My little prince...ss

So evidently my little boy has been feeling a little left out. Living in a predominantly female household has it's ups and downs, but I always thought we were pretty good about giving him the boy time that he needs. Today we found out differently.

G2 has informed us that he is a princess.

No amount of reasoning with him or pointing out that only girls are princesses has deterred him. He is what he is.

G1 (as only big sisters can) decided to let him explore the whole "girl" experience and this...
Image
...was the result.

Doesn't he make a pretty girl? Shall we see that in close up?

Image
Please note the charming bow on his head and the particularly pink shade of lipstick.

Considering that this...

Image

...is the usual dress up play for G2, you can see why I find this transformation and change of gender so amusing.

After I took the pictures (which G1 slyly tells me we can use for blackmail later) I told G2 that I missed my little boy. "That's OK Mom," he told me, "I'll be a boy again tomorrow."

Whew!

Fall 2008

Sorry about the lapse in blogging. Between the computer breaking down (with accompanying headaches) and the children sharing the tummy yucks--I haven't had a lot of time to blog.

And...we move on.

Fall, for some reason, is the busiest time of the year for us. We do most of our family outings in the Fall and spend a lot of time driving around admiring the landscape. D would love to take a train ride through the foliage one of these years, but we are waiting until the children can handle it.

This year was no different. I've compiled the pictures below--but, they bear explaining.

We go to the "Giant Corn Maze" near our home every year and really enjoy getting lost. The maze we go to has three separate mazes ranging from 1.5 miles to 3 miles with posts scattered throughout where you can get a "punch" on your card to show that you found it. Normally we only make it through two of them before one of the children decides they've had it. This year we made it through all three! Yeah! I tried to get a picture of us doing the victory dance, but my camera died as I was taking it. Just use your imagination. ;)

We also like to go to the local orchards during the Fall. On the weekends these orchards offer "Applefest" with hayrides, pumpkins, mazes, crafts, and lots of apples to pick. We went twice this year. The first time was very busy (as well as cold) and we didn't get to do as much as we normally do. We were rather disappointed until we noticed that one of the bigger orchards offered a Monday-Thursday "tour" for a lot less money than paying a la carte. So we came back the following week...paid less...and pretty much had the place to ourselves. We're going to have to remember that for next year. :D This orchard has a corn/hedge maze with a "castle" in the middle that we wandered through for awhile. The theme was "having a wild time" and so there were stuffed animals in cages throughout the maze. After conquering the maze we played on the pirate ship, rode the "train" and Moo got her pumpkin (we had chosen ours on the previous trip). Happy children all around.

We decided to let Moo decorate her own pumpkin this year. Please note that that explains the marker stained face. Please don't ask me why G1 has a red arrow on her forehead...I can't explain it. Yes...my children love to draw on themselves. **sigh**

This year for Halloween we decided on a "mythological" theme. G1 was Medusa (the green things in her hair are little snake heads), G2 was Cerberus (isn't he cute!), and the Moo was the Golden Fleece. Moo refused to pose for pictures so you don't get to see how adorable she was. Sorry. D took them out to trick or treat while I stayed home with Mom and made cheater donuts (they're fantastic!). Needless to say--the children made out like bandits. I culled their takings that night in an effort to cut down on the sugar overload. Uh huh. ;) On the following Sunday we made pumpkin donuts (real donuts this time) and had friends over. Pumpkin donuts were very tasty, if I do say so myself.

Good thing there is a slight break between Fall activities and Christmas--we'd be worn out! ;D

Tink...tink...tink...

Hello out there!

This is the first time we've been on in a week!

That's right...our former computer died a horrible death (it's mother...board died) and we are now picking up the pieces of our shattered lives.

Please...send e-mails and let me know where I can continue to send my inane forwards and jokes.

Thank you!

Interstate Fair

We went to the Interstate Fair a few weeks ago and had a great time. Below are some pictures from the event. If you put your cursor over the picture it will pause the picture and my comments show up...just FYI. It starts with the first picture of the three of them.

