Inspiration
Inspiration for eatme came from a desire to make a fun, usable, project, and our teammate's dissatisfaction with the lengthy, uninteresting process that comes with signing up with dating apps. We wanted to create a solution that was intriguing to us, and therefore the idea for eatme, an app centered around food and pairings, was born.
What it does
eatme is an app that allows users to connect over food, which we believe is the most important aspect. In a tinder-style swiping feed, users can match and unmatch with users recommended by our algorithm. Users can chat about the foods they like and schedule dates with others.
How we built it
We build the app by first doing deep research. As we were all newer to the topic, we wanted to be sure we knew the scope of what we were approaching. Once we had the information we needed, we split up the tasks among ourselves, and we began to develop. We had to trust in our idea and that our capabilities as developers were enough to realize our vision for our app.
Challenges we ran into
The idea for eatme was hard to nail down. We wanted to make it an app for foodies, supporting local restaurants, but the specific logistics of what location data to gather, which food preferences to include, and how the matching algorithm should work were difficult to nail down. We had to research other dating apps to see how they approached the problem, in order to come up with eatme's solution.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For a team of 3 freshman CS majors with little to no experience in app development, we're proud and content with what we've accomplished here. The world of coding can seem scary, so this first app has made it feel a little more within our reach. We successfully created an app, based on an idea that we all like, and it provides the tools that we wanted it to provide, and that makes us proud.
What we learned
We learned a lot about the importance of work division and speed development. The use of tools like Claude Code to quickly build an app, as well as asking each of our members to build an aspect of the project and trusting them to do their work well, were important things that helped us succeed in this project.
What's next for eatme
As the hackathon concludes, our team remains committed to eatme. We think that there is value in continuing to develop the app, and that it has potential as a solution and answer to the modern dating app scene. So, we'll keep working on it, but maybe we won't be staying up all night to develop the app anymore.
