It’s Darned Cold here in Florida, with an alert for potential snow

Must be Glow Bull Warming ;-)

I’ve freeze prepped the house and garden. Something I never thought I’d have to do. I’ve even added 2 “roll around oil filled heaters” since the central electric resistance heater can’t hold 72 F when outside temps drop below about 40 F. Dropping first to 71 F as it runs constantly, then down into the 60’s F when outside drops below about 32 F. The extra 3 kW seems to be enough to keep things steady, though it does take a little bit of finesse to get the three thermostats properly adjusted. (The roll arounds just have a dial with digits 0 to 10, or a tapered colored wedge, no temperatures)

So I learned that with the lights on, when one of the heaters kicks on, the lights dim just a little from the voltage drop. So I get the house to the target temp, then move the dial on the roll around heater just to where the light dims, then back it off to where the light goes full bright again. That way the house heater is dominant, but if temps drop below that target, the roll around heater will kick on.

Yeah, I know, I ought to just let the bulk of the house go cold and just keep the bedroom warm. But… Spouse goes to bed early and gets up way early, I stay up quite late. So either she wakes up to a cold house, OR I’d have to get up early to turn on all the added heat while she looks unhappy. Easier to just keep the temperature steady.

Europe & UK vs Russia & The BRICS+

Europe continues to look for ever more ways to damage their economies and scrape together all the taxes and debt it can to send more money & stuff to the Ukraine Bonfire & Money Laundry.

Russia is now advancing regularly and methodically. Ukraine having run out of men to send to the front, there’s no need for Russia to keep the trains running and the bridges intact; so they are now destroying them to cut off logistics support to the Ukraine Army.

The USA is now mostly “Outta There!” and decided to go play in Venezuela and Iran with a side eye at Cuba.

Ukraine is toast. Everyone knows it now. Why they (UK, EU & Ukraine) insist on killing off all the men in Ukraine makes no sense, but it’s what they are doing.

Watching The USA pile loads of gear around Iran

I suspect Trump was hoping the “show of force” would be enough, but it isn’t. That means US “action” against the regime in Iran. But he sure has been slow walking it.

I’m rather disappointed in the coverage from The Duran. Looks to me like they just read the British News which just supports the party line handed to them by the Iranian government, and it is wrong. While Tousi TV is showing film from the streets that show the “protests” are NOT over. Also, since he is an Iranian he can explain what is being said, and what is happening. The Duran is busy talking about how it is a Religion based government, decapitation strikes will not change anything and you would just get another Religious Leader with the same ideas. That is just flat out wrong. The people on the streets are calling out “Javid Shaw!” roughly long live the King..

They want this Religious Dictatorship gone, and a new Shaw.

It has shaken my faith in The Duran, since they clearly have not done there homework on Iran.

Tousi is correct here. Knock out the IRGC (Iranian religious police & army, not the Regular Iranian Army) and the people will do the rest.

A bit on Finance & Economics

This Friday “somebody” dumped a load on Gold and Silver markets and shoved prices down hard. ALMOST back to the moving average line… I think it was major traders looking to punch out the Stop Loss orders and load up on metal again. But I need to dig into it (tomorrow?) to be sure. I’m still WAAAAY ahead on the trade and did not stop out.

“Me” News

It’s just darned cold. Had to bag the avocado shrubs and set up the added heating. So mostly just puttering around the house now. Waiting for spring… or just some warm days again.

Fun Places

I’ve also gotten addicted to the Top Ten Memes of the week from WatchMAGA:

They have interesting “bite” to them, along with a tendency to highlight the news of the week in memes, so good as a social attitude pointer too. Plus they are “way fun” ;-)

New England Power FAFO?

Trying to out do the UK, EU & California on “Bad Decisions”?

Following Gang Green Carbon Fraud leads to very bad economics… and freezing in the cold.

I have not vetted this channel or the story, but it fits the established pattern of Leftist Government making bad decisions to cut off fossil fuels and shift to solar and wind, that fails catastrophically in cold weather or extreme heat.

The claim is that New England spent $Billions on offshore wind and an intertie to Quebec that both failed in extreme cold. The wind farm was making about 1% of power, the natural gas pipelines where shut off, and the Quebec Hydro was kept at home in Quebec AND the intertie was run “backwards” shipping electricity TO Quebec to “stabilize their grid”. So they had to get a Federal Emergency Wavier to burn oil in Diesel generators to stabilize their energy supply.

