mess Close wardrobe doors to hide chaos Why: Guests might glance in looking for bathroom.
6. Dining Area (10 minutes)
Clear table Wipe table surface Chairs pushed in Why: If you’re having a meal together, this needs to be usable.
7. Guest Loo Deep-Clean (10 minutes)
If you have a second bathroom, prioritise deep-cleaning the one guests use Leave the ensuite chaos for now Why: Guests will use this. Make it nice.
Total Extra Time: 30 minutes
Priority Level 3: The “Only If You’re Hyperfocusing” Tasks Do NOT start these unless Priority 1 and 2 are complete:
Deep cleaning oven Organising cupboards Washing windows Cleaning skirting boards Mopping hidden floor areas Decluttering spare room Why: These don’t affect guests’ experience. They’re perfectionism traps.
The “Clearing Sweep” Strategy Here’s the ADHD life-hack for fast tidying:
Step 1: Get ONE large basket/box/laundry basket
Step 2: Walk through each room
Step 3: Sweep everything that doesn’t belong into the basket
Random papers Kids’ toys Clothes Mail Miscellaneous chaos Step 4: Shove the basket somewhere guests won’t see
Your bedroom Laundry Spare room Car boot (seriously) Step 5: Deal with basket contents later (or never)
Why it works: Surfaces look clear. Guests are none the wiser. You haven’t spent hours deciding where each item goes.
Is it “cheating”? No. It’s executive function accommodation.
The “Smell Test” Hack Guests are coming in under 3 hours?
Forget deep-cleaning. Focus on SMELL and VISUAL cleanliness.
Quick smell fixes:
Empty all bins (smell source #1) Open windows for 10 minutes (air out stale smell) Light a candle or use air freshener in bathroom Run dishwasher or hand-wash dishes (rotting food smell = instant judgement) Quick visual fixes:
Clear surfaces (clearing sweep method) Close cupboard doors (hide internal chaos) Fluff couch cushions (instant “tidy” appearance) Make beds (even badly made beds look intentional) Why it works: Guests notice smell and surface mess. They don’t notice dust on skirting boards.
What to Do When You’re Completely Overwhelmed Option 1: The “Good Enough” Mindset Your house doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be functional and not actively dirty.
Mantra: “Good enough is good enough.”
Option 2: The Honesty Approach Text your guests: “Hey, fair warning - the house is a bit chaotic at the moment. Please excuse the mess!”
Most people respond with: “Don’t worry about it, we’re not fussy!” (And they mean it.)
Option 3: The Professional Rescue Call a cleaner for emergency same-day service.
Yes, it costs money. But if you’re in full panic mode and can afford it? Worth every dollar.
(I offer emergency cleaning for exactly this situation - call me!)
Option 4: The Pivot “Actually, let’s meet at a cafe instead.” Move the gathering to neutral territory.
There’s no shame in any of these options.
The 1-Hour Blitz Plan (Step by Step) If you have exactly 1 hour before guests arrive, do this:
Minutes 0-10: Entry + Living Room Surface Clear
Clearing sweep method Quick vacuum of living room floor Minutes 10-25: Bathroom Blitz
Toilet clean (priority #1) Wipe sink and mirror Fresh towel Empty bin Minutes 25-40: Kitchen Surfaces
Clear bench Quick wipe Dishes in dishwasher or neatly stacked Wipe stovetop Minutes 40-50: Final Visual Check
Walk through house as if you’re a guest Quick fixes to anything glaringly obvious Fluff couch cushions Arrange shoes at entry Minutes 50-60: Yourself
Change clothes if needed Quick freshen up Take 3 deep breaths Remind yourself: you did your best Done. Guests can arrive.
ADHD Brain Hacks for Emergency Cleaning 1. Set a Timer Don’t let hyperfocus trap you in perfectionism. 15 minutes per room. When timer goes off, STOP and move on.
2. Blast Music Upbeat music helps ADHD brains engage with boring tasks. Make a “cleaning panic” playlist.
3. Body Doubling Video call a friend while you clean. Their presence helps your brain stay on task.
4. Narrate What You’re Doing Talking out loud helps ADHD brains maintain focus. “Now I’m wiping the bench. Now I’m putting this in the bin.”
5. Reward Yourself After guests leave, treat yourself. You handled the panic. That’s an achievement.
What NOT to Do Don’t:
Start deep-cleaning the oven Reorganise cupboards “while you’re at it” Attempt to declutter the spare room Get stuck folding laundry Try to clean EVERYTHING Spiral into shame and abandon the task entirely These are perfectionism/ADHD traps. Avoid them.
