Getting back into DW.
cirque: (Default)

Hello!

I am so excited for this exchange. Thank you for writing for me, first and foremost. My ao3 username is [archiveofourown.org profile] cirque.

Here are some general things I like in a story:

women!, the relationships between women (complicated, simple, platonic, romantic etc etc etc), horror, sci-fi (IN SPACE!!!), genre-bending, genre fusion, anything weird, history, alternative history, domesticity, friendships, platonic love/soulmates, families, animals, witty banter, clever plots/characters, bonding, healthy relationships and unhealthy relationships and the contradiction between the two, detailed settings, mundane elements, gothic horror, gore, violence, body horror (any kind of horror!), people and the stories they tell, history, magic, magic realism (and fabulism!), elemental magic, secrets, time travel, reincarnation...

I am fine with any rating, any level of violence or gore. I am fine with any mish-mash of these prompts, and I love love love experimental storytelling so, uh, go wild.

DNW:

- first person
- explicit sex
- a/b/o (or really any kind of kink tbh)

Prompts:

I'm just gonna do what I wish my recipients would do when writing 'Dear Author' letters: ramble about prompts and vague story ideas. These are just here to inspire you; it's perfectly okay if you have an idea of your own and want to disregard what I've written. It's also okay if you want to mix up several prompts (did I mention I love fusion!!!).

Der Rattenfänger von Hameln | The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Fairy Tale) [source]

I requested 'any' character, and I truly mean 'any'.
The Pied Piper is one of my favourite stories. I am interested in the fantastical elements of it, the betwitching piper and his mysterious music. I always request this one because I just LOVE!! IT!! I love how the Pied Piper is something of a trickster figure, how he seems to mete out his own justice and how he does seem to legitimately have a system of rules, even if they're a bit skewed. Is he actually a magical being, or is he just a really dedicated pest control person? Has he done this to other towns? Is Hameln just the latest in a long line of towns? What does he do with all the children (assuming they're not dead)? Do they ever get to go home? What do the rats think to all this? (Assuming they are capable of forming an opinion - maybe they're magical rats).

I think this story is ripe for AUs - zombie AU (I love gore and horror!)? High fantasy AU? Modern AU where the rats are actually street kids? Yes please! Silent Hill-esque AU? Post-apocalyptic AU where the children's disappearance is an analogy for a generation lost to war/famine/etc?

Childe Rowland - Joseph Jacobs [source]

I've loved this story for a while, and I think I've requested it every year that I've participated in OUAF, but never received fic. I'm particularly interested in Burd Ellen - anything that gives her more agency is guaranteed to be a winner. It's a charmingly creepy tale, involving what is a thinly veiled representation of the underworld. It's got shades of Hades/Persephone. Merlin's words of wisdom are a warning more than they are advice, is he speaking from experience? What happens to Burd Ellen and Rowland's other brothers while they're dead? Maybe they come back as zombies (I love zombies!)? Maybe an AU where Burd Ellen rescues herself (yes please!). What is it like for her under the Elfking's spell? Is she able to influence the world around her? Does she even want to be rescued?

And the king of Elfland, what is his deal? He certainly has some strange magics. And he is apparently capable of raising the dead (hello, zombies!). Does he just lie in wait for young women to accidentally walk the wrong way around a church? How is that sustainable? Maybe he has other plans...? What is his origin story? Is he truly evil?

The Mad Merry Pranks of Robin Goodfellow (Broadside Ballad) [source]

I love this weird ballad with its wacky hijnks. The half-fey Robin, belonging to both worlds yet seemingly fitting in neither. His poor, poor mother. Oberon who really does her dirty, now that I think about it.

I love the archetypal figure of Robin Goodfellow/Puck through the ages, and how this ballad is basically his origin story.

I am mostly interested in the part of the story focusing on Robin's childhood. What is it like raising a half-fey child? I'm sure the poor mother suffered, but surely there were good times? How fustrating is it raising what is, essentially, a trickster figure? His pranks, jests, and japes must have a few stories worth in them. Did she ever wish his father would come and claim him and spirit him away, or perhaps she found Robin's jokes funny, up until the point in canon where she flatly reprimands him. She must have put up with quite a lot before eventually putting her foot down. The complaints of the townspeople must have weighed heavy on her. Did Robin have a reputation?

Also, sidenote, I am totally here for "changeling children"/the fey being a metaphor for autism. I have autism myself and it has always intrigued me, the stories of parents who feel their children have been spirited away and replaced with someone entirely different, seemingly overnight. I just feel its ripe for PLOT. Maybe Robin is only autistic, and he struggles with boundaries and recognising when the townspeople have had enough?