This is what happens when you design to political goals instead of designing to Engineering & Economic reality.

The presenter seems to be in Massachusetts / Taxachusetts… per his comments. Nice lefty State…

I’m leaning more toward a whole house Diesel generator ;-)

So Far Florida has not done anything stupid with power, being a nice conservative State. But better to build for the future before there’s a problem. I have enough portable gas generation (and fuel) for a weekend of power outage, and it will run 2 x portable AC units, or 2 x 1.5 kW portable “oil filled” heaters. But… It would be a lot more convenient to just have it all built in. For folks in the North East (or anywhere else with cold weather Green Power failure, or hot weather TOD pricing in California), it is likely an economical solution to “roll your own” power from onsite generation during seasonal peak excursions if prices warrant it.

It is certainly worth it if “load shedding” (rolling blackouts) becomes normal, as they did in California. His reference to “Diesel generators at data centers” implies a load shedding event.

Normally, backup Diesel generators are not designed to sync to the grid and backfeed. The general way this works is an alert is sent to major power consumers, like data centers, metal refiners, etc. that power is about to hit the wall and they need to swap over to local production OR just shut down. They fire up their backup generators and swap over to them, reducing grid load for the duration of the event.

Well, I could do that at home, too, IF I had my own Diesel Generator and a few hundred gallons of fuel.

So now that it isn’t Hurricane Season, I guess I’ve gotten that “round tuit” to have the Transfer Switch and whole house generator socket installed… while pricing options for a Diesel one with pad & installation.

My POV has The EU Making Exactly Wrong Decisions

The Question Is Not Are These Bad Decisions – Rather “Stupid or Evil?”

From the start of the Ukraine War, they have shoveled massive amounts of money and military equipment into the corrupt bonfire of a stupid war that can never be won by Ukraine. I’ve said so from about somewhere in the first year. Why? Pretty simple. Russia has a dramatically larger population, a massive arms industry, domestic access to almost anything they need, a long martial history, and are motivated by both a long history of attacks from the west requiring destruction, and by the existential threat posed by NATO in Ukraine.

The latest stupidity (or is someone making a lot of money off of LNG?) is all the crowing over banning ALL Russian natural gas and oil. Well, that’s going to lock the EU into at least a 33% energy cost excess just from the thermodynamic cost of compressing Natural Gas and cooling it to a liquid, but likely even worse (by a lot). Here, in the USA where they are sourcing all this LNG, when we have a cold winter Natural Gas prices spike (due to the stupidity of not using coal – which the EU is also doing). Now add all of the European demand and Natural Gas prices will be stratospheric. Then it still must be shipped across and ocean (with ship and crew costs), unloaded and re-gassified (more facilities and labor costs) and distributed to all the needing countries. That is going to be very expensive gas.

This compounds the “Net Zero” stupidity which bans nuclear and coal power (especially in Germany & England), where wind & solar get first claim on power sales (reducing income to all other plant and forcing them into low capital utilization and distorted costs basis for energy). This leaves gas as the peaking plant fuel when wind is low at night, which will be even more costly from LNG.

All of this makes Europe highly non-competitive economically and has already resulted in a lot of business collapse or exodus. ALL business & industry depends on the cost of energy as a foundation cost. For some high energy users it is a make or break item. A.I. Data Centers, for example, now measure their compute size in GigaWatts. Plural. One Data Center. As a person who managed the build out of a few data centers, I can assure you there is No Way I’d build a new big data center in the UK or EU (or California for that matter, and for the same reasons). Electricity costs way too high and rising, high labor costs, horrible regulatory environments, huge tax burden.

Same thing holds for any other big factory with a significant electric bill or fuel bill; from metals refining, to auto manufacture, and more. The flight of major corporations from Germany demonstrates that this is already in progress. This BTW erodes the tax base, pushing deficits higher, tax RATES higher (which due to being on the wrong side of the Laffer Curve creates lower tax collections), debt higher, and on into a spiral decent into depression.