The Geelong Context Geelong entertaining culture means:
Casual, laid-back expectations (most people aren’t judging) Outdoor entertaining = less focus on indoor mess Beach lifestyle = sand everywhere is normalised Community vibe = people are generally understanding Translation: Your Geelong guests probably care less about your mess than you think.
What to Do After Guests Leave Post-guest cleanup is HARD for ADHD brains. Here’s how to manage it:
Option 1: Leave It Deal with it tomorrow (or next week). You’re exhausted. It can wait.
Option 2: 10-Minute Tidy Just clear surfaces quickly. Leave deep-clean for later.
Option 3: Book a Cleaner Pre-book a cleaner for the day after. Remove the burden entirely.
Whatever you choose: be kind to yourself. Hosting is exhausting for ADHD brains.
When It’s More Than Just Mess If your house is consistently overwhelming and guests cause panic attacks:
This might be a sign you need ongoing support:
Regular cleaning service Professional organising to build sustainable systems ADHD coaching for household management Body doubling support There’s no shame in getting help. Neurodivergent brains need accommodations. That’s okay.
Final Pep Talk Your guests are coming to see YOU, not to inspect your skirting boards.
They want to spend time with you. They want connection, conversation, laughter.
They do NOT care if your bathroom grout isn’t spotless or your kitchen cupboards are chaotic.
Do the Priority 1 tasks. That’s enough.
And if it’s not enough? If they judge you? That says more about them than you.
You’re managing ADHD, a household, relationships, work, and life. The fact that you’re hosting at all is impressive.
Give yourself credit.
Need emergency cleaning support in Geelong? And traditional kitchen cleaning advice? It assumes your brain works in a linear, consistent way. Spoiler: it doesn’t.
I’m Jayne, a professional organiser in Geelong with ADHD. I’ve spent years figuring out what actually works for ADHD brains - not what should work, but what does work.
Here’s the kitchen system that changed everything for me and my clients.
Why Traditional Kitchen Systems Fail ADHD Brains Traditional advice says things like:
“Clean as you cook” “Do dishes immediately after eating” “Wipe down surfaces daily” “Deep clean the kitchen weekly” Why it doesn’t work:
Executive Dysfunction: Your brain literally cannot initiate the task, even though you want to.
Time Blindness: “Clean as you cook” requires tracking time while cooking. ADHD brains can’t do both.
Inconsistent Capacity: Some days you can manage it. Most days you can’t. The system needs to work on bad brain days.
Decision Fatigue: Too many small decisions (“should I do this now or later?”) drain your executive function reserves.
The ADHD-Friendly Kitchen System This system has three core principles:
1. Visible = Exists If you can’t see it, your brain forgets it exists. No “put things away in cupboards” rules.
2. Minimal Steps Every extra step is a chance for your brain to abandon the task. We eliminate unnecessary steps.
3. Good Enough > Perfect A reasonably clean kitchen you can maintain beats a spotless kitchen that collapses in 48 hours.
The System: Three Zones Divide your kitchen into three zones:
Zone 1: The Absolute Minimum (Daily) What: Sink, benchtop, stovetop Why: These three surfaces determine if your kitchen feels clean How long: 5-10 minutes
The Routine:
Clear sink (dishes in dishwasher or stack neatly to side) Wipe bench (spray and wipe, no decision-making) Wipe stovetop (quick wipe of visible mess) ADHD Hack: Use a brightly coloured spray bottle. Visual cue = easier to remember.
If you can ONLY do one thing: Clear the sink. A clear sink makes your brain feel like you’ve achieved something.
Zone 2: The Weekly Reset (Once a week) What: Floors, bin, fridge wipe-down Why: Prevents things from getting truly disgusting How long: 15-20 minutes
The Routine:
Take out bin (even if not full - eliminate the smell) Quick sweep/vacuum floor (visible dirt only) Wipe fridge shelves (not deep clean, just visible spills) Wipe down cupboard fronts if visibly dirty ADHD Hack: Anchor this to something you already do consistently. For me, it’s “Sunday before grocery shopping.” Link new habits to existing ones.
Zone 3: The Deep Clean (When you have capacity) What: Inside cupboards, oven, behind appliances Why: It needs doing eventually How long: Don’t set a time limit
The Reality: You won’t do this regularly. That’s okay. When you hyperfocus at midnight or have a rare burst of energy, tackle ONE deep task.
ADHD Hack: Keep a list visible of deep tasks. When hyperfocus strikes, you know exactly what to do instead of wandering aimlessly.
