At the time, because the disease was not recognized, there was no treatment. With a job, a sick wife and three children to look after, Kerns’ father sought to hire someone to help raise the family. He employed Elizabeth Watkins for the job.

Elon picks new health plan for employees

The Town of Elon will change its employee health plan as of March 1.

At a special meeting called Friday, the Board of Aldermen voted for an alternative plan under the town’s current carrier, WellPath,
Keeping the existing plan would have resulted in a 23 percent premium rate increase.

Cancer Resource Center lands at ARMC

The first Cancer Resource Center in North Carolina affiliated with the American Cancer Society will be housed on the campus of Alamance Regional Medical Center, hospital officials announced on Thursday.

The center, an information hub for the community, is a joint operation between the American Cancer Society’s Triad office and the Alamance Regional Cancer Center.

An open house was held on Wednesday and the center is now open.

Library tops Elon discussions

The Elon Board of Aldermen talked about fund raising for the town library project Tuesday.

Last week’s agenda meeting canceled because of snow.

In January, the board announced it would meet with the Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries to discuss fund-raising opportunities.
