Preemptive Love Coalition

A quick post to make you all aware of something very amazing that is happening in Northern Iraq- an organization called the Preemptive Love Coalition. They have been using some very creative means to fund life-saving heart surgeries for Iraqi children. This has been such a blessing in the community.

I would say more, but I think it's best for you to go on the website to check everything out yourself. Watch the videos, read the stories, and be encouraged.

Also, if you're scratching your head about what to get your family for Christmas, they have an online store that sells unique Kurdish shoes, shirts, and a place to make donations on the behalf of a loved one. By doing your Christmas shopping there, you can bless this work, give a meaningful gift to a loved one, and help save the live of oneof the 3,000+ Iraqi kids in need of heart surgery.

You Don't Need Me, but You Want Me

December Snow

snow falls down
little flakes one by one
accumulating on the ground
and everywhere it falls

the moisture makes its way to seas
the water fills them most definitely

so it will be with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
It will be widespread and thick as Habakkuk foretold

A short poem for now so I can keep an audience. May there be more to follow. I was singing and meditating on a song taken from Habakkuk this morning and so those words are in my mind.

Hab. 1:5 "Look at the nations and watch—
and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.

Hab. 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD,
as the waters cover the sea.

Hab. 3:2 LORD, I have heard of your fame;
I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD.
Renew them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.

3 God came from Teman,
the Holy One from Mount Paran.
Selah [b]
His glory covered the heavens
and his praise filled the earth.

4 His splendor was like the sunrise;
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power was hidden.

5 Plague went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.

6 He stood, and shook the earth;
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled
and the age-old hills collapsed.
His ways are eternal.

7 I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian in anguish.

8 Were you angry with the rivers, O LORD ?
Was your wrath against the streams?
Did you rage against the sea
when you rode with your horses
and your victorious chariots?

9 You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.
Selah
You split the earth with rivers;

10 the mountains saw you and writhed.
Torrents of water swept by;
the deep roared
and lifted its waves on high.

11 Sun and moon stood still in the heavens
at the glint of your flying arrows,
at the lightning of your flashing spear.

12 In wrath you strode through the earth
and in anger you threshed the nations.

13 You came out to deliver your people,
to save your anointed one.
You crushed the leader of the land of wickedness,
you stripped him from head to foot.
Selah

14 With his own spear you pierced his head
when his warriors stormed out to scatter us,
gloating as though about to devour
the wretched who were in hiding.

15 You trampled the sea with your horses,
churning the great waters.

16 I heard and my heart pounded,
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
and my legs trembled.
Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.

17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,

18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights.
For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

We have to milk the Cows or Dominated by a Conviction

I just read these lines by Samuel Zwemer: "Once men are dominated by the conviction that a thing must be done, they will stop at nothing until it is accomplished."
This quote got me like snow down your neck as I read it this morning. That is because I had just journaled my frustrations of how this concept of seeing something that needs to be done and doing it plays out in my life. I find it easy to be all about my work as a carpenter or farmer, fo I can see the thing that must be done (especially milking the cows) and therefore I'll solve any problems, endure any physical sacrifice or risks necessary to accomplish my task. But then I wrote, "Why don't I always feel the urgency and come with a clear understanding [vision] of seeing the work of loving God and loving people accomplished?" I concluded part of it is the struggle of faith and the ability to see clearly. The ability to see both the task and the goal aimed for and rejoicing in view of the resulting accomplishment.
Since this is just to be a short note I'll conclude with something I read in 1 Peter this morning: "so that the tested genuineness of your faith- more precious that gold that perishes though it is tested by fire- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. ...Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minder, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1:7-9,13
May the coming praise, glory and honor to Jesus for his grace in saving repentant sinners dominate our convictions; and be real as the milk flowing from the cow. Let us stop at nothing until this prayer of the Psalmist in 72 is fulfilled, "Blessed be his glorious name forever, may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!"

