Inspiration

Our inspiration was the recent increase in flight cancelations. We'd seen the news covering the problem with airlines, and heard testimonies from passengers who felt like they were left without proper direction or guidance from their airline. After speaking with family, friends, and other students and mentors who've had bad experiences with cancelled flights, we decided that it seemed like a good problem and challenge to tackle.

What it does

Delayd offers immediate solutions to the "What do I do now" questions. It offers accommodations, the opportunity to view future flights and change your flight with the click of a button, and a map to explore the airport or surrounding area with filters. It puts the power of choice back in the hands of the passenger.

How we built it

Neither of us had similar experiences in the same programs, so we decided to utilize both of our strengths and provide both an artistic/"user-friendly-proof" concept, and a "proof-of-concept" version of the app. One version shows the potential of Delayd to connect with its users, and the other proves the technological concepts behind what we wanted to do.

Challenges we ran into

We had very different backgrounds and areas of expertise. While this worked in our favor at the end, it meant putting in a little extra work on both of our ends in order to provide the best possible presentation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For just meeting yesterday, we worked well together. We think our areas of expertise complemented each other, and worked to serve as the main thing to drive the design process forward. We were able to identify each others strengths and weaknesses, and work around what we needed to. At the end of the day, we designed and proved the concepts behind an app that we think could have a positive effect on how airlines accommodate their passengers.

What we learned

We both learned a lot about the design process for apps, the technology behind them, and what makes user-experience an art. We also learned a lot about how airports operate, and the detailed systems that go into them.

What's next for Delayd

Delayd has the potential to be built for real, now that we've proven the technology behind it. We will need to combine the artistic side of Delayd, with it's technical side to form one consecutive app. We'd also love to talk with experts in the field, to see if airlines would be interested in a solution like Delayd. We believe that it has the potential to be built into a company, sell directly to airlines, and improve the air travel experience for stranded passengers.
