Inspiration

We were motivated to create this organization in efforts to resolve this prominent issue at the University of Waterloo. It was observed that international students, which make up a large majority of Waterloo's enrollment, tended to stay together with people of the same culture and language. This caused divides and groups to form throughout the university which resulted in a lack of communication and intercultural understanding. Therefore, our team set out to find a way to motivate these students to interact and educate each other.

What it does

Access to the university verified website would allow students and alumni to create an account and log in. They are then able to fill out questionaries about their personality and general information. Then, we would take that information and connect opposite students from different cultures together and help them set up a meeting time. What's more is that we are looking to connect current students with alumni of their program such that it would pave way for a mentorship type of program. For example, a student can ask their mentor about their experiences in co-op or working abroad. The site is a safe place for students to connect and interact where issues such as harassment can be reported and tracked as students and alumni would need to be verified by the university.

How I built it

Our team used the WIX Editor feature to create the main template for the site. We also used the widgets within it to create the forum and submission buttons.

Challenges I ran into

One challenge we ran into was figuring out how to do the forums. However, after doing some research we realized we could use the included elements on Wix.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

One thing our team is proud of is the idea which addresses a major issue experienced by the University of Waterloo and even country wide as Canada embraces its cultura mosaic. Another element we are proud of is the design and applicability of the site as it is calming and colourful in design.

What I learned

Firstly, using Wix editor made things run a lot smoother for our team as we figured out how to do a lot of the design, forums and displaying information.

What's next for commYOUnity

We would like to expand to other schools and create a more interactive approach via the site.