Taking Aim in Ames

I pulled up this blogpost page to make a quick note about some things I read this morning, and then...
Well, It's kind of like when I was young, a few times my brother and I put a spool of thread into a drawer, and then kept pulling it out and taking it around and through various places in the living room, kitchen, and dining room until we had made a web. My mind makes connections. (as an example let me follow that tangent- this past week Lynn and I were visiting with my Aunt and Uncle and and Deb commented on how my cousin Nick and I are similar types of thinkers, always making those connections, and often ones that others don't see, and can be quite profound)
So, after five minutes, I came to the title for this post, recalling my previous post using the name of the city where I was located at.
Aim implies direction and focus. It seems that in life we must also take aim. What's your aim? Your goal, ambition, desire?
We can have a major aim for all of our life, as well as many directional and focus decisions throughout every moment.
For this moment, my lesser (or through) aim is to share with my broader network of family and friends a bite of Dan's digestions, to the greater (final) aim of you readers and I being most concerned with Allah and His Glory.
On that transition, I have a quote from Rick Brown, "The significance is this: one cannot change a person's concept of God merely by changing the name he uses for God. Any name that denotes God for someone will evoke that person's concept of God. What is required for reconceptualization is new information about God that will change the concept itself." This qoute was in an article Jeff Dodge mentioned to me this morning at the Acts study group as we were looking at Acts 17 in particular how Paul brought the message of Jesus to the Greek philosophers in the Areopagus.
Now, follow the thread from that article to the front page editorial of "Mission Frontiers" (can be accessed at http://www.missionfrontiers.org) where Ralph Winter was commmenting on, among other things a book by Alex and Brett Harris, Do Hard Things. Learn more about them and the book at www.therebelution.com
Then, as I was finishing up that reading and moving onto my task and to do's for the day, I considered sending a note to Mom and Dad and Matt and Ashley and others specifically interacting with teenagers; but really we all should have some awareness of all that's going on in the world, having a broad perspective and hearing many ideas and issues.
...And then take aim through our specific direction and focus. Blessings as you grow in your concept of the true Creator, Ruler, and Judge of the earth and all peoples, and He gives to you a direction and focus, even as your 'aim' becomes Him.

"For the LORD is our judge,
the LORD is our lawgiver,
the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us."
~Isaiah 33:22

New Hope, New Hope

Lynn is at the dentist here is New Hope, MN. Seems to be a great opportunity to make a post about another 'New Hope'. I had this scripture from 1 Peter come to mind: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time..."
Many thoughts, but here's the one I'll share for you to chew on: This month is Ramadan, the month in which it is said Mohammed received the first suras (chapters) of the quran. It is a time for Muslims to fast. From sunrise to sunset one is to not eat or drink, and to abstain from sexual activity and smoking. This is a time Muslims will think about the poor and needy, seek Allah's mercy, and practice islam (submission to God).
Would you join me in interceding for those who are fasting that God would powerfully draw them to truly find HOPE? The Hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ! Pray that the mercy of the Lord be known and bring a righteousness and submission to God that only comes through faith in Jesus.
There's a great resource to help you pray for Muslims around the world: www.30-days.net

Short note with a short Quote

Bear not a single care thyself
Once is too much for thee;
The Work is Mine and Mine alone.
Thy work - to rest in Me.
-J. Hudson Tayor

From the looks of how I've not posted since June, obviously I've been at least choosing other actvities to fill my time other than posting to this blog. I think however, I'll find that regular shorter updates are best.

As I realize the ease by which I can share my life and thoughts with you all here, I'll be inspired to share that which in my mind and living has transpired.

Meat for May 17th

I completed a post for May 17th below- it makes for the meat between the other two postings from that Saturday night.

Rains Came Down

And the Floods came up!
Indeed that is what has been happening lately. I've missed my 'regular' (it was two weeks in a row) posting that I did when I first joined this way to share- the technology of web logs.

Lynn and I moved from our first 'home' apartment into this house that we're staying in while my son in the fraternity and his wife are gone for internships this summer. This basement has avoided floods. Not so for many others, including the one I grew up in. Praise God for how clearly I get to learn and be reminded of where my hope and trust should be. I am, however, still thankful for plastic storage tubs that keep grandmothers' quilts dry and safe.

I came across the book Knowing God by J.I. Packer. More on that later.

Remember to build on the rock- Jesus. Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7 have a good start to the story.

Just the Right Words

I cannot decide what to write about in particular this evening that meets my standards of substance and brevity. I have created an expectation for myself to make these posts a three minute or less read that sticks in the readers' mind for three days or more. After agony, I found the appropriate piece of truth:

"The Teacher searched to find just he right words, and what he wrote was upright and true."
-Solomon, as recorded in Ecclesiates 12:10

My insight from this evening: I don't have one.
I don't have one, because I have one thousand.
One thousand thoughts I cannot write out,
for I desire for everything to be a masterpiece.
Maybe I need to realize I need not create masterpieces,
but be content with digestible sized pieces of the Master.

