Dictionary & Milestones of a 19-month-old

17 Mar

Louis is a very active little guy who likes to run and jump around, exploring things that he sees, making a mess of stuff he is curious about.

Now 19 months and 12 days old, Louis still cannot talk with real words, but he does talk a lot. I was starting to worry, but the pediatrician and everyone tells me it’s just because he is a boy and boys tend to talk later than girls, and secondly because he is exposed to 3 languages at the same time: Indonesian, French and English.

So, naturally he will take more time to learn everything but it’ll come. His cousins all speak perfect English and French and one even understands Russian (his daddy is Letvian).

Louis 19mo

Milestones

– When we say “Satu, dua, tiiiiiiiii…” he replies “Gaaaaaaaa!” (One, two, three in Indonesian is Satu, dua, tiga)

– Gives high-fives to everyone he likes

– Says good-bye, waving hands and kiss-bye-ing to everyone before leaving

– Sleeps through the night but I still have to wake up to change his nappies

– Eats with spoon and hands

– He is apparently a lefty like his papa (takes everything with left hand)

– Eats mostly with left hand except at school, because everyone eats with right hand at school

– Doesn’t cry anymore before school

– Likes to play and share with his little friends at school

– Understands whatever we say and can say “Nggaaaaaaaaaa” when he doesn’t like something

– Loves Thomas and everything about Thomas

– Likes his carseat now

– Listens and obeys to mama and papa but not to Oma and Aunt/Mama Ida

– Lullabies change from Rock-a-bye Baby to Fais Dodo Colas Mon Petit Frère (that must be changed to Fais Dodo Louis Mon Petit Bébé and some more alternative lyrics) to Nina Bobo (changed to Louis Bobo) and since a few days, it’s Thomas & Friends Theme Song *sigh*

– Starting to have supermarket tantrums!

– Loves salty stuff more than sweets

– Loves breads – whenever we go to the supermarket or restaurants and he sees bread (loaf bread, baguette, Brötchen, whatever as long as it’s bread), he’ll ask to have a piece of the bread right here right now (and tantrums if we say no!)

– Loves watermelons – he literally cries asking for a piece of the fruit whenever he sees watermelons in the supermarket or in restaurants!

– Can eat very well now – early to mid February he still couldn’t chew food (he chews other things but food) and sometimes choked when given a piece of food to big, but now he munches like a pro!

– Loves his shoes – literally all his shoes and he has a favorite shoepair of the day: when he picks one pair then he’ll want to put them all the time even for baths and naps!

– Starts to dance (well, moving his body frantically) whenever he hears songs he likes, in the supermarket, in the malls, in the restaurants…as well as his favorite cartoons’ theme songs

– Smiles a big wide grin whenever he hears Gaspard and Lisa saying “Hello, bonjour!”

– Comes around to you and tilts his head to your neck whenever we say “Câlin, Louis, câlin!” (Hugs, Louis, Hugs)

– Kisses you with a loud “mmmwah” sound when you say “Bisous, Louis!” (Kiss, Louis)

– Shakes his head and taps you with his hands when he doesn’t want something

– Likes Kiri cheese

– And many more! He’s growing so fast before our eyes!

The Louis Dico

– Menyem menyem = minum (Indonesian for drink)

– Thethehh = Thomas, or Thomas theme song, or whatever that has something to do with Thomas

– Kloklooo = Trotro

– Mama = mama

– Apa = papa

– Mamamama (more than 2 syllables of ma) = can literally mean anything

– Bébéééé (other baby / babies or toddlers or himself)

– Kukuk = krupuk (Indonesian chips)

– Kah = ikan (Indonesian for fish)

– Kaka = caca

– Oma = oma

– And many more syllables and baby sounds…

Tell you what – the best thing in life is parenting! Exhausting one it is but the reward is beyond words!

Thetheeehhh

5 Mar

A few months ago there was “Kloklooo, Kloklooo”, and now there is “Thetheehhh, Thetheeehhh”.

What is “Thetheh”??

Well, it’s a creepy-looking cartoon called Thomas the Train, along with his train-friends who are all equally creepy.

I used to mock this cartoon character (as well as his friends) and I didn’t understand why children like it so much?

Then, one day not so long ago, about early February when he just turned 18 months old, Louis watched Thomas at Kiddy’s Cut while getting a haircut and all of a sudden he just started liking Thomas so much.

