Inspiration
Our inspiration is based on our frustrations over the proliferation of malicious comments and baseless arguments on the internet. In hearing these rhetorics, it is often easy to get carried away or caught in the storm of radical arguments. We wanted to create a platform that not only facilitates learning, but also engages people’s thoughts and opinion to be challenged and refuted.
What it does
Users can choose to debate, learn from, or teach other users about the given topics. This application will allow users to expand their knowledge on said topics, or clear up misunderstandings through discussing with others. The website is also linked to informative websites so that users can educate themselves before joining the chatroom.
How we built it
Some members were tasked with designing the web pages and creating elements using html and css. On the other hand, there were members who used java to link together the design pages with the functions that enables users to use our platform.
Challenges we ran into
Most of us came into the Hackathon with no knowledge of javascript or servers and limited knowledge of html. We therefore had to go through the process of teaching ourselves new languages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully learned new languages and used them effectively within the span of a day to implement a functional prototype.
What we learned
The hackathon was a self-teaching process where the team taught itself javascript, some html, and how to work with servers. We also happened to learn about the dangers of Omegle and the struggles of coming up with a punny name.
What's next for Alphamegle
Filters will be used to track the input of vulgarities and insults so that a user will be disconnected when such words are used. User ratings will also be incorporated; chatters will be prompted to give ratings at the end of every chat to evaluate the other user on their intellect and opinions on the topic discussed. User ratings will also depend on a user’s civility; ratings will drop linearly with the number of times a user is disconnected from a chat room due to malicious comments and use of vulgarities.
