Inspiration

Our team noticed that international students travel frequently by plane. As an international student myself, I find flights boring because there are so many people but there is no opportunity to talk to them, as I wouldn’t want to bother them. We want to incorporate the chat function in an airplane tablet, because we thought that it is important for international students to network. Our goal is to revolutionise flying experience by being able to share it with others.

What it does

The project offers passengers the ability to talk to other people in the same plane using the chat function in the tablet. To attract users and encourage them to send a message in an original way, users can send a message to a random person from the plane via a digital paper plane. We chose a digital paper plane because it is nostalgic and it feels personal for the user, as it brings them back to childhood memories, an old-school way of sending written messages in class. We believe that the user will be engaged and immersed in the activity by being curious. When someone accepts their paper plane, a conversation will begin where they will be able to see the person’s nickname and profile icon. We believe that creating a profile means that the experience will be more authentic and personal.

How we built it

This tablet interface was built using Figma. We started by selecting our target group, international students, because we believe they travel frequently and need more entertainment. Then we brainstormed ideas for the functions of our product. We thought that we should focus on the innovative function that we want to implement to improve current tablets. Then we added the basic functions needed for the experience and for accessibility. In the future we want to focus on the basic functions and add more options.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Some of us were new to using Figma and we are UXD beginners.
  2. We had difficulties figuring out the best layout for the menu, so that it is easy to use and accessible.
  3. Styling the interface to be visually appealing was challenging because we didn’t have enough time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Coming up with a useful, practical and original idea that would make the passenger’s flight experience more enjoyable and interesting.
  2. Doing a project in such a short period of time while overcoming challenges.
  3. Working in a team and sharing tasks, helping each other learn and grow as designers.
  4. Implementing accessibility and personalisation options.

What we learned

  1. How to use Figma efficiently and work as a team.
  2. How to prototype, make user flows and test the product.
  3. Deepen our understanding of the user and empathising with their problems.

What's next for ChatFly

For ChatFly we are looking to extend our design to fit the airline's image. We want our product to be compatible with existing tables, but we want to improve the experience by implementing the opportunity to talk and get to know other passengers from the plane. We hope this experience will make the flight feel like a journey, making the user interested and curious to see what happens next. Ultimately, our goal is to make passengers feel engaged and connected.