Since he still can’t say “Thomas”, he opts for a simpler version of his own: “THETHEEEEEEEEEEEHH”.

So, from now on, move over “Kloklo”, your reign is over, now everything is about “Thetheeehh”.

Thomas & Friends

Louis goes to school

Oui-Oui First School Day

My almost 17mo baby now goes to preschool!

Well, actually, not a preschool but more a nursery / playgroup.

We want him to speak French more often and meet fellow little friends his age, so we decided to take him to the city’s only French Nursery / Crèche.

A friend’s mother used to own this nursery but she retired and opened her own boulangerie – she gave me contact of the new owner.

After getting in touch with the owner, we decided to take Baby there so that we could see if he’d like it.

This morning, we took him there and Louis immediately liked the place. Unlike other preschools, they don’t really have a program – children between 12 to 36 months who enroll there just play and have fun all by learning. The owner of the place is very friendly and the place is so intimate, clean and comfortable.

Do you believe that Baby didn’t even cry neither did he have separation anxiety?? He just mingled and played along with the other kids and had fun! He liked playing there, trying all the new stuff and discovering the place. He only cried a little toward the end of the session because he was feeling sleepy.

So, he’ll come back next week and start enrolling in this playgroup soon.

My baby has grown soooo big! Preschool already! The next thing I know he’d be 17 and all teensy 🙂

New Year Festivities: Office Christmas Party & Gran Melia New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner

9 Jan

Since the Festive Season has just passed and we’re left to move on with our lives, I think 2012’s Festivities are worth remembering – thus this post 😉

The Office Christmas Party

For years, I dreamt of having one. This year, WE threw one!

You do happen to know that we have the coolest office in the world, don’t you?

Well, the office itself is nothing without its lively people. This is the best team I’ve ever had in years, and I do appreciate them all. They’re a happy bunch consisting of a strange mélange of people originating from different backgrounds and doing different things in the office, and even it’s not just one company – there are three! (And this week – the second week of January 2013, three become four, after that, four will become five in the next months – and hopefully by the end of the year 2013, this office will house nine to ten different companies altogether like branches rooting to the same tree)

The office has everything that makes you want to move here. And I truly hope everyone at the office will be happy, staying for a long time there!

So, the office Christmas Party was planned two weeks prior to the date. I wanted to invite everyone to a classy JW Marriott dinner, but J says “That’s so NOT special – you can do it any other time! This is Christmas. I want something special. So screw JWM and let’s cook the meals ourselves!”

So it happened as the boss’ wish is always our command.

And t’was extremely FUN! FUN with big F. I didn’t know I’d enjoy cooking with everyone that much. Everyone cooked something. We even made sangria – lots of fruity bits chopped in small cubes (Thai fragrant mangoes, lemons, blood Valencia oranges, kiwis, Black Autumn grapes and whatnots) soaked up in a punch bowl filled with a blend of Vodka, Red Wine and no-added-sugar OJ) – surprisingly the sangria was sooooooooooooooooo good even though, against all regulations, it was only soaked up at 3 PM in the afternoon to be enjoyed at 7 in the evening (usually it has to soak up overnight).

In short, we had these wonderful itsy bites of food to share: Stuffed Chicken, Swedish Meatballs with Parisian Champignon Mushrooms, Grilled Blackpepper Salmon Steaks, Chicken Cordon-Bleu, Baked Macaroni, Baked Bacon Garlic Bread, Fresh Garden Salads with French Vinaigrette Dressing, Tuna-Mayo with Asparagus & Cherry Tomatoes, looooooooooots of Canapés and my ever-famous No-Bake Strawberry Philadelphia Cheesecake.

We also had a lot of drinks and talks and laughs.

We exchanged gifts too – I got a very cute Bath & BodyWorks Pocket Bacteria Holder in Pink Paris!

New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner in Gran Meliá Hotel Jakarta

Another thing that was guh-reat was that we got to spend the New Year’s Eve in Gran Meliá Hotel Jakarta.

We. LOVE. This. Hotel!

The food is always excellent, the staff super-friendly and the service impeccable.

So, when we got the chance to spend NYE there, which was kind of last-minute plan to be honest, we just hopped in to the car and off we went!

