Inspiration
We were inspired by the recent rise of emergency room visits for eating disorder-related issues as well as anxiety and depression amongst teen girls. In 2017-2019, the hospitalization of teens who were hospitalized due to eating disorders averaged around 56. However, since the pandemic, this number has risen to 128 in a span of 12 months. These unprecedented times have left Gen-Z teens of all gender identities feeling more helpless and alone. We wanted to use tech to make recipes and information on food and nutrition more accessible so that we can use food the way it was meant to be used, to heal and grow.
What it does
This project prioritizes providing people with a more nuanced approach to nutrition and wellness rather than just calories. Berry gives teens a much-needed sense of autonomy and control in an ever-changing and uncertain world. With Berry, users can bookmark their favorite recipes that will then enable the app to make a grocery list. The app also utilizes brighter color schemes to uplift the user’s mood and give the users the ability to customize their own feed of articles and recipes, making it more unique to them. Berry seeks to enable teens to use tech in more intentional ways that add to their lives without distracting them from it.
How we built it
We used Figma. We also utilized plug-ins such as Blush, Anima, Figmotion, and Vectornator.
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us have much experience coding outside the classroom and neither of us ever used Figma so it was a lot of learning along the way and finding time to complete our goals for the project. It was difficult for us to put ideas together and condense the vague visions that each team member had. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to accomplish all we hoped for Berry to do.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of how much we learned in such a short time from this experience! We're also very proud of how well we were able to collaborate and communicate in the time frame that we had!
What we learned
It was certainly a lot of fun to learn about how an app can be designed and all the little details that make it user-friendly. We learned the basics of UX/UI design and prototyping. We also learned about tools we could use in the future like React and APIs.
What's next for Berry
Definitely code! As well as a better interface. We also hope to provide users with more affordable and accessible ingredients.
