Project Story

✨ Inspiration

Whenever spring break or summer vacation comes around, Columbia students flock to group chats, desperate to find a group to share a ride with to the airport. Columbia group chats are littered with ultra-specific messages: “Is anyone taking a cab to X airport on Y date at Z time?”

Organized, formal communication hubs for students to synchronize commuting plans with other students are limited. With these concerns in mind, we arrived at our solution: CUSoon!, an app where Columbia students can browse, connect, and coordinate rideshare plans with other students.

🚙 What it does

CUSoon! is an app that allows Columbia students to sync commute plans with other students in an organized manner. It allows you to control your ride to match your preferences.

The main features of CUSoon! are browse, manage, connect and coordinate.

  • Browse: Search for rides that align with your needs, with sorts and filters that allow you to prioritize your results by price, time, or commute options.
  • Manage: The Managing tab allows you to make changes to groups that you made or joined. You can create new rideshares, accept/reject requests for new members to join your rideshare, make your groups private, and transfer ownership of your groups. For rides that you joined, you have the option to leave the group.
  • Connect and coordinate: Once you’ve found a matching group, you can message that person directly to meet each other and discuss the ride.

You can manage your account settings on the profile page and view your past groups.

🔨 How we built it

  • Identified context, target audience, and user pain points
  • Analysis of pain points enabled us to add and redesign features of the app
  • Developed and refined problem statement: How might we improve existing platforms for coordinating rideshare plans for Columbia students?
  • Developed sketches and wireframes using Procreate and flow using Figma
  • Developed hi-fi prototype in Figma

🛑 Challenges we ran into

  • Underestimating the scope of the project and different possibilities for commuters (i.e. ride ownership, requesting a ride, joining an existing ride, etc.)
  • Readjusting the flow of the app accordingly with additional pages to suit intuition
  • Striving for simplicity in design while retaining full functionality for users

🙌🏼 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Finding the flexibility to implement new components and pages into the design even at the last second, to ensure that the user has full functionality over their rides!
  • Developed a working prototype in under 24 hours (first time for some members!)
  • Attention to detail to even the smallest of buttons on Figma!

💡What we learned

  • Discovering how each little detail matters, and having to corroborate all of our ideas to flow together as best as possible.

💭 What's next for CUSoon!

  • Fully developing the working app!
  • Scale CUSoon to other college institutions!