The Visual Systems That Make It Work 1. The Dirty Dish Station Problem: Dishes pile up in random locations Solution: Designate ONE spot for dirty dishes
Not in the sink (sink needs to stay clear for Zone 1) Next to the sink or on a specific bench section Use a tray or container if it helps contain the mess Why it works: Your brain knows exactly where dirty dishes go. No decisions = less executive function drain.
2. The “Clean Enough” Bench Problem: You want to use the bench, but it’s covered in stuff Solution: Embrace the “clearing sweep”
Keep a large basket/box near the kitchen. When you need bench space:
Sweep everything into the basket Deal with basket contents later (or never - we don’t judge) Why it works: You can cook immediately without the paralysis of “where do I put all this stuff?”
3. Visual Timers Problem: Time blindness means tasks take “forever” (even 5-minute ones) Solution: Use a visual timer
I use a Time Timer (the red disc one). Seeing time physically disappear helps ADHD brains engage.
Why it works: Your brain can see that this task is finite. It’s not an endless black hole of effort.
The “Good Enough” Rules These rules keep you from perfectionist paralysis:
Rule 1: Visible Clean > Actual Clean The sink looks clear? That’s a win. Doesn’t matter if there are crumbs in the cutlery drawer.
Rule 2: Some > None Wiped half the bench? That’s better than zero bench. Stop there if you need to.
Rule 3: Today’s Mess Can Wait If you cooked dinner and your brain is done, leave the dishes. They’ll still be there tomorrow. You kept yourself fed - that’s the priority.
Rule 4: Hyperfocus Is a Gift When midnight cleaning strikes, embrace it. Clean at 2am if that’s when your brain wants to do it.
What to Do When It All Falls Apart Because it will. ADHD life means the system collapses sometimes.
When your kitchen is completely overwhelming:
Step 1: Do ONE thing
Clear the sink, or Wipe the bench, or Take out the bin Pick the easiest one. Just one.
Step 2: Leave it You did something. That’s enough.
Step 3: Reset when you can When you have capacity (or can afford it), get help:
Book a professional cleaner (like me!) Ask a friend for body doubling support Tackle it in a hyperfocus burst The system isn’t working? Change the system. There’s no shame in admitting what you set up isn’t sustainable.
ADHD Kitchen Tools That Help Essentials:
All-purpose spray cleaner (one product = less decision fatigue) Paper towel (or dedicated cleaning cloths - whatever you’ll actually use) Large basket for clearing surfaces Dishwasher if possible (ADHD tax: it’s worth it) Optional but Helpful:
Visual timer (Time Timer or phone app) Coloured spray bottles (visual cue to remember to use them) Open storage (clear containers, visible shelves) Dish rack (if no dishwasher - stack dishes neatly to dry) Real Talk: What This System Won’t Do This system won’t:
Make your kitchen permanently spotless Cure your ADHD Work perfectly every single day Eliminate the shame entirely (but it helps) This system will:
Give you a baseline when things feel out of control Reduce the “where do I even start?” paralysis Create sustainable habits that work with ADHD Make your kitchen functional, not perfect The Geelong Context Living in Geelong means:
Beach sand ends up EVERYWHERE (including your kitchen) Summer humidity makes bins smell faster Open-plan living means kitchen mess is visible from the lounge Entertaining culture = kitchen is social hub These are real challenges. Your system needs to accommodate Geelong life, not fight it.
When to Get Help Some signs it’s time to call a professional organiser (like me):
The kitchen has been overwhelming for months You’re avoiding cooking because of the mess You’ve tried multiple systems and nothing sticks Executive dysfunction is winning every day You just need someone to reset it so you can start fresh There’s no shame in getting help. ADHD brains need external support sometimes. That’s neurodiversity, not failure.
Try This Tomorrow Don’t overhaul your whole kitchen. Just try this:
Tomorrow morning:
Clear your sink completely (5 minutes max) Wipe your main bench section Notice how it feels to have a clear workspace That’s it. Build from there.
Final Thoughts Your kitchen doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. It just has to work for your brain.
Traditional systems are designed for neurotypical brains with consistent executive function. You don’t have that - and that’s okay.
Find the system that works for you. Adapt it. Change it. Throw it out and start over. I’ve got honest answers. No judgment, just real information to help you decide if I’m the right fit.
About Services What do you actually do? I offer cleaning and organising support for people who need it. Regular house cleaning (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly), deep cleans when things have gotten overwhelming, decluttering and organising help, and NDIS household support. Whatever you need, we can probably make it work.
Do I need to tidy before you come? Not at all. I know that sounds backwards, but it’s actually the whole point of what I do. I include tidying and organising as part of the clean. If your house is chaotic right now, that’s completely okay - that’s exactly when you need help most.
