Where’d the name come from?
René Descartes was one of the first modern philosophers. He is most well-known for his conclusion known as the Cogito.
This warrants its own blog post, but the gist of the Cogito is that, even if you doubt everything conceivable, if you doubt the existence of the world around you, if you think you live in a matrix, there is one thing you cannot doubt – your own existence. In the very act of doubting your own existence, you show that you must exist. After all, in order to doubt yourself, there must be someone doing the doubting. Thus, even if you doubt yourself, you must exist. As Descartes says, “I think; therefore, I am.”
Of course, this by no means implies that the material world exists; it only proves that you yourself exist. What it does show is that you must exist in some form or another.
While coming up with names for this blog, I wanted a name that incorporates both philosophy and computer science. This is the horrible pun I came up with, combining the word “code” with the “cogito”. It also works out to “code-git-o”, referencing git, the popular source control program, but that was an unintended side effect.
No, I’m not sorry.
