Inspiration
Food-poisoning outbreaks result in millions of pounds of food recall incidents in North America yearly. One memorable case was the romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak in 2019 where a nationwide recall of romaine lettuce was issued in the U.S. and Canada, impacting businesses and households that had to discard all their romaine lettuce - whether infected or not. This move was very wasteful, so we want to use technology to create a system of full traceability and transparency behind the grocery supply chain. If another outbreak were to happen, consumers would not have to wastefully throw away all their groceries due to uncertainties about a product’s past whereabouts. Instead, using our app they would know exactly where a particular item has been and whether it was in contact with the infection, preventing unnecessary food waste.
What it does
Cleo is a grocery traceability app that lets consumers track a grocery item to know where it originated and the path that it took to arrive in their city. Consumers can discover their food’s environmental sustainability and track its carbon footprint through an interactive map displaying an item’s journey. This transparency allows the consumer to see if their item had been in a region of a recent bacteria contamination outbreak. Cleo also includes a map component where consumers can find small grocery businesses and local farmers nearby. This sustainable way of grocery shopping helps ease supply chain issues and contributes to eco-friendly food production.

How we built it
- Figma for the UI design
- Python for backend
- Blockchain for tracking product data
- Google Cloud AutoML for picture recognition
Challenges we ran into
We took a long time to determine the flow of the app’s UI because there were originally too many ideas that we wanted to do.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating and implementing an app idea and our own solution from scratch!
