About

The DSSLM (The DS Sleep Learning Module) is meant to be a very visual and interactive web-based tool that incorporates real case study encounters and allows students “to play a role” in the care of a virtual patient.

The online learning module enables medical students to cover the various complex and chronic sleep and associated medical problems that are faced by people with Down Syndrome.

This project has been spearheaded by the Down Syndrome Research Foundation and by the Department of Paediatrics (Dr. Sylvia Stockler, Mr. John Jacob, Dr. Osman Ipsiroglu) and Department of Genetics (Dr. Linlea Armstrong), supported by the UBC Teaching Learning Enhancement Funds and the TELUS Community Board Grant.

Website Landing

Description: A user-friendly landing website is being created as the public-facing portion of the tool. This is to introduce the two main target groups of the e-learning tool and to provide other useful information about the project. The landing page will then link to the Moodle LMS login page.

Technologies: Bootstrap, HTML, CSS, JS, LESS

Learning Management System

Description: Moodle has been identified as the LMS due to its FOSS nature, budget considerations, existing open-source development community, ability to utilise the existing development of a ‘whitelabel’ LMS, ability to scale the LMS when required, ability to integrate with other LMS and tools/technologies.

Moodle (acronym for modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment) allows for extending and tailoring learning environments using community sourced plugins. This is a dedicated learning management system so that upon installation there are existing features and installation set with e-learning in mind.

In development for Moodle there is the focus on meeting certain tech standards to help interoperability between Moodle and other online learning service providers. For example there is a plugin for LRI tools which are tools developed using the Learning Tools Interoperability standard.

Technologies: Open-source LMS with a number of APIs and other integration tools with developer/open-source community. Currently Moodle version 2.6. The latest is 2.9 but not all integration is up to date to the latest version so there may be compatibility issues.

Version: 2.6 (can be upgraded to 2.9 though some plugins may not have forwards compatibility)

Theme

Theme is Bootstrap which is also mobile-friendly

Features, Functionality, Etc

Moodle is an LMS (Learning Management System) which is “a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology (also called e-learning) education courses or training programs”. Therefore there are existing features for e-learning requirements that are already included within Moodle. If there are further additions beyond the initial installation (2.6) they are added in the next section “Internal Integrations / Plugins / Blocks / etc”.

Features document at https://docs.moodle.org/29/en/Features

Note about demo quizes

The demo quizzes can be uploaded via Moodle XML format - write up and import Moodle XML files directly into a course instead of creating quiz questions one by one.

Internal Integrations / Plugins / Blocks / etc

Please note these are addons in addition to the ones already existing on Moodle

{{This is about integration between Moodle and UBC Blackboard as the LRS via Tin Can API}}

BB is on SCORM Cloud which is accepted via the Tin Can API/Moodle plugin. This only handles the grading feature. Certain features are still in development.
