About me
Hello! I’m a musician from Bolton, based in Manchester. I’m interested in innovative and inclusive ways to create music, using new ideas and new technology.
I’m currently a PhD researcher at Salford University, researching creativity in group music-making funded by the NWCDTP.
I’m also a music facilitator, leading music and technology workshops in a range of settings. Often this is with young people, Disabled people, in the criminal justice system.&nbsp;
I studied BA music at the University of Oxford, and then MA Composition at the University of Manchester. I also have a PGCert in Higher Education teaching.If you want to hear what I’m up to more regularly, you can find me writing over at davidmcfarlane.substack.com.

01 I write musicI write music for concerts, film, and theatre productions.
Some of it’s for other people playing instruments, some of it’s just for speakers, and some of it’s a bit weirder.
I also produce other people’s music, and sometimes play in bands.There should be a video of some of it playing in the background of the website now. There’s no sound though, which sort of defeats the point doesn’t it. I would recommend having a listen to some of it for the full experience.

You can see the full list here, or if you just want the highlights, you can find those here.

03 I build things
I love experimenting with technology (especially music technology) and building new tools.
In the past, this has included some technology that converts sound into light, and a music box played by the rain.
I’ve also made a sequencer you can play with your Wordle results, and an interactive poetry exhibit that rewrites itself to the shape of your body.Sometimes I build things with groups – here’s an augmented reality storytelling project I worked on with a PRU.

05 I play music

I regularly perform in an around Manchester on electric guitar, mandolin, viola and voice, most recently as part of Oh Hippo:<img width="2048" height="2048" width_o="2048" height_o="2048" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/acd61607fd3dbd2cead43bd9e5d6ef5b4cbafb3ee7898ae8096c1f4ea23a50b3/Oh_Hippo_press_1.jpg" data-mid="217987855" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/acd61607fd3dbd2cead43bd9e5d6ef5b4cbafb3ee7898ae8096c1f4ea23a50b3/Oh_Hippo_press_1.jpg" />...in which we made indie pop bangers like this...

Drunk In Town by Oh Hippo

I also had a short but sweet stint in Pierre Flasse’s jazz ensemble:

And annually join Holly Reford Jones and Rebecca Grant to form the best Christmas party band you’ll ever see, Mary &amp; The Virgins.&nbsp;
	In the past I’ve been part of the Hallé Youth Choir, the Oxford University Ceilidh Band, Oxford-based funk and soul band Garfunkel, and a Flight of the Conchords tribute act, but thankfully I don’t think there’s any footage of tha last one online.

I also had the honour of playing guitar, mandolin and bouzouki on the lovely Marco Woolf’s EPs self: self by Marco Woolf

Teaching

I have experience teaching and leading music workshops in a wide range of settings.
A lot of this has been for&nbsp;TiPP (Theatre in Prisons and Probation), working with prisoners and young people within the Criminal Justice System.&nbsp;I’ve recently worked as a facilitator for Cartwheel Arts, Reclaim Project, RNCM, The Lowry Theatre, Z-Arts. I also co-lead&nbsp;Drake Music’s DMLab Northwest project with the lovely Billy Payne, which involves working with and coordinating a community of disabled and non-disabled creative technologists and musicians to develop technical solutions to access problems in musics.

I also worked for Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry for a year leading science workshops, so I can also tell you how a steam engine works if you like.If any of this sounds like something you’d be interested in, send me an email and we can have a chat. If you don’t have a budget or don’t think you can afford lessons, please don’t worry, send me an email anyway and I’ll try my best to work something out with you. And if you just have a question or something music-related you think I can help with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
