We seem to live with a curse whenever we live with my mom. Last time Cole and I both ended up in the ER shortly after he was born and we seem to be continuing the tradition this time around..... Just with different people.
So Korver was climbing up on a computer tower to get up on my mom's desk when he slipped and his leg caught the corner edge of the computer slicing his leg opened. He ended up with seven stitches in his leg, although I think it should have been more. I don't think the surgeon did a very good job. Oh well. Now he has a gruesome scar to show the rest of his life. Luckily, he's a boy. It was not fun holding this guy down while they numbed his leg. It's so hard to make your child suffer so much pain! He was pretty brave and by the end was extremely happy and was loving his new playdoh and popsicle.
A few weeks later I was cooking dinner and helping Cole with his homework and didn't notice that Shailee had snuck through the railing and climbed up on top of the piano. She got too close to the edge and fell off. I heard the fall and knew right away from her scream it was bad. I picked her up and asked if she was ok. She said no. She held her elbow and my gut told me it was broken. I have never broken a bone so didn't quite know what to look for so I gently felt her elbow and felt a piece slightly move. Ahhhh!! I knew Neil was too far away so I called my mom who rushed home and drove me with Shailee in my arms to the ER at IMC. Should have gone to Primary Childrens. We didn't. The ER took x-rays and wrapped her in a sling. They came back and said that they couldn't see a break but they were pretty sure it was broken because of the amount of swelling. We were told to call Primary Childrens in the morning.
So I call Primary Childrens in the morning and after convincing them that my daughter could not wait a week to come in they finally put me on hold and had a doctor look at the x-rays from IMC. I'm then told to come to the ER at Primary Childrens immediately and that she will need to undergo surgery that day. Once at Primary Childrens they show Neil and I the x-ray which shows a piece of Shailee's bone no where near where it's supposed to be. It was no where near anything, except for close to sticking out of her skin! How the heck did the doctors the night before miss that?!?! They gave Shailee an IV to hydrate her since she could not eat before the surgery and we waited in that room for around 6 hours.
I was starting to feel sick.
We then met with the surgeon who was incredibly awesome and the anesthesiologist who put Shailee out just enough so she wouldn't freak as they rolled her away from us. At that point, I broke down crying. I know I'm so dumb! It was just a broken arm. But watching my baby being rolled away unconscious was HARD! Neil and I went to the cafeteria, but I was feeling sick to my stomach so I didn't eat much. We headed back to the OR waiting room for 1.5 hrs. The surgery was only supposed to take an hour so I was getting a little nervous. The surgeon finally came in to talk to us and of course ......... that's when my food posining hit. I excused myself and ran........how embarrassing!! Not to mention the surgeon (who luckily was a girl) came back to the restroom to see if I was ok...... Oh just kill me now! Anyway, the surgery went well. It was hard to get everything positioned back to normal but she was able to do it with a couple of pins. Shailee did break her arm on her growth plate so we will be going in for x-rays regularly for the next year and half or so. Hopefully her arm will continue to grow normal.
The surgeon left and the nurses called us to let us know Shailee was waking up and we could see her now, but I knew I couldn't go. I was pretty sure I had food poisining from my lunch I ate at the cafeteria, but there was no way to know for sure and the last thing Shailee needed was to get sick so I knew I had to stay away. I knew I couldn't be there for her when she woke up, nor could I stay the night with her. It was SO HARD to walk away from the hospital without seeing her. Yes, I cried....again.
Shailee did amazing through everything and adjusted really well to her sling and cast. She couldn't have a cast on for a week because of the swelling and then she ended up going through 2 casts as the first cast got too loose. I think she actually really loved the attention..... and gifts. Whenever, someone would ask to see her arm she would proudly hold it up. Just like in this picture. She's also sitting on the blanket she got from Shriner's Hospital. Primary Childrens and Shriners are the best!
Here's what her x-ray looked like with the pins before the pins were trimmed.
And this picture is what the surgeon drew us. It shows the piece of bone that was out of place and where that piece really belonged.
So glad these two are ok and hopefully our visits to the ER are over!!!
