Inspiration
We wanted to create an application that would help any kinds of victims.
We were inspired to do this as there have been heartbreaking moments where we had to see our friends and family not get the justice they deserved. SA, criminal activities, and other problems in life are painful to endure.
What it does
When we were thinking about the theme: "Tech that solves any problem", our collective experiences—personal or educational—was on how so many students are victims from a range of horrible events (cyberbullying, assault, etc.). These horrible situations are often overlooked because of how underreported they are. It is extremely overwhelming to report a traumatic or troubling event, especially in a system that is often rigged against victims, requiring them to provide burdensome amounts of proof to seek the justice they are entitled to. Our app allows victims to track their location, or call the authorities in the event of a dangerous situation.
How we built it
Seeun- Since I was the graphic designer, I used Figma to design the UI of the entire app and website. I referenced a lot of my inspirations on UI designs, so I could quickly branch out and create a unique interface that was less cluttered than my old UI draft. I also designed the website and referenced famous websites we loved, such as RAINN.
Alan: I used Google Slides, Notion, and Google Docs to plan and execute our pitch. I was very inspired by my personal experiences as it relates to these situations and channeled that experience into my work. I worked with Seeun to coordinate her graphics on the Google Slides with the pitch.
Artur: I used HTML, CSS and a bit of JavaScript to create the website. I also utilized other resources to make our process go faster without having to code everything.
Christina- I used some Javascript and other resources with Artur to help code and create the website faster.
Challenges we ran into
Seeun- A major challenge was time crunch, but it was very relieving. I love designing UI, and I knew how to use my resources, plug-ins, and inspirations in Figma to speed up my workflow. I’m proud of the work I made, but I always personally feel as though it could be better.
Alan- The time was a big struggle, especially being in different time zones. However, I really enjoyed creating the slides and working on the concept behind our app. Creating the idea to be as efficient as possible in the 2-day challenge was a challenge.
Artur- The learning of new tools is always a challenge for me. It was challenging for me to learn JavaScript since I do not have any experience with it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Seeun- Definitely creating all the graphics and UI in such a short amount of time. I struggled to finish it, but with the clock ticking, I'm very proud of the fast work I could produce!
Artur- I am proud of working hard and consistently.
Alan- An app that is catered to a serious problem such as this one requires meticulous thought and effort. I am so proud of the work our team has been able to do to get this concept into fruition.
What we learned
Seeun- I learned how to use a lot more of Figma's aspects, but it was fun to experiment with it more! Choosing specific colors that emit a calm and less panicking vibe was essential.
Artur: I brushed up a lot on my CSS skills, it was definitely a language I struggled with, so this Hackathon helped me become more comfortable with the language. Overall, I'm glad this was a positive learning experience.
Alan: I loved narrating the slides and pitch as well as editing the scripts. I personally enjoyed brainstorming with our team to come up with the most versatile app as possible.
What's next for Scape
We had lots of fun thinking of features and mocking up an example UI of how it would look. However, time always wins.
We also would implement better graphics and more safety/organizational features for a more packed and powerful app, such as folders and a website version instead of just an app. Keyboards on a laptop or desktop are generally easier to type 40 pages on.
Another thing we wanted to implement was to contact nearby schools to introduce the app for students to have. With marketing and algorithm experience, we could also reach this app even further throughout social media. This app could help the youth, or even adults, finally receive the justice they need in any situation.
