Inspiration
~ 76.2% of the children who died were murdered within the first three hours of going missing. The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) needs to assess the case, examine documentation, and review with law enforcement partners for each case before any case becomes an active registration. Currently the government only reaches out to select organisations to help find missing children when they deem the case important. Locals can call Crime Stoppers to report suspicious activity for Amber alerts.
What it does
BirdView helps law enforcements and parents locate missing loved ones more efficiently and in a short period of time. It uses Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing to detect potential matches with reported cases.
How we built it
Designed the idea on Friday evening and discussed the use cases and main features. We built the front end app in with React, backend service with Node.js, express and MongoDB, AI service in python using AWS and slack api.
Challenges we ran into
- Computer Vision software limitation.
- The restrictions of accessing public data on social media platforms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We followed a micro-services approach which allowed us to work independently and reduce the number of conflicts.
- We contributed in solving a huge societal problem that affects a lot of people around us.
- We met each other and enjoyed working together in a fun and collaborative environment.
What we learned
- How to implement an end-to-end web app.
- One of our team members had the first experience working with a team to build a real world application.
What's next for BirdView
More data to find children faster: Surveillance cameras – e.g. traffic cameras, cameras that are already in place in public areas Gather data from more social media platforms Recognize missing children by the way that they walk or other bodily movements – useful for victims of abuse or burn victims that are not recognizable
Phone app (next slide), texting options Provide users with more ways to report missing children and suspicious events Improve our database Add computer-generated photos of missing persons if they have been missing for some time, to reflect what they would possibly look in the present
Scale this solution for other use cases Search for lost pets, missing adults, criminals, etc
