Inspiration
We were inspired to create this project after we ordered from Taco Bell and realized how much easier eating out with friends would be if there was only a fast and easy way to automatically split a bill Among us simply by taking a picture of the receipt.
What it does
All you need to do is take a picture of a receipt, and our app will automatically scan it and list out all the items and prices it detects using OCR. Then, it will provide you with several options, such as automatically splitting the bill amongst multiple people, or manually assigning items to people and then automatically calculating the bill for each person. There are many customization options
How we built it
We first developed the OCR to scan an image and detect the text using the machine learning capabilities of Firebase. Next, we used Android studios to connect the UI and get it working for our app.
Challenges we ran into
We had some issues with the version control consistency throughout the softwares that we had been using. This made a significant portion of our time dedicated to fixing these issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to design the UI, successfully prompt the user to scan an image to capture a receipt, and create a backend for our project.
What we learned
We worked with various softwares such as Firebase and machine learning module for an OCR, which taught us how to scan an image.
What's next for DivideNConquer
Our next steps, after finishing a working prototype of our app, is to look into connecting commonly used payment apps such as Venmo or Zelle into our app. This would make it much easier to facilitate the transfer of funds between groups.