The Gala Dinner was amazingly delicious. We had turkey, foie gras with mango jelly, foie gras with fig compote, Wagyu sirloin, Alaskan King Crab, almond bread with blackberry confit, Raclette fondue, and what else – a lot, actually. Let the photos speak for themselves.

Louis was also too cute for words. He loved being with us and enjoyed every bit of the moments as much as we did.

We’re definitely going to do some staycations in 2013!

PS: Their Sunday Brunch is also the best brunch in town 😉

Closing 2012 with a smile!

2 Jan

2012 was a good year!

2011 had been good, but 2012 was even better.

We have improvements in every level – from business and financials to life and family. I can’t even remember any OMFG moments in 2012 to be honest.

Louis

Louis is growing so fast – he started off 2012 as an almost 5-month old baby who was already active, and ends 2012 as a thriving almost 17-month old toddler who literally cannot stay put in one place for more than 2 seconds, who can now refuse what he doesn’t want and things he doesn’t like!

He now wants everything that we eat and follow us everywhere we go. He understands what we say very well and will answer yes or no with his head! Shaking his head for a no and grins if it’s a yes. He likes to be with us in the bed – the morning wake-up ritual is perhaps our most favorite moment of the day, us three cuddling in bed.

It’s crazy how much we both love him, J and I.

And we think perhaps next year he’ll be ready for a little brother or sister.

Having kids is just one of the greatest things that could ever happen to us.

Business

We opened new business ventures in 2012. There was never any downturn and we are very, very grateful for this. It’s like, all the opportunity doors that had once been closed during all the struggle years between 2006-2008, were opened at the same time for us by greatly kind, giving and loving invisible hands, who knew that we had worked so hard and so much in the past.

At the beginning of 2012, we almost sold our company to a particular, but deal was off due to several things. I was kind of pissed off about it, but I guess it was just not the right time. A few months later we met another entity who had more chemistry going on with us. We started off with one venture, then we got into the idea about expanding the cooperation, and the next thing we know is that we’re now constructing a digital media empire.

Travels

We traveled some in 2012 too – Tokyo, France, Bali and some other weekends around the city. Spent summer in the Southeast France with the extended family. Just us three.

Everything that happened in 2012 was not just good – they were great.

2013 Resolutions

As J has previously said, 2012 was great, but 2013 will be even better!

This year, I want to forgive – and be good to everyone. Because my blessings are so very uncountable now – everything I’ve ever wished for just pops up before my own eyes and comes true. So I know that Mr. Up There is looking out for us all.

And since universe has been so good to me, it reminds me of people I’ve fallen into disagreement with in the past. I decided to forgive them and focus myself more on being happy, less selfish, less full of myself and more patient on every single thing that happens or will happen.

Because I’ve been gifted this great life, while so many others don’t – I want to share my happiness with everyone by being kinder, friendlier, acting more mature, having a more positive attitude toward everything – actually, back to my old self before I became this career-and-company-obsessed woman. Be less workaholic, spend more time with my family and loved ones, because I remember that back in the days I was a very outgoing, open and cheerful person.

Man is weird. When it’s hot he wants it cool. When it’s cool he wants it hot. He always wants what he has not.

The past 3 – almost 4 – years my husband and I have been working so very hard we often forgot about ourselves. The essence of happiness. Because happiness is simple. Its own essence is about loving yourself, be grateful of what you have and not taking everything for granted.

I still remember – back in the days, we were dying to have what we have now. And now we are there, sometimes we don’t even enjoy everything life has to offer. We’ve always and always been stuck at work. This HAS to change. Because work has been shaping us and helping us getting where we are today, so now it’s time to re-balance: make a better time management, allocate more time to be with my husband, baby, mother, sister, brothers and friends, because life cannot wait. And for the past 3 years, we always said “Life can wait” – it isn’t true.

So, there goes my resolution for the upcoming year: in exchange of these countless blessings we have been showered with the past year, I’ve decided to become a better person: wife, mother, daughter, sister, boss and friend. That’s my 2013 resolution.

I know I’ve said I wanted to become a better person already, and I think my being 30 in 2012 has already improved much from my being the careless late-twenties who didn’t have compassion – I’d say there’s always room for improvement and we will never stop learning.

So, in 2013, my resolution is to become even a better person.

Welcoming 2013 with smile, I’d say, LIFE! Bring all the good things on!

Louis can walk

5 Nov

Louis can walk!!