A Tough Critic- updated and posted

Here's a song I heard in between the post notes below from last month and now:

Josh Wilson - 3 Minute Song
From the album Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup

I tried to write a song, and keep it 3 minutes long
Get in, get out, nobody gets hurt
And I tried a thousand times to fit God between the lines
But I'm finding out that doesn't really work

Chorus:
I just don't have the words to say, 'cause words only get in my way
I must apologize, I have the hardest time
Finding something to define a God that I can't define
And even if I could, it would take way too long
If all I've got's a 3 minute song

I've got a hundred metaphors, and if I had a million more
I could never ever seem to sum this up
Besides, how can some melody communicate eternity?
It's like trying to fit the ocean in a cup

Chorus:

I'll never find the words to say 'cause words only get in the way
I would like to dumb this down to 3 chords, or maybe 4
But I've tried and I can't and I won't cause there will always be more
So I apologize, I can't seem to get it right

Right on. That's especially how I was feeling when I deleted a lot more than what's left below, and thought about even more.

The below was written last month during a bit of blogging constipation or diarrhea, I'm not sure which. It is shared in its now unedited form:

I cannot decide what to write about in particular this evening that meets my standards of substance and brevity. I have created an expectation for myself to make these posts a three minute or less read that sticks in the readers' mind for three days or more.

I deleted several lines about how I am inspired by the prophet Daniel, especially some observations of his life I saw in chapter 9. He was a man of the Scriptures and prayer, and Daniel's understanding of God, his reverence for God- these words of the Bible are such a blessing to me. [a disclaimer message: to understand God's message in the Bible requires the Spirit of God allowing such understanding. This is displayed in Daniel's life actually in this chapter 9, but also is described by Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 2, in the New Testament]

I also almost deleted an analogy using sweat and some parallels I saw with Jesus' life, but it has survived the.

The Gospel of John begins:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood[a] it.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.[b]
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent,[c] nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,[e][f]who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Footnotes:
a.John 1:5 Or darkness, and the darkness has not overcome
b.John 1:9 Or This was the true light that gives light to every man who comes into the world
c.John 1:13 Greek of bloods
d.John 1:14 Or the Only Begotten
e.John 1:18 Or the Only Begotten
f.John 1:18 Some manuscripts but the only (or only begotten) Son

I have spent much too long to compose this post. Much sweat, so let me finish. I am giving you sweat in this sense: If you have played basketball with me, you are fully aware of your encounter with my sweatiness. It is unmistakably noticeable; and for me it means I have life (in the sense that dead people don't sweat), and yet to some it is offensive.

In reality, this whole sweat analogy (remembering analogies aren't perfect, they are only aids to help us understand the realities) can be translated: God came to us in a tangible, unmistakably noticeable form- Jesus, "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." "In Him (Jesus) was life." As the story of Jesus continues as recorded in the gospel of John, we can read about those who took offense to Jesus.

For Refreshment

I have significant problems with this web log: this medium of communication is a garden hose at best. I have beyond oceans of stories and thoughts I would love share with all my friends and family, but alas, I cannot. Moments later I have the solution: I have realized I just need to change my concept of what it looks like for me to have a blog to share some of my thoughts with others. The key is that I share "some" of my thoughts. It should never be my intention to drown you all. Rather, I only need to give some refreshment. A sip and a splash from a garden hose will do just fine.

The Kiln of Global Communications

I've had clever thoughts and deeply insightful thoughts about what I might have for the content in this initial posting, but now I'm taking action. This 'blogging' comes at Lynn's encouragement for me to write down and share about what I think about, those topics I ruminate on during my days and nights.
This will be great practice for me to have a metaphorical "kiln" to fire the clay I otherwise mush and mold incessantly in my mind but never let it get away so it can be useful as a pot. While I've entitled this blog "DANIEL's DIGESTion," it really relates more to the function of the kiln. The meditative, ruminating processes relate to the handling of the clay, but the kiln reveals to all the world what the workings and shapings were- what it is that happened on the wheel in the private studio of the artist.

May friends and family find blessing, and many 'useful' insights I may share here.
When I can't be with you face to face, technological communication will bring the far near.
My regrets that only a small bit will ever get written and posted to this blog,
My mind could give you a forest fire and all you'll get here is a burning log.
Enjoy the light you do get from my 'ruminations' formed into words,
and be glad that's what you'll get instead of what ruminating and digesting puts in cowyards.

Leaving you with this thought:
The Purpose of the Daniel Digest is to compose words from ideas; so that we all can grow to see what it's really about- not merely blogging on the firing of a clay pot, but what metaphors like that can help us comprehend. I believe in an infinite Truth that we cannot fully understand. But from what we have experienced and been revealed to know- these are the things to show us glimpses of Him.
Yes, Truth is a Person. And He is the most Glorious, He is Jesus.
