Inspiration

The inspiration for this app came from my own personal struggles as a first-generation college student. With my parents working in manual labor, I didn’t have role models to guide me on how to dress professionally, and I often felt anxious about making a bad impression in academic or career settings. That uncertainty motivated me to imagine a solution, an AI-powered app that not only helps people confidently choose outfits for business, school, or social occasions, but also encourages them to explore new styles they might never have considered. By combining technology with accessibility, the app empowers users who may not have had the resources, guidance, or exposure to professional attire to present themselves with confidence and creativity.

What it does

Cloud Closet allows users to upload images of clothing from their own closet. With AI, it generates outfit suggestions based on prompts, occasions, or style inspirations. Beyond just styling, it encourages users to explore new looks and understand how different pieces work together, making it both a digital stylist and a style-learning tool.

How we built it

Our tech stack includes Next.js, React.js, and TailwindCSS for the frontend and the Gin Golang Web Server Framework + AWS S3 for the backend. We also leveraged the Gemini Generative AI SDK to incorporate Gemini 2.5 as our LLM of choice as it provides generative text and image scanning in the same toolkit.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenges were handling image uploads and ensuring the AI returned responses in the correct format, so we could reliably parse both the clothing images and the generated text.

We’re proud of how accurate and fast our AI is, delivering outfit suggestions quickly and reliably.

What we learned

We learned a lot about integrating AI into practical, user-focused applications. This project pushed us to think about both the technical side (image handling, AI integration) and the user experience side (how to make fashion exploration fun and useful).

What's next for Cloud Closet

As stretch features for Cloud Closet, we had ideas to save outfits from Gemini that we liked, as well as the ability for it to suggest stores for us to purchase new clothing items.
