Inspiration

With the exponentially increasing cost of living in Vancouver, a greater portion of the population is vulnerable now more than ever. Numerous people don't have a roof over their heads, or a steady source of income to afford their meals. Not just this, a lot of new students and immigrants might want to know where they can avail of free resources until they settle in. Keeping these in mind, we wanted to create an app that lays out a map to users with locations that have the resources that they're looking for in a streamlined manner. And thus, CommunityCompass was born!

What it does

CommunityCompass displays a map to viewers with pinned locations that offer the resources they desire. It also allows users to register and log in, add a location that doesn't already exist, and update the availability of certain amenities in existing spots if required. This proliferates a sense of community amongst people, and ensures that community members can make informed decisions and know what to expect when going to a place!

How we built it

We used Node.js and Express.js for the backend, and stored our data in schemas in MongoDB. For the frontend, we used React.js.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to configure our data and appropriately retrieve it from and send it to the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Figuring out how to configure the data properly, taking the time out to go to workshops and network, and maintaining high spirits throughout!

What we learned

All of us came in with the goal of not just having a functional application, but also broadening our horizons in full-stack web development. Suffice it to say, we gained a lot of knowledge from this experience!

What's next for CommunityCompass
