Inspiration

As dedicated collectors, we have always admired the seamless experience of tracking investments on Wealthsimple. We realized there was a gap in the market for trading card game (TCG) enthusiasts who wanted that same level of clarity and ease. We wanted to bring that intuitive, financial-grade tracking experience to the world of TCG collecting.

What it does

CardSimple is an investing and collecting platform designed specifically for TCGs. It allows users to track their card collections with the same seamless utility found in modern stock trading apps. It aggregates data to help collectors monitor the value of their investments and manage their portfolios efficiently.

How we built it

We utilized a robust modern tech stack to ensure high performance and scalability. The mobile interface was built with React Native to provide a native experience on iOS and Android. We used Next.js for the backend framework and Supabase to handle our database and authentication needs, creating a cohesive ecosystem designed specifically for mobile usage.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest technical hurdles involved structuring the project to scale effectively and accurately retrieving real-time data for the investment cards. Aggregating market information for specific cards and displaying it reliably required complex data handling and integration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of our resilience. Despite the complexities of fetching niche market data and structuring a finance-style app for collectibles, we pushed through to deliver a functional investment tool that provides genuine value to collectors.

What we learned

We learned that adaptability is just as important as technical skill. When facing structural issues or data retrieval roadblocks, we had to remain resilient and pivot our approach to overcome challenges and keep the project moving forward.

What's next for CardSimple

We are looking to expand the social and long-term viability of the platform. Our roadmap includes:

  • Community Leaderboards: To rank top collectors and foster friendly competition.
  • Digital Ownership Verification: implementing NFT-ready infrastructure to verify long-term ownership of digital assets.