What if I’m embarrassed about the state of my house? I really do understand that feeling. But I promise there’s no need to be embarrassed. I have ADHD myself, and I’ve been in that exact same spot. I’ve seen homes in all states, and honestly, nothing shocks me. I’m just here to help, not to judge. Your home situation doesn’t change how I see you as a person.
What’s included in a regular clean? I clean everything - vacuuming, mopping, bathrooms, kitchen, dusting. But the key difference is I also tidy as I go. I’ll pick things up and put them away (in logical spots), which is something most cleaning services don’t do. That’s what makes it manageable for people with ADHD or anyone who struggles with executive function.
Do you bring your own cleaning products? Yes, I bring everything I need. But if you have specific products you’d prefer I use - maybe for sensitive skin, allergies, or eco-friendly reasons - just let me know and I’m happy to use whatever you have.
Will it be the same person every time? Yes, it’s just me. You won’t get a rotating team of different people. It’s always me, which means I get to know your home and how you like things done. Consistency really helps, especially for neurodivergent folks who struggle with change.
Pricing & Booking How much does it cost? Regular cleaning starts at $120 for a 2-bedroom home. Deep cleans start at $350. Organising projects start at $350. NDIS rates are set by the NDIA (household tasks at $58.03/hour, capacity building at $77/hour). For an exact quote based on your specific situation, just give me a call at 0481 852 903 and we’ll chat about what you need.
How do I book? You can call me (0481 852 903), text me (same number), email me ([email protected]), or fill out the contact form on the website. I’ll get back to you within 24 hours, usually much sooner. We’ll have a quick chat about what you need and find a time that works.
Can I cancel or reschedule? Absolutely. Life happens, especially with ADHD and chronic health stuff. If you can give me 24 hours notice, that’s ideal, but if it’s an emergency I completely understand. I’m not going to charge cancellation fees for genuine emergencies - I’ve been there myself.
Do you have a minimum charge? Regular cleans are usually 2-3 hours minimum (starting at $120), because that’s generally how long it takes to do a thorough job. Deep cleans and organising sessions are usually 3-4 hours minimum. But we can chat about what makes sense for your specific situation - I’m flexible.
Do you offer any discounts? I offer discounts for regular ongoing clients (weekly or fortnightly), pensioners, and NDIS participants (through the standard NDIS pricing structure). Sometimes I also offer first-time client discounts. Just ask when you book and I’ll let you know what’s available.
NDIS Services Are you NDIS registered? Yes, I’m NDIS registered for both household tasks and capacity building. My worker screening is all complete. If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, I can help you with household support.
What’s covered under NDIS? Household tasks (like cleaning, organising, and decluttering) and capacity building (where I work with you to teach organising systems and build skills). These usually come from your core supports or capacity building budget, depending on how your plan is set up.
How does NDIS pricing work? The NDIS sets the rates - it’s not something I control. Household tasks are $58.03 per hour on weekdays. Capacity building is $77 per hour. If you’re self-managed, you pay me directly and claim it through your NDIS plan. If you’re plan-managed, your plan manager handles the payment to me.
Do I need to be plan-managed to use NDIS services? No, self-managed works perfectly fine too. Actually, self-managed can be simpler - you pay me, then claim it through your NDIS portal. But I’m happy to work with plan managers if that’s what you have set up.
What’s the difference between household tasks and capacity building? Household tasks means I do the work - cleaning, organising, decluttering your space. Capacity building means I work alongside you, teaching you systems and helping you build skills so you can maintain things yourself. Both are really valuable, and most people benefit from a combination of both approaches.
Service Areas Where do you service? I cover all of Geelong and the surrounding areas - inner Geelong suburbs like Newtown and Highton, Bellarine Peninsula (Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads), Surf Coast (Torquay, Anglesea), and growth areas like Armstrong Creek. If you’re in the Greater Geelong region, I can probably help.
Do you charge travel fees? Not for most Geelong suburbs. If you’re further out - like Lorne or Queenscliff - there might be a small travel fee, but for the majority of my clients in the Geelong area, there’s no extra charge for travel.
How far will you travel? I generally travel about 30-40 minutes from central Geelong. So that covers all of Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, and the Surf Coast up to around Torquay/Anglesea. If you’re not sure whether I service your area, just reach out and ask - I’m happy to let you know.
ADHD & Neurodivergent Support Do you really have ADHD? Yes, I really do. I’m not using it as a marketing angle - I genuinely live with ADHD every single day. My family is neurodivergent too. I understand the executive dysfunction, the overwhelm, the shame that comes with struggling to keep your home manageable. That lived experience is exactly why I created this business.