Baby is 15 months old today. He started to learn to walk about two months ago, little by little, tiny steps here and there not more than 3-5 steps at a time.

But since Saturday, he’s been walking! For real! And yesterday, a day before his 15th moniversary he just walks. With arms spread wide like an aeroplane trying to land.

I am so happy. His papa is thrilled, too. Baby can now walk – disaster disaster! 😀 Mini tornado now roams free!

Image

And he could also ask for toys now. The other day he went with us to Mothercare, and saw a mini Lightning McQueen toy ride – he loved it so much he didn’t even want to get off it. So we just bought it for him – I know, I know! We shouldn’t just say yes to whatever he wants, but I think the Tiger Mom attitude must be saved until he’s at least 3.

And for the little baby who walks already, mama, papa and grandmas have already bought him cute little footwear…

Summer in France – Part 2: Paris

17 Oct

Back again!

We left Paris on a sunny, albeit a little bit windy, Tuesday morning. 2.5 more hours of TGV where we could finally sit down in a private compartment – empty save for us and the TGV controllers. Louis was behaving OK – apart of the TGV magazine whose pages he took pleasure in ripping and the chocolate yoghurt he “accidentally” poured everywhere, everything went fine.

Arriving in the Gare de Lyon, I honestly didn’t want to take any metro with all our luggage, so we just hitched a cab to our flat, which was located in the Beaubourg – Pompidou at the 3rd Arrondissement.

(Now, if you have never been in Paris before, Paris is divided into 20 areas called the “Arrondissements”. It goes from the middle of Paris, Isle Saint Louis, which is the 1st Arr, and it rolls outward like a snail house / shell. The best things happen in the middle, of course. I personally love the 3rd and 4th Arr best. The 1st and the 16th Arr is mostly the posh ones, while the 19th and the 20th are considered ghettos – even though this is going to change soon. We are buying an apartment in the 3rd – fingers crossed!!)

Things to do in Paris with a baby

This summer, actually, what we wanted to do was just relaxing. Afterall, it’s not like we were tourists. We just wanted to walk around, stroll around, go shopping, relax, dine & drink in nice restaurants and spend time playing in public places like parks – basically, things we don’t have in Jakarta.

Since our apartment was literally IN FRONT OF the Paris MoMA (Museum of Modern Arts), the Centre Georges Pompidou, it was near everything. Restaurants, bars, cafés, small boutiques, nice shops, and the Forum des Halles!!!! Hurrahhhh!!! Shopaholic hormones speaking up

So, we spent a week just like that: we didn’t even go visit any touristic spots – we just spent quality time, the three of us, going everywhere in ballads of Paris, and shopped a lot. The highstreet shops being mere minutes away on foot combined with a couple of shopaholics with their baby would not be a good combination for the resulting luggage going back home.

But, in case you’re going to Paris with the kids and wonder where we also went, here are the places you might consider, apart from the EuroDisney of course.

Along the Canals of Paris toward the Parc de la Villette

Paris is small!!! Compared to Jakarta, of course. Jakarta is a gigantic 661 km2, while Paris with its agglomeration only makes 100 km2-ish. It’s 1/6 the size of Jakarta, but it’s full of great things friendly for kids.

Image

Parc de la Villette is located at the end of Paris, at the northern tip of the city just under the city limits of the 19th and 20th Arr. From Pompidou/Beaubourg, you just have to go up north, along the Canals of Paris, about 6 kms of walk. We chose JUST THE PERFECT DAY for this stroll: the sun was shining bright, but there was some breezes which made things comfier.

Image

We put about an hour and a half because we took our time to take photos and stop everywhere. Louis was behaving very very nicely and he even fell asleep inside his stroller. (Bless Aprica Karoon, this stroller is just magically lightweight – we will soon buy the Karoon 2 to replace this old soldier so very used already)

It was NICE! We loved the canals – so quiet, under the shades of the trees, listening to the running water. We passed through the Canal de l’Ourcq where there are a nice park and restaurants, with two cinemas, one in each side of the river.

And Parc de la Villette itself! It’s huge. We arrived on its southern tip, near the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Paris, which is Europe’s biggest Science Museum. There’s always something cool for the kids here, so we promised ourselves to return when Louis is older.

Image

Image

The only downside of Parc de la Villette: sandwiches were expensive and the taste so-so – we should’ve prepared our picnic basket from home.

Next summer we’ll definitely be back at this park. Loved it.

