Inspiration - Our inspiration was to encourage others to make change in the world in the easiest way possible! There are statistics that show that people are more likely to donate a round-up amount rather than a flat rate donation, hence the idea for Changify.
What it does - Changify is an android app that links to a users PayPal account and rounds up all of their purchases to the nearest dollar, donating that amount to a charity of their choice. In the app, a user can choose their charity, set their goal, as well as check the amount they've donated so far.
How I built it - Our app was built in Android Studio. The front end is XML, and the rest of the app is programmed in Java. Google Firebase is used to authenticate users and is being used as real-time database, and PayPal APIs are used to connect to a users' PayPal account and track their purchases.
Challenges I ran into - The biggest challenge was using the PayPal API, as we haven't had must experience with APIs. Furthermore, the time constraint as well as lack of sleep led to some unresolved bugs. :P
Accomplishments that I'm proud of - We are proud of this idea, as I think it would be utilized by many, and proud of the way the app looks. We are proud of what we have created in our first hackathon!
What I learned - I learned more about collaborating with others, as well as more about android development and APIs.
What's next for Changify - The next steps are to finalize the app, and move from using PayPal sandbox to PayPal live, so real users can use it! Then we plan on putting it on the google play store.