What makes your service “ADHD-friendly”? I work differently than traditional cleaners and organisers. I understand when tasks feel impossible to start. I work at your pace without pressure. I create systems that work for your brain, not against it. And I offer things like body doubling, which is specifically helpful for ADHD brains. Most importantly, there’s absolutely no judgment about the state of your home.
What’s body doubling? Body doubling is when someone is physically present with you while you work on a task. It sounds simple, but for ADHD brains, having another person there helps you actually start and stay focused on the task. I can be your body double - you do the organising or cleaning, and I’m just there providing that grounding presence that helps your brain cooperate.
Can you help with executive dysfunction? Yes, that’s really at the heart of what I do. Executive dysfunction is when your brain struggles to initiate or complete tasks, even though you genuinely want to. I help by breaking things into tiny manageable steps, being physically present (body doubling), and removing the decision overwhelm that makes starting feel impossible.
I’m autistic, not ADHD. Can you still help? Absolutely. The support I offer works well for autistic people too. I’m flexible, patient, and respectful of different needs - including sensory considerations. I work at whatever pace feels comfortable for you. Many of the systems I create work really well for autistic brains as well as ADHD brains.
What if I get emotional or overwhelmed while you’re here? That’s completely okay and honestly quite common. This work can bring up a lot of feelings. If you need to take a break, cry, or just step away for a bit, we absolutely can. I’ve had many clients become emotional during sessions. It’s a natural response to overwhelm, and there’s zero judgment about it.
General Questions Are you insured? Yes, I’m fully insured with public liability insurance. I’m also police checked and have my Working With Children Check (WWCC). All the proper credentials are in place.
Do you work weekends? Sometimes, depending on my schedule. If you need weekend appointments, just ask and I’ll let you know if I can make it work. I try to be as flexible as possible.
What if I’m not home during the clean? That’s totally fine - most of my regular clients aren’t home. You can leave a key in a lockbox, hide it somewhere, or I can pick it up before the first appointment. Whatever feels most comfortable and secure for you.
Can you help with hoarding situations? I can, yes, but it requires a gentle, patient approach. I would never push you to get rid of things you’re not ready to part with. We’d work at your pace, with compassion and understanding. For more severe hoarding, I might also recommend working with a psychologist who specialises in this area, alongside my practical support.
What if I just want someone there while I clean, not to do it for me? That’s exactly what body doubling is! It’s a specific service I offer. You do the work yourself, and I’m there to help your brain stay on track. Many people find this incredibly helpful, especially with ADHD. It’s $80 per hour.
Still Have Questions? Can't find what you're looking for? And if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably seen all those “transform your entire home in January!” posts and felt… overwhelmed.
Here’s the thing: those grand organising overhauls rarely work for ADHD brains.
Instead, I want to share 5 small, achievable organising goals for 2026 that are designed to work with your brain, not against it.
1. Create One “Drop Zone” That Actually Works You know that spot where everything lands when you walk in the door? Keys, wallet, random receipts, that thing you’ve been meaning to return?
The Goal: Turn that chaos into a functional drop zone.
How to Make It ADHD-Friendly:
Use a tray or basket (visual boundary = brain loves it) Keep it BY the door (not hidden in a cupboard you’ll never open) Make it simple: keys go here, wallet goes there Accept that it will get messy-that’s okay! Reset it weekly, not daily Why This Works: Your brain already decided this is where things live. Fighting it creates friction. Work with your brain’s existing pattern.
2. Implement the “One Drawer” Rule Pick ONE drawer in your house. Just one.
The Goal: Keep this drawer organised all year.
How:
Choose a drawer you use daily (bathroom, kitchen, desk) Use dividers (seriously-visual sections are ADHD gold) Only put things you actually use in it Set a monthly 5-minute reset reminder Why This Works: One success builds confidence. Plus, every time you open this drawer, you’ll get a tiny dopamine hit of “I did that and it’s still working!”
3. Create a “Donation Box” System Decluttering is hard when you have to make 47 decisions about each item. The donation box removes decision paralysis.
The Goal: Always have a donation box ready to go.
How:
Keep a box in your wardrobe or laundry When something doesn’t fit/work/spark joy, toss it in immediately When box is full, seal it and put it in your car Next time you drive past an op shop, drop it off Why This Works: You’re lowering the “activation energy” required to declutter. See item, feel meh about it, toss in box. Done. No big decluttering sessions needed.
4. The “Touch It Once” Rule (But Make It Realistic) You’ve probably heard “touch it once”-handle mail once, file it immediately, etc. That’s… not realistic for ADHD brains.
The Better Goal: Touch it TWICE (max).