More info here: Parc de la Villette – Paris

Metro: Stop at Corentin Cariou on Metro Line 7 or Porte de Pantin on Metro Line 5.

Entrance Fee: Parc de la Villette is free. The Science Museum I’m not sure, something like 8-10 € I guess.

Jardin des Plantes de Paris and its Ménagerie

This is Paris’ Botanical Garden, located at the 5th Arr near the Mosque of Paris (next to it).

Image

Image

It’s not so big, but it houses a lot of very, very beautiful flowers and plants and it has its own mini-zoo, the Ménagerie, as well as some museums (Museums of Natural History, divided into 4: The Evolution, The Mineralogy, The Paleontology and The Entomology Galleries).

Image

It also has a beautiful maze, atop a hill, a dreamy-looking rose garden with hundreds of varieties of roses, dahlia garden, tropical garden and a field of sunflowers.

Image

The Ménagerie itself isn’t so big as a zoo. But it was okay – it even had some pink-almost-red flamingos, reptiles, leopards and some orangutans (which are of Sumatran origins!).

Image

More info here: Jardin des Plantes de Paris

Metro: Stop at Austerlitz on Metro Line 5 or Censier Daubenton on Metro Line 7.

Entrance Fee: Jardin des Plantes is free for public, the Ménagerie 10 € per person (adult, I don’t remember how much would be for children, but it’s also free of charge for babies under 2).

Centre Pompidou for children & Fontaine Stravinsky

Image

Centre Pompidou has its own children gallery (Centre Pompidou Juniors) and from what I saw on their official website, it’s quite interesting – too bad Louis is still too young to explore it.

Image

But we had some fun time sitting near the Fontaine Stravinsky – a very whimsical fountain just some steps away from the Centre Pompidou. Louis liked to observe the fountain and all its sculptures.

Image

More info here: Centre Pompidou Junior Paris

Metro: Stop at Rambuteau on Metro Line 11 or RER A, B or D, stop at Châtelet-Les Halles.

Entrance Fee: Entering the museum itself is free, entering the galleries I’m not sure (we didn’t get in far). Stravinsky Fountain is of course free – it’s located outside, in a public space.

Shopping for Children’s Stuff in Paris

When we arrived in Paris this time, it was the final week of SUMMER SALE! OH. MY. GOODNESS. Everywhere we went, there were signs of “FINAL REDUCTIONS” on the display windows.

We bought quite a lot of things for Louis – clothes and some toys, mostly. The Summer Soldes will make everyone completely insane. Okaïdi Obaïbi, Nike, Adidas, what else? Oh, also Lacoste.

Except the Lacoste red polo shirt with long sleeves that we got at Lacoste Champs-Élysées where there were no reduction whatsoever, everything we bought never exceeded 15 €. The Nike ensembles at 15 and later on 10 €, swimshorts from Okaïdi Obaïbi for 3-5 € – it’s Jakarta prices slashed in 3, sometimes 4!

At Gap, H&M, Du Pareil au même – everything was on sale. We didn’t find anything for Louis here but we found some cute little things for families/friends’ kids at home.

If you’re going to Paris, I really, really advise you to go between end of June till end of July – where all the Summer Soldes happen.

There is no Mothercare though – I think that brand is native to the Great Britain – but anyway there are more brands to shop at in Paris.

AND! If you have a daughter, you would’ve gotten crazier than we were. Boys’ stuff are like 1/4 of the total stock – there are more stuff for girls – all beyond the highest cuteness level possible.

Now that I’m making all these posts, I start missing Paris badly…

Anyway, everything went smoothly! Louis was like an angel – always smiling, always nice, cried only a little and the rest of time he was happily sitting on his stroller and observing things around him. He was also behaving very nicely meal-wise – he liked baguette and soups and purees so no problem on that side.

During our stay in Paris, I also had to wash the clothes, clean up the apartment and do all domestic chores I usually never lay my hands on – all by taking care of Louis. Now, we also knew how hard it is to take care of a household and raise a kid without any help – I know this sounds so lame, but yes, we do need help from our family – in my case, mother and aunt – to raise Louis. It really does take a village to raise a kid.

This was the first time ever we went so far and so long just the three of us – and we succeeded! Two great weeks in France. Not a crisis – well perhaps just one or two (On the way back to Jakarta, Louis was unhappy and crying badly on the plane and even puked on a stewardess) – but that was all!

