Problem
Profile pictures are often the first means of users making impressions on each other. As such, these impressions may be negative if a user judges based on physical appearances. Thus, interactions may also be negative.
What it does
AnimalBook is a solution that abides by the Hack Harassment vision to make the online community a safer place by letting users of AnimalBook replace every profile picture on Facebook with pictures of cute animals instead. This gives the user the option of not judging people by their skin color.
How we built it
We used Javascript and Google Chrome Extension API to make a script that replaces profile pictures when a Facebook page loads. We used HTML5/CSS for the presentation.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of difficulty with debugging, learning Javascript, and understanding Facebook's dynamic loading of its web pages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project, AnimalBook, is our first fully developed project that we started and finished under the hackathon's time limit. We are proud to have it published on the Google Chrome Extension store, and fully dedicate an MLH free domain for the presentation of the product.
What we learned
We learned a lot about version control with Git, and how to avoid and resolve merge conflicts.
What's next for AnimalBook
Adding higher quality pictures, adding more animal categories, integration into other social media platforms ( Instagram, Twitter, etc. ), and deciding on an official logo.
