Inspiration

Our inspiration is drawn from Japanese pod-styled hotels, typically catering to business travellers. However, we draw particular inspiration from establishments like Hotel Shinjuku, which innovatively repurposes pod-style accommodations to provide shelter for the homeless. Recognizing the rise of anti-homeless architecture in the GTA, we aim to adapt this model to address the pressing needs of vulnerable individuals during the harsh winter months.

What it does

Our application is a booking app for those who need shelter. Trying to survive the brutal winter nights in the GTA can be detrimental. Capsula Inn offers a lifesaving shelter that incorporates diverse sections like Commons Lounge, Women's Only, LGBTQA+, and Youth areas. We also provide warmth, security, and hope by equipping members with a wide range of resources like

How we built it

We used Figma to design and prototype our final solution.

Challenges we ran into

As a two-man team, while we could split the responsibilities, we were still under a time constraint. This limited our ability to complete our ambitious ideas.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Capsula Inn has reached significant milestones. Despite our size, we've achieved remarkable progress, exceeding our expectations. Our in-depth research helped us immensely in our design decisions, and we are glad we could make something that could help those in need, especially as the winter days continue.

What we learned

We learned how to work with and make the most of what we have. From heavily managing and planning out our tasks and time to ensuring we took a step back to see the bigger picture while prioritizing features, it was a learning experience that helped us solidify our design process.

What's next for Capsula Inn

If possible, we would like to expand on our application to incorporate more resources and even place a larger focus on mental health as well. We also want to invest in ongoing research to understand homeless populations' needs better and identify innovative solutions.