How:
First touch: Sort into categories (bills/junk/important) Second touch: Deal with it (pay/bin/file) Use three trays/baskets for the sorting step Schedule one weekly session to do the “dealing with it” part Why This Works: It’s the same principle, but with realistic ADHD accommodations built in.
5. Build One Tiny Maintenance Habit Grand cleaning schedules don’t work for us. But tiny habits? Those can stick.
The Goal: Pick ONE tiny reset habit to do daily.
Examples:
Clear kitchen sink before bed Put clothes in hamper (not on the floor) 10-minute living room pickup before TV time Dishes straight into dishwasher (not into sink) How:
Attach it to something you already do (habit stacking) Set a timer for accountability Don’t add a second habit until this one is automatic Give yourself grace on bad brain days Why This Works: One small habit, repeated consistently, prevents the giant overwhelm that triggers shutdown.
The Real Secret to ADHD-Friendly Organising Notice what all these goals have in common?
They’re small (not overwhelming) They’re visual (your brain can see them) They’re simple (minimal steps) They’re realistic (designed for real ADHD life) You don’t need to transform your entire home in 2026. You just need to make it work a little bit better than it did in 2025.
Which One Will You Start With? Pick just ONE of these goals. Not all five. One.
Try it for January. See how it feels. Adjust it to work for YOUR brain and YOUR life.
And if you need support getting started? That’s literally what I do. No judgement, just practical help to make your home work for you.
Need help creating organising systems that actually work for your ADHD brain? Do you get overwhelmed before you even start? Does the guilt about your “messy” home weigh on you constantly?
I get it. Traditional cleaning services show up, clean, and leave. That’s great if you can maintain things between visits. But if you have ADHD, you know it’s not that simple.
ADHD-friendly cleaning means:
Body Doubling Sometimes you CAN clean - you just can’t START. Watch the videos. Buy the cute matching baskets. Follow the step-by-step systems. And within a week (sometimes days), it would all fall apart.
The problem wasn’t me. The problem was that traditional organising advice is designed for neurotypical brains.
Let me show you why it doesn’t work for ADHD-and more importantly, what to do instead.
Problem #1: “Put Everything Away Where It Belongs” Why It Fails:
Assumes you’ll remember where things “belong” Requires consistent executive function (which ADHD brains don’t have) Relies on motivation and willpower “Away” usually means “out of sight, out of mind” What to Do Instead: Make things visible.
Your ADHD brain operates on “out of sight, out of existence.” If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.
Use open shelving instead of closed cupboards Clear containers instead of opaque boxes Labels with pictures, not just words Everything in its “home” should be visible at a glance Example: Instead of filing paperwork in a drawer, use a vertical file holder on your desk where you can SEE each category.
Problem #2: “Just Do a Big Deep Clean Every Fortnight” Why It Fails:
Letting everything pile up for two weeks creates overwhelming visual clutter ADHD brains shut down when the mess gets too big — and two weeks is a LOT of mess A massive clean once a fortnight takes hours and drains all your energy You spend the whole time catching up instead of maintaining What to Do Instead: Small, daily habits and a weekly clean.
I know, I know — routine and ADHD aren’t always best mates. But hear me out. Routine is actually one of the most powerful tools we have. The trick is building the right routine — one that’s short, repeatable, and becomes automatic.
I tidy twice a day. Morning and evening. It’s not a big production — it’s a quick reset. Put things back where they belong, clear the benches, stay on top of the dishes. That’s it.
Then once a week, I clean properly. Bathrooms, floors, kitchen. It doesn’t take long because I’ve been maintaining all week.
Tidy twice a day — 10 minutes, tops Clean once a week — because you’ve kept on top of things, this is manageable Organisation is what makes it all possible — when everything has a home, tidying is fast The routine becomes muscle memory over time, which is ADHD gold Example: Instead of “massive deep clean every second Saturday,” try “quick morning tidy, quick evening tidy, proper clean day once a week.” It sounds like more, but it’s actually far less overwhelming.
Problem #3: “Minimalism Is the Answer” Why It Fails:
ADHD brains often need OPTIONS We forget what we own if we can’t see it Hobbies and interests shift-we need supplies for all of them “Just in case” anxiety is real with ADHD What to Do Instead: Organise what you have, don’t force yourself to own less.
You don’t need to be a minimalist. You just need to be able to FIND things.
Keep what brings you joy or serves you Focus on organisation, not elimination Create systems for rotating hobbies/interests Accept that your brain needs variety Example: Instead of “get rid of 90% of your craft supplies,” try “organise supplies by project type in clear, labelled containers.”