We’ll be back soon, Paris!

Milestones of the Golden-Haired Starlet Baby: 13 & 14 Months

14 Oct

Louis is 14 months old!

I always say this, but this is so true: time flies.

I still remember the day I held this golden-haired baby for the first time, moments after his birth: I was overwhelmed with love and joy that burst from every pore of my heart.

And now he’s a toddler already – and even though he’s no longer a baby, I still do call him “My Baby”. We still all call him “Bébé”.

Image

He now can do just a lot of things, and he’s become such a communicative little lad!

– He is learning to walk: two-three-four steps at a time and still a bit afraid of walking farther but he’s going to walk anytime now.

– He expresses his love for us more and more now. The other day, I came home after work finding him with his papa. I played and “talked” with him for half an hour, then I went to take my shower. Louis cried and called me over and over again, “Mamaaaaaaa Mamaaaaaa”, and when I replied “Yes Baby, just a moment!” – he stopped crying and called again: “Mamaaaaaaa!”

– He is a living tornado! 😀 He likes to make a mess of the house now. He takes everything out of its place, scatters them everywhere over everything, tears old newspapers and magazines and just about everything he could find.

– He likes Disney Junior and Cbeebies. We actually don’t let him watch TV that often – the only time he could watch TV is at the evening before sleeping lullabies by Mama, and just maximum half an hour.  He is also allowed to watch cartoons in the car, when strapped to his carseat – but that’s all.

– He dances to the cartoon jingles – it’s so funny! He’d dance and clap his tiny hands together.

– He’s crazy about his toys and most importantly his bouncy beach balls. My mother bought two beach balls for him at ELC, and he loves kicking and throwing his beach balls everywhere.

– He understands when we say “NO”. This is too funny too – because we’d say no, he’d stop, but then as soon as we have our heads turned somewhere else he’ll continue doing the thing we previously say no to.

– He understand what we say. When we get angry, he’d cry and show he’s sorry by asking us to hug him and then put his cute head under our chin.

– He likes his crib now! He’ll ask to be put in it to play with all his plush toys.

– He’s crazy about his papa. When papa is around, nobody else – and nothing else – matters.

We are becoming more and more protective, because again – people stalk Louis everywhere he goes. I understand he is a gorgeous kid (ahem) but it’s getting annoying because complete strangers would ask to take a photo with him.

And Louis himself is a very cheerful, very friendly baby. He’d say hello to ANYONE. Really anyone. Smile to every single person he meets.

Are we raising a future superstar?

Summer in France – Part 1: Jura

13 Oct

This long overdue post part 1 had to wait because, between starting new ventures already planned and running the companies and prospecting 2013 businesses, free time to blog is a luxury I nearly cannot afford.

SO! Without further ado, let’s roam two almost three months backward.

Bébé Louis – First Summer in France & Family Gathering

If last December Baby spent his first Christmas in snowy Jura, this summer he attended his first family gathering.

The extended family, consisting of the children and descendants of my husband’s paternal family, all gathered in their annual family feast, two days of eating, drinking and having a jolly good time together.

Since a few years ago, the feast usually takes place in the stable at the family farm. It’s spacious and Pépé (Louis’ grandpa) used to have his milk cows there. When he retired a few years back, he converted the stable into some sort of refectory with long tables and benches. In winter, it’s freezing there, but in summer it’s usually okay.

This was also the first time we flew far just the three of us. Challenging! But it was fun. Taking care of Baby 24/7 is exhausting but we adjusted fine with it and actually loved it very much. Louis is not a difficult child – he is the perfect little angel!

We took Turkish Airlines – which was OK service-wise, food was good and on the last flight from Istanbul to Paris we even had internet. The only thing we scorned was the fact that, TA will NOT go straight Jakarta-Istanbul. It HAD to go through Singapore first; and even though the stopover in Singapore only lasted about 1-2 hours, it was still annoying – we had to get off the plane, passed Sing’s immigration and went back inside the plane after it’s cleaned up and stocked with provisions. But the rest was OK. And as usual, families with babies get the priority, so there were we! Cutting up all lines like the VVIPs and getting the best seats. On all flights between Jakarta and Paris, the two seats in the row of four we were sitting in were unoccupied so Louis slept on them.

Everything went well until…Paris.