We started the day at 3:00 and ended up heading home around 9:00...we were exhausted but, happy. Even the Moo seemed to have a good time even though she was confined to her stroller for most of the time.

Favorite things included the trains (a lot of trains!) and the mutton busting. G2 says he'd like to try that mutton busting ("Mom, I wanna do! I wanna do!"), but I think he should wait just a bit longer. :-0 G1 (despite several admonitions to "leave it alone!") managed to work her loose tooth out. Right during dinner. This had a curious effect on the people seated around us. The Moo thought the cows were fun (figures) and D and I enjoyed the displays (being the old fogies that we are).

No need to mention that the preferred time for the children was spent riding the rides? LOL

School days...school days....

G1 started school last Tuesday and has been sooooooo happy. All of her friends from last year (minus one who moved) are in her class this year too. D likes to tease her about her teacher because her teacher's name is Mrs. Coffin, but Gabrielle says she's very nice and not a vampire at all. The school work started out harder right from the start (no warm ups in Mrs. C's class!), but she's up to the challenge.

This is the best picture I could get of her...she has started to not want to pose for the camera. Sigh. I had to take 8 pictures and practically threaten her with the tickle pine to get this smile. Of course the wind didn't help...see second picture. LOLImage
Image

Today was G2's first day of preschool. He couldn't sleep last night, he was so excited. He is going to the same preschool G1 went to and knows his teacher very well. Today, he tells me, he put stickers on his name and hurt his leg playing in the plastic car. A very satisfactory day.

How is this for a cute "first day of school" pose? He did it all by himself and I snapped it before he changed his mind. LOL
Image

And just for giggles...M's first Oreo. I think she approved.

And Moo turns 1!

Wednesday night we finally celebrated our caboose turning one! You'll probably notice that we had a bit of a cow theme going on. (yes, that brown and white frosting is to simulate a cow hide.) LOL! Note also the new word portrayed in several of the pictures..."ooooh!"

Yes...I'm in a silly mood tonight. ;)

Your Mind is Green

Image

Of all the mind types, yours has the most balance.

You are able to see all sides to most problems and are a good problem solver.

You need time to work out your thoughts, but you don't get stuck in bad thinking patterns.

You tend to spend a lot of time thinking about the future, philosophy, and relationships (both personal and intellectual).

Another one! LOL!

You Are a Banana

Image

You are mellow, easy going, and a total softie on the inside.

People find it really easy to get along with you. You suit most tastes.

And while you're very sweet, you're not boring or ordinary.

You have an attraction to the exotic, and you could show up anywhere... doing almost anything!

You are spirited, energetic, and a total kick to be around.

You're also quite funny. Your sense of humor is on the goofy side, and it fits you well.

LOL...really?!

You Are Basil

Image

You are quite popular and loved by most people.

You have a mild temperament, but your style is definitely distinctive.

You are sweet, attractive, and you often smell good.

PDA

We have hit a new chapter in our parenting book.

G1 has informed us that if we are going to be "mushy" in public, she would prefer to walk somewhere else. Specifically...anywhere but next to us.

Sigh.

I didn't expect it quite so soon.

Not that we're going to stop the mushiness...

August 13, 2008

These booties were made for walkin'...

...and that's just what she's doing!

Clever girl.

She's been taking a few steps here and there for a week or two, but she is now toddling everywhere and is darn proud of herself...and so are we. :)

Art on the Green

So this last week G1 was at Art Camp. At this camp you do visual art and performance art. Last year she did "Styles of the Masters" and "Juggling". This year she did "Styles of the Masters" (she liked it so much last year) and "Hip Hop Dance". At the end of the week the classes in performing art go to the local art fair and strut their stuff for the fair goers as part of the entertainment. Below is a recording of G1 doing her class dance. Sorry the quality is so awful...I only had my camera (not good...see previous entry) and it was an overcast day. However, you should be able to make her out--she's the tall blonde in the left corner. :)

July 26, 2008

Hummm hummm hummm...