Problem #4: “You Can’t Do Routine With ADHD” Why This Myth Is Harmful:
It tells ADHD brains to give up before they start It assumes routine has to be rigid and complicated It ignores that routine is actually one of the best things for ADHD It confuses “hard to build” with “impossible” The Truth: Routine is everything. But the routine has to be realistic.
Yes, building a routine with ADHD is harder. Starting is the hard part. But once a routine clicks — once it becomes habit — it’s actually easier for our brains than making decisions every single day about what to clean and when.
The key is keeping it simple enough that it becomes automatic. I don’t think about whether I should tidy in the morning. I just do it. It’s not willpower — it’s muscle memory.
Start with ONE habit (a morning tidy, an evening reset) Keep it short — if it takes more than 10 minutes, it’s too much to start with Same time, same place, every day — this is how it becomes automatic Organisation is the foundation — you can’t maintain a tidy routine if nothing has a home Give yourself grace on bad days, but get back to it the next day Example: Instead of “I can’t do routines because ADHD,” try “morning tidy at 7:30, evening reset at 8pm — 10 minutes each, non-negotiable until it’s habit.”
Problem #5: “File It Properly in a Logical System” Why It Fails:
Your brain’s logic ≠ traditional filing logic Searching for “where would someone put this?” uses too much brain power Alphabetical/colour-coded systems require sustained organisation You’ll forget the system you created What to Do Instead: Organise based on YOUR brain’s associations.
Your system doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else. It just needs to work for YOU.
Use “weird” categories that match how YOU think Group things based on WHEN you use them, not what they are Label based on your first thought (“that drawer,” “kitchen stuff”) Take photos of organised spaces to remember the system Example: Instead of alphabetical file folders, try “Bills I Need to Pay,” “Stuff for Tax Time,” “Important Papers I Can’t Lose.”
Problem #6: “Just Focus and Get It Done” Why It Fails:
Executive dysfunction isn’t a choice “Just focus” isn’t helpful advice Starting is often harder than doing Overwhelm triggers shutdown What to Do Instead: Lower the barrier to starting.
The hardest part is beginning. Make it as easy as possible.
Break tasks into absurdly small steps Use body doubling (someone working nearby) Set stupidly short timers (5 minutes) Remove as many steps as possible Example: Instead of “clean the kitchen,” try “put 5 things away” or “clear the sink only.”
The Bottom Line Traditional organising advice often gets it wrong for ADHD brains by assuming:
Consistent executive function every single day Reliable motivation and willpower Strong working memory That big infrequent cleans are enough “Out of sight, out of mind” is fine But the answer isn’t to throw routine out the window. It’s to build the RIGHT routine.
What actually works:
Organisation first — everything needs a home, or no system will stick Daily tidying — small, quick resets that prevent the overwhelm from building Weekly cleaning — manageable because you’ve been maintaining all week Visual systems — open shelves, clear containers, labels Realistic expectations — grace on bad days, consistency over perfection Your Next Step If you’ve been trying traditional organising methods and feeling like a failure-you’re not failing. The system is failing you.
You don’t need to try harder. You need strategies designed for how your brain actually works.
That’s exactly what I do. I help ADHD brains (and anyone with executive function challenges) create systems that actually stick-without the shame, without the pressure, without the “you just need to try harder” nonsense.
Ready for organising advice that actually gets it? Dishes pile up. Laundry breeds on the bedroom floor. Surfaces disappear under random stuff.
For years, I’d swing between two extremes:
Ignoring it completely (out of sight, out of mind) Spending 5 hours in a hyperfocus cleaning frenzy Neither was sustainable.
Then I discovered something that actually works for my ADHD brain: the 10-minute reset.
Not a full clean. No “just one more thing” rabbit holes.
The 10-Minute Reset Routine Here’s the exact routine I use (and recommend to clients):
Step 1: Set the Timer (30 seconds) Seriously. Do this first.
Use your phone timer Set it for 10 minutes Press start Why first? Because if you don’t, you’ll forget and end up either quitting after 2 minutes or spending an hour cleaning.
Step 2: The Rubbish Run (2 minutes) Grab a bin bag (or just the bin).
Walk through your main living spaces and grab:
Obvious rubbish Empty cups/glasses Food wrappers Random packaging ADHD tip: Don’t sort. Don’t make decisions. If it’s trash, grab it. Keep moving.
Step 3: The Dish Dash (3 minutes) Every dish/cup/bowl goes:
Into the dishwasher, OR Into the sink to soak, OR On the bench near the sink ADHD tip: Don’t wash them now. Just gather them. Put coffee cups in the dishwasher unwashed if needed-it’ll be fine.
