Inspiration

We drew inspiration for this idea after learning about Kanokporn Tangsuan's family's legal battle with Disney. Unfortunately, Tangsuan passed away at a Disney park due to an allergic reaction, and his family decided to take legal action. However, since Tangsuan had a Disney+ membership, he could not take legal action as the terms and conditions for Disney+ state that users agree to waive their rights to any class-action lawsuit or jury trial.

What it does

ClearClause helps users decode the lengthy terms and conditions documents that are typically long and vague. This gives users more knowledge about what the company or product is doing and if it is potentially harmful or a threat to their cybersecurity.

How we built it

For the frontend of ClearClause, we used various HTML files to navigate between scenes collecting data and displaying the results in an order that was visually appealing to the users. We also used a CSS file to help format and design everything to give it a creative and secure look.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into various challenges but the biggest one on the front end was storing the data from the front end and moving it to the back end so the summary and rating could be created. Another issue we had was setting up all the necessary things such as git, GitHub, and importing libraries, this was an issue because it was our first hackathon for most of us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we made significant progress from the start of the hackathon from now. This was our first hackathon for most of us and web development was very new to us, so having to learn languages like JavaScript and HTML on the fly was difficult but finding a way to make it work and understand how it runs, is something we are proud of.

What we learned

Throughout this hackathon, we learned so much regarding web development and large-scale projects. As previously stated this was the first hackathon for most of our group members, so we were not used to large-scale projects where there were many different components involved. For instance, working to take data from the user and place it in the JSON file was a struggle at the beginning but then we eventually learned how to do it, by using an array to export to the JSON file which could be exported back to the HTML files or be used in the back end.

What's next for ClearClause

ClearClause in the future will become a mobile app that users can install in their preferred app store and we will work to make ClearClause a Chrome extension. We believe that a Chrome extension will be the most used of our products as it would summarize the terms and conditions when shown on the page, instead of having to go to a different website or application. We hope that with these additions users will feel more safe and will have even more knowledge to make better decisions regarding their digital safety.
