Daniel Yong Chen-I Memorial Malaysia Chess Challenge

The Daniel Yong Chen-I Memorial Malaysia Chess Challenge concluded at KL Gateway Mall, drawing an impressive field of 137 participants from several countries for nine tension-filled rounds of Swiss-system action. This event was a highlight of the Malaysian Chess Festival, endorsed by MCF and expertly directed by IA Hamid Abd Hamid Bin Abd Majid and his team.

A Triumph for Malaysia: Leong Khai Shen Takes Gold

Malaysian talent Leong Khai Shen produced a stellar performance to clinch the championship with 8 points out of 9, outpacing a strong multinational field. His consistent play and ability to navigate crucial rounds set him apart as a deserving champion.

Philippines Shines: Olaybal, Paglinawan & More

Philippines proved its chess depth once again:

Christian Marcelo Olaybal claimed silver with 7.5 points, staying in the hunt till the very end.
Zeus Alexis Paglinawan also scored 7.5 points to secure bronze, closely following his compatriot.
The next Phl contingent included Adena, Lemmuel Jay and Ordizo, Ericka, each finishing on 7 points.

International Diversity in Top 10

Players from Indonesia, India, and Singapore fought fiercely, ensuring tight competition in the closing ranks of the top ten:

Nelson Lau (INA) and Narzabal Joemel (PHI) both finished on 7 points.
Satyam Prakash (IND) and Khoirullah Muhammad Azmi (INA) earned 6.5 points apiece.
The tenth spot was claimed by Romero Gladimir Chester (PHI), also on 6.5 points.

Another Historic Victory for Malaysia

This year's Open featured 80+ players across Asia and beyond, including top seeds like GM Nguyen Van Huy (Vietnam), IM Zou Chen (China), and a string of high-rated contenders from India, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, and Uzbekistan. The tournament, played over nine rounds, delivered a relentless display of fighting chess and dramatic upsets.

Kavin led going into the final round after holding GM Nguyen Van Huy to a tense draw, thus ensuring a tiebreak advantage over his chasers. Unbeaten through six wins and three draws, Kavin showcased mature nerves and tactical clarity, a rarity at his age.

DAT Chess Centre will be organizing the 2nd Pearl Point Chess Championship on 29 and 30 June 2024.
The Open event on Saturday, 29 June will be FIDE rated (We have applied for rating to MCF) and the Age Group event will be held on the 30 June.

Please register early so that your entry can be accepted. Last year many players had no chance to play because of space restrictions.

Ding Liren 17th World Champion

After three draws, Ding Liren won game 4 of the quick tiebreakers to become the 17th undisputed world chess champion! In the decisive game, Ian Nepomniachtchi appeared to have everything under control and even to have a lead at moments, but he underestimated his chances and let Ding acquire a hazardous passer. Ding maintained his composure and skillfully utilised his advantage.

47th Selangor Open (26/5 – 31/5)

The oldest chess tournament in the nation will be run by CAS from May 26 through May 31. Since its first iteration in 1974, the Selangor Open, which will be honouring its 47th edition this year, has had a very interesting history. An Open Section and a Challenger Section are the two categories.

The top 20 finishers in this 9-round Open Section with a time limit of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds from move 1. A total cash prize of RM 13,750 (the champion will receive RM 4,000) is prepared, in addition to another RM 3,000 in Special Prizes and 12 Medals for the best schools and IPT in Malaysia.

Any WIM/WGM/IM/GM and previous Selangor Open Champions who register in the Open section will receive free admission.

While, the Challenger Section with the same number of rounds and time control with RM 3,900/= cash prize for Top 10 winners, RM 1,000/= cash prize awaiting 9 top winners from FIDE Rating Ceiling categories and 3 best Ladies, and 12 Medals for Best Primary Schools in Malaysia.

This Challenger section is open to participant with FIDE Standard Elo below 1800 rating (May 2023 release) or no FIDE rating.

This event will be held at KL Gateway Mall. Any outstation participants who need accommodation at Cititel Hotel, please liaise with DAT Chess Centre (019-8480980) at special rate (One-night Superior room for 2 pax with breakfast @ RM220 nett).

CAS has appointed DAT Chess Centre as Event Manager for this event. DAT Chess Centre will be handling the Registration and Payment processes. All payments shall be paid into DAT Chess Centre Maybank account: 5145-9822-0396.

Rebate shall be given to players who register with payment BY 1st May 2023 (Monday) in OPEN section for both Individual and School-going Children (4 and above from the same school), and while School-going Children (4 and above from the same school) in the CHALLENGER section. Meanwhile, OKU participants who take part in OPEN Section is entitled to lowest bracket rate in Individual entrance fee of respective category based on the timeline of registration.
