Inspiration

Clinical pharmacists get to contribute their skills and knowledge regularly in the hospital. Community pharmacists do not and are often regarded as drug dispensers. One way hospital pharmacists get to regularly contribute to patient outcomes is by bringing their drug expertise to patient rounds. Patient rounds are an interdisciplinary, structured discussion held usually by a hospital unit/floor to optimize patient care. Comrounds wanted to bring that interdisciplinary communication to community practice.

What it does

Comrounds is a listing platform for community patient rounds, seminars, learning activities and bulletins. Healthcare professionals would create an account, and search the first-half (3 characters) of their postal code to view local rounds. Healthcare professionals can also create a new round or event to share with their peers.

How we built it

Comrounds is built with React using a Firebase Realtime Database backend.

Challenges we ran into

React state problems and finding the origin of a strange bug rendering bug for 2 hours.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finishing a working prototype in general. This was my first hackathon using React. I normally opt for native mobile apps (ie. Swift) but I didn't think a mobile app prototype would work for a virtual demo. I had past experience building on existing React applications, but this time I found out a lot of nuisances associated with deployment.

What I learned

I learned doing a hackathon solo is significantly worse than having a team (p < 0.05). I originally was planning on joining a group but had new tenant issues on Friday. I was not sure what my weekend would look like because my scheduled move was delayed. Not wanting to be unprofessional and potentially abandoning a team over the weekend, I opted to go solo. This was my first solo hackathon and I found out that without anyone to celebrate (fixing bugs) or cry (more bugs) with you, the experience is diminished and feels like work. This is most likely my last solo hackathon.

What's next for Comrounds

Actual user accounts with hour tracking for continuing education. Role distinction and notifications for upcoming rounds.