So this morning I'm checking out my forums while M is happily exploring in the kitchen. All is quiet as everyone else is still asleep. I'm deeply immersed in reading a thread when I realize that there is a strange humming in the air. I stop and focus on the noise.

It is M...making a happy and contented humming.

Normally, I would just smile and go back to reading--but, today I noticed that she was sitting too still and had her back to me. Then I heard the slurping sound.

She turned and smiled at me...the dumdum clearly in her mouth.

That's right...the dumdum.

She had found one of her siblings suckers from the night before and had taken the wrapper off all by herself and was enjoying the fruits of her labor. She was eating it just like a big girl...holding the stick correctly...taking the candy in and out of her mouth...and humming happily.

Well...OK--most of us don't hum happily when we eat candy, but I bet we wish we could.

It was so cute, I just let her finish (and kept an eye on her until she was done).

Ah...the joys of sugar.

Super Hero

Image
G2 is my favorite super hero.

If D is tickling G1 and she calls for help...swish goes the cape and with a mighty "I'm coming, Sissy!" he runs off to save his sister from the evil Dr. TicklePine.

Although used cautiously, he is able to turn on his super charm powers to make M laugh when all others have failed. He succeeds every time...what magnetism!

Faster than a speeding tricycle, stronger than a Thomas the Tank Engine, able to leap from the couch over tall block buildings in a single bound...it's a bird, it's a plane--it's Super G!

What a guy.

New heading picture...

For some reason this picture just tickles my funny bone.

Maybe because not one person is looking at the camera...maybe it's because of the location...maybe it's because it's the only recent family picture I have and it's awful.

I don't know.

Enjoy while you can...D doesn't like it at all and it will soon be gone. LOL

Wooowww!!!

Last night we went to the little league game of our friend's son.

The game was fun to watch, but even more exciting was the incoming thunder storm.

As we cheered for the team we also kept a nervous eye on the lightning that was booming closer and closer. Many parents were facing the storm and talking excitedly about the spectacular bolts and forks that were streaking across the sky. Finally, the ump called the game and we all stood and watched for a few moments in awe.

That's when it happened. M's first word (other than mamma and dad).

"Woooooooooowwwww!!"

Wow, indeed!

Well...it was pretty impressive.

Our Family Lexicon

To promote better understanding...

Aliens: Mysterious persons who tend to move, lose, make dirty, or otherwise destroy items that are needed.

Big Bed: D and I's bed. Honored area of pow wows, reading, hide dark, snuggling, tickling, talking, dressing, dancing, jumping, and occasionally...sleeping. Acknowledged center of our home.

Canadian Bacon: Any kind of pork. Said in deference to Piglet, G1's favorite toy, as an assurance that it isn't any of her (yes, in G1's world Piglet is a girl) relatives that we are eating.

Carnubian Chow Beast: Used when watching in wonder as G1 manages fill her hollow leg or stuff her mouth past the full point. Lately has been used to describe M as well. Oddly enough...G2 is our picky eater.

Center of the Universe: Current baby.

"Ehhhh, Wrong, F!": Favorite phrase of one of D's professors. Now a cherished phrase used when one of the children is trying to pull a fast one.

"Exterminate!": We are probably the only family on this earth whose version of Old MacDonald includes Daleks, whales, and rocks.

Dance of the Fanciful Unicorn: As any Dexter's Lab aficionado can tell you...this is the dance of Dee Dee. This is also what we call any fanciful footwork/artwork/playing around that G1 produces and insists we watch. I think we may have to hold onto this one for M.

Froth: A mostly one sided conversation where the speaker gets verbally worked up to the point of a fine tizzy of articulation. Usually (but, not always) rearing it's head during discussions about politics, basketball, the Minnesota Vikings, history, and online games. Any guesses as to the main frother in our home?

Gabius the Delayer: A play on G1's name and D's favorite Roman general, Fabius the Delayer. Term first used as a proper noun to describe G1 and her penchant for spinning out bedtime routines, but has since taken on a life of it's own. Any kind of dillydallying done by the children is now honored with this term...in all it's forms. Gabian, gabiussing, to gabius, etc.