Then, importing huge numbers of poorly educated low skill 3rd World folks who are put on very expensive Government Welfare programs, and largely have incompatible morals, religious beliefs, and create more crime and violence; well that just accelerates the social decay.

There’s more, like the India free trade deal and the attempt at one with Mercosur. A fast track to the destruction of farming in Europe. What will Europe produce to trade for the manufactures and ag products from a place with $5 / day being good wages?

I just don’t see how Europe recovers from this level of damaging decisions.

But to the question:

I can not see there being enough “stupid” in the world to be this consistently wrong and self destructive behaviour. Just how stupid must you be to get it about 100% wrong?

I could see it being the result of an indoctrination. Clearly that way for Gang Green Programs. But being on the “20th sanctions package” on Russia and seeing that the first 19 accomplished nothing of note? “This time for sure!?”… In a capitalist system, a trade happens only when both parties gain from it. Blocking that trade will damage BOTH parties. Europe is being damaged a lot by their self inflicted “sanctions”.

Which leaves malice – graft, corruption, power lust? The desire to be the biggest fish in a dirty tank? Is the election process so corrupt (like the USA Democrats) that only the corrupt and stupid rise to the top? Those willing to be bought off by major “donors” and those happy to make money out of their position.

I would rather think it was from stupidity than fraud and graft, but “stupid” ought to randomly get some things right. This looks more like Power Lust, Greed, and Corruption mixed with some indoctrination (Marxist & Gang Green). Then again, maybe there is still room for a lot of stupid inside that….

Short Term, Food & Skills. Long term Gold, Silver & Land

What my parents taught me about The Great Depression.

The video below contains a lot of the same things my parents taught me about surviving the great depression. THE major difference is that now our currency is NOT a “store of value” as it was then. Then it was made of precious metals. Gold, silver, and even the copper penny had inherent value. Now our currency (not money, as money has “store of value” where currency is just “medium of exchange”) has no inherent value. So saving “pretty pieces of paper” or worse, “bits in a digital wallet” is not saving anything of real inherent value.

Where I do not agree with the video is on the value of gold & silver. Yes, they are “less valuable” as barter goods in the middle of a currency colapse, BUT they store value long term for “the other side” of the event. For short term barter you want soap, beans & bullets, bandages and antiseptics, skills and food. But long term, bridging the collapse, land and precious metals carry value across time and space,

Still. this video has much of what my parents taught me about surviving the Great Depression.

Dad was on an Iowa Farm trading production of the land for survival. He was given one .22 rifle bullet and, as a teen age child, sent out to “get a rabbit” or other animal to eat. IF he came back with food, everyone ate well. IF he came back with the bullet, they ate from stores. IF he came back without the bullet, having shot and missed, he did not eat. Think about that. A single .22 round was worth food, or no food. Dad was a very good shot during W.W.II and I suspect this “training” was wide spread in the USA.

Mum impressed on me the meaning of food shortage. That a single tin of tuna and a couple of crackers might be 2 days of food. To know this and prepare for it. That a single silver dime could be a fortune, buy life. Dad was a Yank soldier and would send her silver dimes to save. He was pissed to find she had used them instead of saving them, but food now mattered more than value later.

This is why I have lots of jars, lots of bullets, canning skills, food preservation skills, tools & a garden (food forest in the process of becoming). And even a modest amount of precious metals. Because of what my parents (both of them) taught me about surviving the Great Depression across two different continents and half a world apart. One rural and one urban. both survivors.

So what have I got? A very large home lot. Enough to feed us if needed. A set of skills that include a current bit of work on improving “what I can grow”. Presently I can grow “enough”, working on “what I want”. More bullets than I can use, but a very nice trade item. Some gold and silver (mostly in “accounts” not in hand, something to fix if things start to go bad…). Lots of jars, canning supplies, and the skill to use them, along with a food drier and a few gallons of salt. Fuel in several cars (enough to get through a few weeks of infrastructure failures). and a small library of “how to” and wisdom books. Probably going to add a welder (I already have the skill to use it) for a barter skill / service in addition to canning.

The point of all this? Bad Times happen. Over time and space. Repeatedly. Prepare for them. Have skills and the assets that matter. Store things of long term inherent value. It will come some day, but even if not in your lifetime, teach your children. It will come as long as politicians are stupid, or greedy, which they always are. This time is NOT different.