Step 4: The Surface Sweep (3 minutes) Pick 2-3 surfaces (kitchen bench, coffee table, bedside table).
Everything on those surfaces gets:
Put away if it takes 5 seconds, OR Tossed into a “deal with it later” basket, OR Left there if it actually belongs there ADHD tip: The basket is key. Don’t try to put away everything properly-just get it OFF the surface. You can sort the basket another day (or never, let’s be real).
Step 5: The Quick Floor Fix (90 seconds) Just the main walkways:
Kick clothes toward the hamper/bedroom Pick up anything trip-hazardous Don’t vacuum-just clear the path ADHD tip: This is about safety and visual calm, not perfection.
Step 6: STOP When the Timer Goes Off (required) When that timer beeps: stop.
Even if you’re on a roll. Even if “just one more thing” is calling.
Stop.
Why? Because your brain needs to learn that this is a short, manageable task-not another opportunity for all-or-nothing thinking.
What This Reset ISN’T Let me be clear about what this routine doesn’t do:
❌ It’s not a deep clean ❌ It won’t organise your whole house ❌ It’s not a substitute for actual cleaning ❌ It won’t fix underlying clutter issues
What This Reset IS ✅ A way to bring your space from “overwhelm” to “functional” ✅ A quick dopamine hit (“look what I did in 10 minutes!”) ✅ Prevention against total chaos ✅ A sustainable habit you can actually maintain
When to Use the 10-Minute Reset I use this routine:
Daily (when my brain allows it):
Before bed Before starting work When I walk in the door and my space feels chaotic Strategically:
Before guests come over (then close bedroom doors on the chaos) When I’m feeling overwhelmed and need quick control When I’ve been avoiding cleaning and need to just START Not on bad brain days:
When I’m burnt out When executive function is at zero When my body says no And that’s okay. This isn’t about perfection-it’s about having a tool that works when you CAN use it.
Customise It for YOUR Brain My version might not work for you. And that’s fine!
Adjust based on what your space needs:
If you live alone:
Focus more on dishes/kitchen Less on shared spaces If you have kids:
Add a toy-sweep step Reduce surface-clearing time If you work from home:
Focus on desk/workspace Add a “close 5 browser tabs” step (digital reset!) If you have mobility issues:
Use a grabber tool Focus on one room instead of whole house Sit down while you sort The goal is functional, not perfect.
The Secret Ingredient: Self-Compassion Here’s what makes this routine actually sustainable:
Some days you’ll do it. Some days you won’t. Both are okay.
This isn’t about “building discipline” or “being more consistent” or any of that neurotypical nonsense.
It’s about having a tool in your toolbox for when you need it.
On good brain days: use it. On bad brain days: don’t.
No shame, no guilt, no “I should be better at this.”
Try It Right Now Seriously-if your space is feeling chaotic, try this right now:
Set a timer for 10 minutes Follow the steps Stop when the timer beeps Notice how you feel I bet you’ll be surprised at the difference 10 minutes makes.
Need More Than a 10-Minute Reset? If your space has gone beyond “quick reset” territory and you’re feeling totally overwhelmed-that’s what I’m here for.
No judgement. No “you should have done this sooner.” Just compassionate, practical help to get your home to a place that feels manageable.
Ready for support that actually gets ADHD? I started Calm Spaces because I believe everyone deserves to feel calm and functional in their home - not chaotic and overwhelmed.
For years, I struggled with keeping my space organised. The clutter would build up, the cleaning would fall behind, and I'd feel that familiar weight of shame and stress. I tried all the "normal" cleaning advice - Marie Kondo, the FlyLady, every productivity hack - but nothing stuck.
Then I realised: I wasn't failing. The systems were failing me.
Once I understood my ADHD brain and learned to work with it instead of against it, everything changed. I developed systems that actually work for how my brain functions. And I thought - if this helped me, it can help others too.
This isn't about creating magazine-perfect homes. It's about creating functional spaces that work for real life. Check out our blog for practical ADHD-friendly organising tips, or visit our FAQ page if you have questions.
My Approach No Judgement, Ever Your home is overwhelming? You haven't cleaned in weeks (or months)? You can't figure out where to start? I've been there. There is absolutely zero judgement here.
ADHD-Informed Methods Whether you have ADHD or not, I use strategies that work with how brains actually function - not against them. We focus on simple systems that are easy to maintain, visual organisation that makes sense, realistic routines (not Pinterest-perfect fantasies), and removing barriers, not adding rules. Learn more about ADHD-friendly cleaning.
Collaborative, Not Prescriptive This is your home. I'm here to help you create systems that work for your life, not impose some one-size-fits-all solution.