Hide Dark
: Time honored (it started with G1) game where D and one of the Gs hide under the covers on the big bed (see definition above) and the other G tickle attacks them. Occasionally Mom gets to be the tickle-meister.

Hoover
: What we call M. That child constantly finds stuff on the floor that even a microscope would have trouble seeing...and pops it into her mouth faster than I can say, "NOOOOOOOO!!!"

Localized Earthquakes: Phenomenon where only our house (and usually only one small spot in our house) is plagued by an earthquake. These earthquakes tend to only occur when D is around. Hmmmm.

Pagan: What D calls himself whenever he wants to get my goat. Get it? Goat?! Bwa ha ha haaaaa!

"Pines": Literally, D's index finger. Originally meant as a play on words when D was playing with G1...his "poke you pine" (say it fast) was such a hit (well, it produced a lot of "DAAAAAADDDDYYY!!") that it took on a life of it's own. We now have a whole family of "pines". The "tickle pine", the "kissing pine", the "wet willy pine", and the "steal your dessert pine" have all joined with the original...with new "pines" showing up as the need (or opportunity) arises.

Scenic Route: The slowest way home. Chosen by D for it's winding roads, verdant hills, abundant wildlife, and the ability to annoy the heck out of me. Also synonymous with, "we're lost".

Silly: Our family one-size-fits-all adjective.

Teefers: Teeth. What did you think it meant?!

"Ting": Said with a ring in your voice, a beatific look on your face, and your hands forming a halo above your head. I should say, said by D with a ring in his voice, a beatific look on his face, and his hands forming a halo above his head. He thinks we won't notice that he's being naughty if he does this...but, we've got his number.

Image

Wub: Love...but, not sentimental love. Love that teases, tickles, bear hugs escaping children, covers their faces in kisses as they scream in protest, etc.--but, always in good fun. "Pines" fall under this type of loving.

Flooding...

As you may have heard...we're having a bit of a flooding problem in the area this year. The dam is fully open and has been running water through at peak capacity for many days now. It's quite an impressive sight, so we decided to take the children to see.

Image
Image
They are used to seeing the dam closed or barely trickling and were very excited to see all the water...or as G2 said, "oooooh scary!"

ImageEven M seemed intrigued...

Image
And since we were there...we let the children let off a little steam of their own in the attached park.

G1 loved the merry-go-round. Just watching them made me sick. LOL

ImageG2 monopolized the slide...

Image
And both of them tried to conquer the monkey bars...

Image
They had a great time and even M was pretty cheerful (despite being in full teething mode).

Image
This is my favorite picture, though. I think it pretty much captures the whole spirit of our outing. ;)

Image
Oh yeah. We're a wild and crazy family. LOL

Non sequiturs...

Today I opened up the door to the bathroom and was overwhelmed by the smell of urine. It wasn't pleasant and I was dismayed because I have been very careful to clean up after G2 as he learns to aim.

I decided to keep an eye on him to see if perhaps he was finding a spot that was unknown to me. Imagine my surprise as he very carefully wiped and then stuck the tp into the wastebasket next to the toilet. Upon further investigation, I discovered a whole stash of similarly used tissues and the source of the smell.

When I asked G2 why he was sticking the tp into the wastebasket he replied, "That is where tissues go."

I guess the lesson where we waved good bye to the tp as it flushed didn't take. LOL

***************************************************************************************************

Sunday G1 was having a terrible time finding something to wear to church. She didn't like the dresses that were clean and (having discovered that she can wear some of my clothes) she was in my closet rummaging. I'm afraid I had to put my foot down and just say "no" when she came out looking very pleased with her choice.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that lacy red negligees are generally not acceptable wear for church...even when you wear a blouse underneath.

***************************************************************************************************
***************************************************************************************************

Yesterday G2 and M were playing very nicely together in the front room, so I escaped back to the bedroom to do some cleaning. Soon, I heard the telltales signs that all was not well and I came back to appraise the situation.

