Inspiration
It is not uncommon for people who take over-the-counter (OTC) medicine to not realize the complexity of their medicine and the interactions it may have with the drugs they are currently taking as well as the foods they eat.
What it does
To resolve the issue of simplifying the information of over-the-counter drugs for everyday citizens, our team developed an easy-to-use digital user interface that provides the user with general information about common over-the-counter drugs based on their medical information. One can describe this project as a digital pill box.
How we built it
To construct the user information database and drug information database, our team utilized Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges while developing the project was creating the structure of both our user database and drug database. The drug database had to hold enough information for each drug to educate the user, and it had to be well-organized for developer accessibility. Another challenge faced was deciding which resources to use to develop the front end and back end of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One accomplishment that we are proud of is developing a stable demo of the project while being heavily constrained on time. Another accomplishment that we are proud of is the design of the logo for DrugBuddy, which was designed by Ryan Lahlou.
What we learned
In terms of working together on this project, our team learned to communicate with each other more efficiently, informing each other of certain issues, breakthroughs, and new ideas. By creating the drug information database, we were able to learn how medical professionals organize information about over-the-counter medication.
What's next for Drug Buddy
In a possible future improvement of the DrugBuddy project, an expansion of the drug information database to contain more drugs can be done. With more time, another innovation can be to produce a more complex algorithmic process that can more accurately provide drug recommendations to the user based on the medical information that they choose to provide.
