Inspiration
I was inspired by SWE interns on tiktok who said that they applied to hundreds of internships, which would be a lot of applications. I wondered if they had somewhere where they put all of the internships in one list. This inspired me to create a space where I can compile a list of tech/CS summer programs for highschoolers.
What it does
The purpose of diversiUnity is to encourage highschoolers from minority groups to engage in tech. The website has the following features:
- General info about the lack of diversity in tech and why
- A map of 20+ in-person tech summer programs in North America & a list of online programs
- A way to connect with like-minded students and give/get advice
- An application tracker that lets users who have logged in keep track of which programs they have applied to
How we built it
I made a wireframe using Canva and used HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, Google maps, and replit to build the website.
Challenges we ran into
When I added the sign up / log in page to the application tracker feature, sometimes the sign up page would just not work and other times the information inputted into the log in page would show up as an application. It took a long time of sorting through my JS code to fix the error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of designing a website that is functional and looks good. I'm also happy that even though I didn't initially know how to execute some of my ideas, I kept trying.
What we learned
I learned more about JS, how to use local storage, and how to effectively use folders and file paths.
What's next for diversiUnity
I plan to add more opportunities/programs. I would also like to expand the capabilities of the application tracker to include due date, etc.