I got into the front room just in time to catch G2 stalking off with a look of disgust. When asked what was the problem...I was told, "I can't understand a word she says, Mom!"

Everyone's a critic.

May 2, 2008

She's mobile!

That's right, M is a crawling fool.

Up the hall, down the hall, into the kitchen, into rooms where we haven't closed the door...sigh.

She loves to explore and gone are my days of being able to get something done while she happily played on the floor of the front room.

I don't think I'm ready.

I'm definitely not ready for what comes next. LOL

Ahhhhh!!!

OK...I officially HATE my camera.

I saved up my money and got myself a brand new Sony CyberShot (7.2). I was sooooo excited to finally get a new camera.

And I hate it.

Evidently, I got the wrong CyberShot. I didn't realize there were different kinds of CyberShots--I figured a CyberShot is a CyberShot is a CyberShot. It isn't.

The kind I got is for stills. VERY STILL STILLS...with lots of light.

I have children.

Anyone see the problem here?

ANY kind of movement produces a blurry picture...I have nothing but blurry pictures. If it isn't bright sunshine, I get dark pictures. Thank goodness for Photoshop.

Between the camcorder breaking down and this ricken smacken camera I haven't had a good picture of the children since Christmas. It's very frustrating.

Someone please point me in the right direction (for under $200.00). And make sure you list the model...evidently I need help in that area. ;)

March 7, 2008

My future Egyptologist...

Every year the third graders at G1's school have a "wax museum" program where each child chooses a person of note from history to do a small presentation about. The child then dresses up as that person and strikes a pose. As the spectators approach and address the "wax figure" the child then animates and gives their spiel. It is a very fun project for all involved.

My child chose (no surprises here)...Hatshepsut.

I've included a link to Hatshepsut for all of you out there going "huh?" LOL

G1 adores everything to do with Egypt, so this was a natural for her. She even got to use her Halloween costume (which I made, thank you very much). She did a very good job and earned an "A+". Unfortunately, my camcorder chose this day to NOT WORK. (ricken smacken camcorder!) So here are the only pictures I was able to get. The young lady in the sheet is her best friend who was Mother Theresa. They weren't supposed to be next to each other, but that's where they kept ending up. **snicker**

Halloween picture for clarity...the serious expression is because she wanted to look authentic. Um, OK. ;)

And the Wax Museum pictures...

New Horizons....

You know, when you are potty training a child you become very familiar with the bathrooms of the various stores that you frequent as children are known to have very small bladders. While training G2, we didn't experience this as we stayed home for the majority of the training period.

However... Ever since G2 mastered the toilet, a whole new vista has opened for him.

Not only do we know and explore every bathroom that we come across...he has become a connoisseur.

First we must discover the secret hiding place of the bathroom in each new store. Then we check out every stall to make sure that all the toilets are the same. Then we pick the toilet that specifically fits our particular needs...on occasion each toilet is tested for acceptability.

After the raising of the lid, he assumes the stance of a ski jumper and does his job.

Then comes the seeking and implementing of the flush mechanism.
Self flushing toilets are not approved of.

We must then find the soap dispenser and giggle over the foam soap as opposed to liquid soap. Foam is preferred.

Last we examine the paper towels. This is a very involved step. Pull too hard on the cylindar paper towels and it becomes a bad magician's handkerchief trick...constantly coming out with no end in sight. Folded paper towels are frustratingly slow to grasp and small for our purpose. Air dryers are scary.

It takes a few minutes to decide, but finally we move on and all is well.

Except one last thing...we must now tell all and sundry that we have peed on the potty in a loud and happy voice.

I fear for the day that he discovers...

the boy's room.

G2

Last night as I was putting my son down for the night, I felt something hard and definitely out of place under the foam egg crate on his bed.

Upon further investigation I discovered that G2 had secreted three truffle style wrapped chocolates there.

Over his protestations I removed the chocolates and put on my best "stern" mommy face to let him know that hiding chocolates (that aren't his to begin with) in his bed was not acceptable.

But, as I was walking down the hall I could only think one thing...

"Ah...that's my boy!"