Like expected, the first day we arrived in France, the heat was on its peak and almost unbearable. Unlike Jakarta where it’s hot but it’s so polluted and humid that we don’t even see the sun, Paris – and even more, Jura – was veeeeeeery hot and dry.

Baby started being cranky due to fatigue and jetlag, and I was kind of pissed off because half of the toilets at Gare de Lyon were under renovation and I just couldn’t change his nappies and clothes until we were inside the TGV. Actually, traveling first-class inside the train proved of no use, because Baby was restless and made sure we knew about his being unhappy with the long travel. We had to retire into the outer space between the closed first-class compartments and we had to sing all the way to Jura to ease Louis up.

And the worst happened: when we got off the train in Jura, Baby absolutely refused to be in the baby carseat in Pépé’s car. He cried his eyes out for something like twenty minutes before falling asleep, and arriving in J’s family home, Baby continued crying and screaming…we were both too tired and went to bed super early. It was the longest 30-hour we’ve ever experienced.

(Next time, we’ll just land in Geneva. Honestly. And I am so not repeating this again, all family holidays from now on will always include my mother and aunt Ida. It’ll be best that way.)

Louis met his cousins again. All the cousins (minus one cousin who stayed back in their London home)! We had five days of blissful summer in Jura: super long days, good weather (except the weekend which was a bit soggy and chilly) – we benefited of all the beautiful things mother nature has to offer, things that we would never find in Jakarta.

And that’s one of the things I love most about the French countryside: nature.

Meadows, with its “rouleaux de foin” (I’m not sure if “hay roll” is the right translation for it; but it is roughly the dried hay neatly stacked and rolled up like…well, rolls), blue sky and birds singing.

Wild strawberries and forest raspberries tasting so sweet. Rich colors of summer flowers, and the insects flying around: bees, butterflies and ladybugs.

The smell of earth and woods and forest and fields of wild roots & grasses as high as your own height…Louis loved it all, just like we did.

And because I think pictures speak better than words…

We also ate great French foods – oh bliss!

I didn’t take a lot of pictures, but we practically ate the famous dishes Louis’ Mémé (that’s grandma in French) cooked, which was all super delicious.

Bref, it was a great summer in Jura. We’ll definitely come every year!

Milestones of the Golden-Haired Starlet Baby: Louis is 1 year old!

Baby Louis is officially not a baby anymore.

He turned 1 last Sunday, 5 August 2012.

How one year can make an enormous difference in your life, that I would not know before Louis was born.

One friend told me she didn’t want a child because children seem so messy and hard to handle and everything. Well, the choice is yours, but I can say that for me, all the wonderful things way outweigh the inconveniences 😉

What about the milestones?

0 month

Louis was born on Friday, 5 August 2012, 6:30 AM Jakarta time, in RSPI via caesarean section.

At birth, he weighed 3.55 kg for 50 cm, with dark hair and gray-green eyes.

His stump took off after about 9 days.

He was (and still is) the most beautiful baby in the world.

Started staying in his “daycare” with grandma, at one week old, when mama got back to work.

First outing to a mall in fX with mama and papa, a day before he turned one month old.

Had so many presents and has been blessed and loved since day 0.

1 month

Met his paternal grandparents for the first time.

He had his first holiday and therefore took his first flight at 47 days, to Bali with grandparents from both sides.

His hair started to lighten up to a soft honey color.

Started sucking his thumbs and all other four fingers.

2 months

He started smiling. Wide, toothless grins.

He started cooing and talking with gurgling noises.

He started laughing.

He started lifting his head.

Kicking hard already!

Hold things, grips still uncoordinated.

Started sleeping the entire night, waking up just for milk.

3 months

He started knowing and recognizing people.

He started laughing back when you laugh at him.

Started paying attention to moving images and sounds.

Started playing with rattle toys.

Asking for more and more attention 😀

4 months

Started liking to bite Sophie la Girafe, his chewing toy friend.

Went to France for the first time: papa’s family home in Jura and then to Paris, at 4 months and 12 days.

First Christmas!

Saw and played in the snow for the first time.

First-time ever started solid food: apple compote with Mémé.

Can already move 360 degrees and roll backward but cannot roll forward yet.

Started learning to sit.

5 months

He started rolling forward and backward easily.

Started switching easily from sleeping to sitting position.

Sip from a tiny sippy cup and short straws.

Talk back to you and talk more often in baby lingo.