Rapunzel - Brothers Grimm [source]

I am interested in this story in two ways. Firstly: I am a huge fan of The Girl in the Tower trope (LINK), and I would love anything to do with Rapunzel's time in captivity. You seriously cannot go wrong with this one. I love the idea of Rapunzel languishing there, her hope waxing and waning, staring out at the wilderness. I want to know her hobbies and her worries, what it's like growing up as a prisoner. Do her parents ever visit? Is she the only occupant of the tower? Surely there must be servants? How did they come up with the system of Rapunzel lowering her hair? Is that truly the only way in or out of the tower? (Surely after living there for some time Rapunzel knew of any secret passages?) Did she sneak out in disguise?

Secondly: Rapunzel's time in the desert. Where was this desert? Was it maybe on Mars? Or somewhere more terrestrial? What was life like there for her? Why does she have magical tears? It seems like this could be a really interesting sci-fi tale, if that's your wheelhouse. What did Rapunzel do in the interim? Did she wait for her prince to rescue her, or did she perhaps act with more agency? What kind of life does one eek out in a desert? Did she recover from her trauma?

Alternatively, what is the witch's deal? What was it like raising Rapunzel, a child she apparently coveted? Did they get on? What was life like for them in the twelve years before she locked her in the tower? Were they happy (they must have had happy times)? What caused the switch? Did the witch pass on any of her magic? (Perhaps explaining Rapunzel's magical tears). Perhaps the witch intended to use Rapunzel as a successor/apprentice, but something went wrong?

My dream-prompt for this fandom is a Post-Apocalyptic AU where the tower in question is actually a skyscraper full of apartments/flats - and Rapunzel is the sole survivor. Just throwin' that out there...

cirque: (ao3)

Hello!

I am so excited for this exchange. Five figures is a lot of figures! Good luck.

My preferences are F/F, F/M, and M/M in that order.

Like I said, five figures is a lot of figures (for me anyway) and sometimes it helps to have a variety of ideas flying around.

Also, I am not a fan of explicit sex. I just find it cringy, and it makes me uncomfortable to read. I would just prefer it to be a background element, if that's okay? If in doubt, fade to black. That said, it won't ruin my enjoyment if you decide to include it, I will just likely skim those paragraphs.

Earth's Children - Jean M. Auel

Durc

Oh my sweet little halfling boy <3 I was so excited when Durc was introduced in the novel, because he represents so!!! much!!! possibility!!! So much potential! I was very sad that he wasn't included in the other novels, though I understand why Ayla didn't go back for him.

Image What is his life like after Ayla is exiled? Does he miss his mother, or do his memories fade? Does he still continue to talk, or does he only use the Clan's signs?
Image Does Durc learn that the Neanderthals will eventually become extinct a la Ayla's visions during the Ceremony?
Image What kind of niche does he carve out for himself, as he ages and as his 'deformaties' potentially exacerbate with age? As
Image Does he marry Ura afterall? Are they happy? Are there other half-Clan/half-Other children out there? (Presumably, it was quite common in history)?
Image What are his relationship like with other Clan members? As the son of both the leader and a pariah, it could go either way.
Image That said, they all seem quite fond of Durc, and it does take a village to raise a child.
Image Just Durc adventures! I am indifferent to Broud, and didn't actually request him, but obviously you would struggle to write a story without him in it so have at it. He's such an ass, but maybe he grows out of it? Or maybe he dies discretely, idk...
Image Adventures in worldbuilding! The novels give us so much insight into Cro-Magnon culture, and of course that's interesting, but I'm totally more into the Neanderthal culture! Their religious views are pretty well laid out, but what about their marriage ceremonies? Their interaction with the Others? Their crafting and cooking?
Image What is life like in pre-historic Ukraine/Russia? Cold, I'd imagine, but what do they fill their days with? What games, what stories, what art? The worldbuilding potential is endless here.
Image How does the magic work for those who are not Mog-ur? Tell me more about the totems.
Image What happens at the next Gathering? Tell me more about other Clans, about the merging of cultures that the Gathering necessitates.
Image Maybe the Clan has to go on a long journey, perhaps further south to avoid the cold, or maybe their hunting grounds are going thin. I would love to see Durc navigate the world at large.
Image AU idea: Ayla never leaves the Clan. Durc grows up with his mother, with language and animal husbandry and that connection to the Others. Maybe Ayla meets Jondalar later, maybe she doesn't.
Image Maybe she takes Durc with her on her travels. How would he cope, losing everything he's ever known?

