Inspiration

I was inspired by the thought of new moms coming into the world with no idea how to care for a baby or themselves. It can be overwhelming starting research and it can cause people to turn away from information before they even get there. Its important for new moms to know how their bodies will change, what they need to do to take care of themselves, and what to expect when their baby arrives. If Baby Base can ease even a fraction of new moms’ discomfort with diving into the world of pregnancy, then I will be happy with what I created.

What it does

Baby Base offers moms and families information to their most sought-after questions with connections to the resources used. I am the type of person who does days or weeks of research on things before I ever buy them or get into. Single moms, working moms, moms with other kids don’t have the time to compare answers to the same questions against multiple resources to make sure they are getting the right answer – I do have that time and I want to use it to help others.

How I built it

I built Baby Base entirely within Quick Base’s native technology.

Challenges I ran into

My largest challenge was that I wanted to do more than I had time for. Compiling all the information and combining the answers for the Questions table was hard too. Deciding what was important and what wasn’t – determining the right answers were challenges I faced because I am new to the motherhood environment and this wasn’t something I had knowledge of before starting this project.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud of the idea and what I was able to create in the time given. I think that the idea has a lot of potential and can help a lot of people. This started as an idea to win the Hackathon, but even if I win nothing – I am proud that I created something to help others in a world that doesn’t always offer it’s support.

What I learned

New mothers – moms who are pregnant have so much going on in and around them during the 9 month gestation period. I thought growing up that I knew what pregnancy was like, but there is so much more to than what people imagine. Women still die from childbirth at rates that shouldn’t be that high in developed nations. Hopefully having the information at their finger tips and an organizer designed to de-stress their life will make pregnancy easier for any mom who uses Baby Base.

What's next for Baby Base

My hope for Baby Base is to make it into a real, working application that people can download an use. Moms could share the app with their doctors to keep an eye on symptoms or share it with their friends so people can see the milestone pictures that they upload. If Baby Base were to turn into a real business, I would add expansions for things like Pets – where to get one, how to care for it, what’s common and what do you need to call a vet about. Another expansion would be for kids going off to college – how do you apply to college, where can you find scholarships, what you need to pack when you move into your first dorm. There is so much that Baby Base could become if given the opportunity.