Splashing water in his bathtub.

Getting angry when disliking or disagreeing with something.

Rejecting food he didn’t like.

Started getting bored easily.

Hold & grab things easily now.

Getting his hair blonder each day.

Eyes starting to change from gray-green to dark green with a shade of hazel.

6 months

He started to like people more easily.

Started playing peekaboo.

Started teething, and at 6 months and 19 days, ONE small tooth made its way out followed by other two!

First tooth is the middle tooth in his lower gum.

7 months

Second tooth and third tooth came out a week apart!

He started kissing us with soppy drooly wet kisses!

Screaming very loudly and cried when seeing a loved one leave the room.

Started crawling!

Babbling even louder with more syllables! Ba ba ba ra ra…

Started standing.

Started staring at other people’s foods.

Eyes now dark-moss green.

Dark blond hair with a shade of gold.

9.5 kg of love 😀

First Adidas and Lego Duplo!

8 months

He started waving his hands goodbye to people!

One upper tooth made its way out.

Started biting us.

Crawling very fast. Couldn’t leave him alone on the bed now.

Sitting upright back and forth from sleeping position very quickly and easily.

Pulled people’s hair and didn’t loosen the grip at all!

Throwing and banging objects have become a hobby of his!

Still loving to lick his toys, but eating hands becoming less and less.

Realized that Maurice, the dog, existed and lived – just one day 😀

First time sitting in a baby chair in Pizza Marzano Kemang!

Started bathing inside his inflatable ducky tub.

Grandma bought him Bright Starts Doodle Bug Activity Table.

9 months

Pulling a grimace when you asked “Muka jeleknya mana?? Where’s the ugly face??”

Showing more and more emotions 😀

Liked to be held while standing on his two tiny feet.

Hair is so longggggggggggggggggg now! Light-shaded golden hair.

Started having moods!

Started standing on his own with support of things around him.

Attracted by gadgets: iPhone, iPads, laptops.

Outgrew his first infant car seat.

10 months

He started moving both hands in the “Ainsi font font font les petites marionnettes” song.

More teeth coming up! Now there are 3 upper gum teeth and 2 lower gum teeth.

Standing on his own with support and could do some little steps if you hold his hands.

Outgrew all his baby sleepsuits.

Bought a new car seat from Mothercare that could be used until he’s 5.

Started clapping his hands to “Pok ame ame”.

Started being able to “dance” – moving his booties to the music!

Hair is SUPER DUPER long and even blonder.

Eyes turned into a color in between moss green and hazel.

11 months

There are now 4 upper teeth and 3 lower teeth, the 8th and 9th teeth started growing.

Starting to understand when we say “NON, BÉBÉ!” “No, Baby!” that the object is off limits. But then he will grin at you and wait until you have your head turned elsewhere before re-doing or re-trying what he was doing, again.

Second trip to France, the first trip ever just with mama and papa without grandma!

Attended the annual family gathering (from papa’s side) for the first time.

First time being invited to a birthday party: Dessey‘s BabyQ!

Started drinking UHT milk 😀

Started eating baguette!

Almost always holds his own bottle now when feeding!

Always dances to the music now.

LOVES HIMSELF. He adores seeing the video footages of himself we’ve been taking of him.

First haircut, 2 days prior to his first birthday.

12 months

First birthday party!

Switched successfully to UHT Milk!

Can almost “speak” – he now babbles distinctive clear words. Like “AVAAAA” it’s “Ça va” actually, meaning “What’s up” in French, the word I speak so often to him (“Ça va. bébé?”) and “EBEEE” –> that’s “Bébé” actually, alias himself.

Also says “PAPAPAPA” and “MAMAMAMA” very clearly now. He uses “PAPAPAPA” to call, obviously, his papa, but “MAMAMAMA” is used both to call mama and to protest when he disagrees with something.

“MIMIMI” means “I want milk!” (“Aaand faster than that!!!!!!!”)

And meaningless babbles like “ABUDAIII” and “ABEJAAAAAAAAHH” whose significance, to this day, is still mystery to us all.

Loves strawberries, dragonfruits, oranges and papayas, but refuses kiwi. Absolutely refuses kiwi.

He still loves (even more) watching his own short videoclips.

And he is smarter and more handsome each day 🙂

Happy birthday, baby. We love you. As simple as that. More and more everyday.
