Inspiration
We were inspired by an app called Finch, which keeps users aware of their mental health by taking care of a mobile bird.
What it does
In this app, we focus on helping users stay on track with their work and keep them motivated at the same time. Different from other task tracker apps, we have a cute mobile pet that we have to take care of. By finishing the tasks we are saving our pet from hunger and sicknesses. At the same time, we also stay on top of our work.
How we built it
We built it with a framework called Codename One. It provides Java template that works for both iOS and Android.
Challenges we ran into
It took us a long time to decide what to make. During the first few hours of researching, we realized our original idea would be unpractical to fulfill right now. After another hour of discussion, we finally decided to stick with this project. Another difficulty was getting familiar with the framework under pressure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to make our first app while learning to code in a new language is something we appreciate. We are also proud that we all got out of our comfort zone and tested our limits.
What we learned
One thing that we learned was how to build an app with Java. Most importantly, we learned to appreciate full-stack developers. We respect every engineer who puts their time to effort into making wonderful apps.
What's next for DO-DIE
We are aiming to add more features such as calendar and task categories. We also want to add more characters. There are still a lot of improvements we can make, but the final goal would be working to get an AI pet that can best help the users.