A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin

Robb Stark/Rhaenys Targaryen

I am assuming this prompt means Rhaenys Targaryen daughter of Rhaegar and Elia, in some kind of AU where she survives. If not, whooops.
I'm going to assume she's the daughter of Rhaegar/Elia. Which means this story will be taking place in an AU. I'm cool with any details of the AU, whatever floats your boat. It could be rich for worldbuiling.

Image Did all the Targaryens survive, or just Rhaenys (or, maybe Aegon, as in canon)?
Image What happens with Robert's Rebellion? (I can't imagine a world in which Robert lives and allows Rhaenys to live, but maybe you can do a workaround, or just kill off Robert idk.......). Who sits the Iron Throne in this AU? (What happens to Lyanna, and Jon?) Lots of worldbuilding potential here, and I am excited to read about this AU world, however it turns out!
Image What is Rhaenys's life like? Where did she grow up? (As a Princess or as a pariah?) Was she sent to the Faith? The Silent Sisters maybe?
Image How do Rhaenys and Robb come to be betrothed, considering the animosity between their families? (Or is that precisely the reason for the marriage?) Does it poison their relationship? Are they in love anyway, like star-crossed lovers? Or perhaps they're not in love, maybe they're in an arranged marriage and everything is awkward and tense for a while, until one day it isn't?
Image Or maybe they're not engaged at all, but they fall in love anyway (it wouldn't be the first time a Targ and a Stark have Misbehaved). Maybe they're fighting against both families to try and work out a way for them to stay together. I imagine Ned would be So Tired™.
Image If they indeed get married, what is their life like in Winterfell? How does sunny Rhaenys cope, so far North? Do they have children?
Image I love all the other Starklings, and am equally interested to hear what becomes of them in this AU world. I would imagine Rhaenys and Arya would really get on.
Image Uh-oh, Others invasion time! What is Rhaenys's reaction to all that? Especially when we consider that Rhaegar viewed her as one of the three heads. He probably told her she was destined for great things. What even happens to the dragon eggs in this AU--are they still with Dany?
Image I would love a Second Long Night setting for this story, perhaps with Rhaenys as one of many heroes in the war.

Like Real People Do (Hozier - Song)

Group: Honey/Narrator (Like Real People Do)

This is so great! I was so stoked to see it had been nominated! I love this weird, weird song and it's quite dark implications. Bog bodies! Worms and bugs and dirt! Lovers doing unbelievable things for each other. Keeping secrets, invoking strange magics... Yesss!
Image First of all, who exactly are Honey and the Narrator? Genders, names, ages, backgrounds?
Image Why was Honey digging, what did Honey bury? (Or who...?)
Image What was the Narrator doing under the earth in the first place?
Image Where did they both come from?
Image In what ways are they different to real people?
Image (Side note: Maybe they're zombies. Idk. Or vampires. Or something else otherworldly).
Image This whole thing could work really well as some kind of grotesque surreal horror story, and I am totally down with that!

Biohazard - Resident Evil (gameverse)

Sherry Birkin, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine

Resident Evil is my main fandom. I love these three women almost equally (I have a huge soft spot for Jill), and this is an or request, meaning you don't need to include all three women, though I would of course be happy if you did.
Sherry Birkin
Image Oh sweet baby Sherry! I love this weird little mutant child so much. Tell me more about her childhood, both before and after Raccoon. Tell me what it's like to be a forgotten child, abandoned to a horrifying fate by your own mother. What is it like growing up a prisoner, an experiment?

Claire Redfield
Image What a badass. I love this queen. I am very interested in how exactly she got involved with TerraSave, what decisions she made to both remain in the Bioterror world and yet be out of the direct line? And how does she feel when that doesn't exactly work out?
Image How scarred was she from Raccoon? She was only nineteen years old, and she had to stay brave for Sherry. Maybe she breaks?

Jill Valentine
I!!! LOVE!!! JILL!!!

Image I love most of the other RE characters and would be thrilled to read about them too if you wanted to include them as BG characters. I don't ship anyone though, and would prefer to read a story without shippy elements.

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences.
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you.

hello

Hello and welcome to my journal. There won't be much here I'm afraid, I'm mostly here for exchanges. Pretty much all I will post is dear author letters, but thanks for stopping by!
