Missing Grandpa Today

I found my grandpa, Frank's obituary online. Wanted to save it somewhere I could find again later so you get to read it too. I learned a lot about him.

Dean Sr. , Rev. Frank W. 80

Greensburg

The Rev. Frank W. Dean Sr., 80, a resident of Walnut Ridge Memory Care in Greensburg, and longtime resident of Dickerson Run, Latrobe and Connellsville, went home to be with his savior on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009. He was born Sept. 27, 1929, in Keisterville, a son of the late Charles W. Sr. and Mary Louise Turner Dean. On July 3, 1933, his father, Charles, was killed in a coal mining accident. The family resided in Keisterville until November 1941, when the company house that had been provided for them, free of rent and free coal provided for the survivors after Charles' death, was sold and the family moved to the Ohiopyle area. After his mother Mary's death in 1946, her three boys went to live with their grandparents, Frank and Bertha Turner. His grandfather, Frank Turner, was killed in an auto accident in December of 1946. His grandmother, Bertha, passed away in 1985. Frank was a graduate of Ohiopyle High School in 1947 and was valedictorian. He was employed by W.M. Fox and Fox's Inc. from 1948-1964. He operated a Western Auto Store in West Newton from 1964-1967. He did accounting work for Fox's Glass Co. from 1964-2004. From 1967 to retirement in 1994, Frank worked for Commercial National Bank in Latrobe. Frank served his country in the Army from 1951-1953 and participated in the Korean War. He was originally stationed at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., and went to Tokyo, Japan, prior to his discharge. Frank was involved with the Fay-West Youth for Christ organization from its origin in 1957 till 1982 and was involved when Youth for Christ united with the ministry of Penn Highlands Teens for Christ. He served as president of District 12 of the Fayette County Sunday School Association for many years, as well as being on the Fayette County Board. Frank was a longtime member of the Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. In January 2006, Frank celebrated a remarkable 50 years as pastor of Pleasant Valley Community Church in Bullskin Township. He began serving the church from its beginning in 1956. The church originally offered Sunday school only, and then a building was erected and morning worship services were added. He served as pastor, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent for many years. He lived his life dedicated in service to others. Frank is survived by the mother of his children, Jessie J. Dean; his children, Mary Louise Johnson, of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Frank W. Dean Jr., of Acme, James Edward Dean, of Connellsville, Thomas Leslie Dean, of Chicago, Ill., Charles William Dean, of McConnellsburg, and David Allen Dean, of California; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Valentine Dean, of Alexandria, Va.; several aunts, with whom he was raised; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Frank was predeceased by his grandparents; three brothers, Charles W. Dean Jr., David Lewis Dean and Edward Everett Dean; and a granddaughter, Aimee Elizabeth Dean. Family and friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville. Additional viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, the hour of a funeral service, in Pleasant Valley Community Church, Breakneck Road, Bullskin Township, with Pastor Nick Impavido and Pastor Bill Yoder co-officiating. A committal service and interment will follow in Normalville Cemetery. To sign the online guest registry, please visit www.brooksfuneralhomes.com.

Trying to eat better

I got some new Glad food containers at King Soopers recently. They were on clearance. They are salad bowls with a little cup that attaches to the lid to keep the dressing separate! I bought a bag of salad w/tomatoes on clearance for $1.79 which was enough to fill three salads. I got some fresh mozerella on clearance and added some torn up lunch meat (mesquite turkey) and I used balsamic vinaigrette as the dressing (that's all we had on hand). Today is day one. So far, so good.

Texas vacation

Things I'm thankful for from our Texas vacation:
We did not get caught in a hurricane.
The pending storm cooled Texas off a bit.
I'm thankful we do not live in that heat/humidity.
Our friends are doing so well, whether it be with their houses, their offspring, or their marriages.
That we have so many open arms to welcome us when we are in Texas.
That we are in a position to visit so many friends.

Failure

I have failed at my goal of writing a letter every week. Oh well, move on. (: we are going to be flying to CA for Hana's birthday and hopefully seeing as many people as we can. If you are reading this and I haven't invited you to our BBQ in the Sacramento/Lodi are, let me know! Only 9 more sleeps!

Challenge accepted

Thanks to one of my scrapbooking heroes: www.aliedwards.com, I've been thinking about a way to challenge myself creatively. I don't know if this would fall under "creative" but I've decided I want to write a letter to someone once a week this year. As in snail mail. That's 52 letters! Hand written. So if you're reading this and would like to hopefully receive a letter, email me. I have a bunch of people I already know I want to write to. I have some stamps to get me started. I hope I'll be able to get my hands on more as the year goes by.
